John Cabot By: Shivani Pradhan and Arjun Narayan
John Cabot or Giovanni Caboto was an Italian mariner. He was born in about 1450 and he died in 1498.  Born in  Genoa, Italy  Has many different names; historical records and letters call him Zoanne, Juan, or John Cabot   He grew up in Venice as a young boy  He has three sons named Ludovico, Sebastian, Sancto Background Information
Voyages On his 1st voyage, Cabot, his son, and 18 other crew members left Bristol on May 2,1497 on the Matthew. He landed on the Newfoundland coast where he claimed the land for England. When he returned to England from his first journey, he told stories of the marvellous fishing grounds called the Grand Banks. For his 2nd journey he sailed in 1498 with 5 ships and 300 men, he sailed southward as far as Chesapeake Bay Represented England
The diet was bad and they got diseases like scurvy.  Fear of mutiny towards the captain  Storms can wreck ships   Conditions were cramped on ships Injuries were feared because there wasn’t enough facilities to treat them Hardships Faced
Purpose Of Expedition Cabot was inspired by Christopher Columbus’s journey and wanted to make his own voyage to the Orient. John Cabot wanted to find the riches of Asia and bring it back to Europe. He was attempting to find a the northwest passage which was a new route to Asia  He wanted to be a famous explorer and have the glory of finding Asia. He thought that he could trade in Asia and get rich off the goods
Historical Contributions He brought very important charts and maps with him to England There is a Cabot strait.The Cabot Strait lies north of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. There is a Cabot Trail which is a loop road  in northern Cape Breton Island. He found the marvelous fishing grounds called the Grand Banks on his first journey.  The Grand Banks was so full of cod fish that it fed many people for centuries to come In Bristol, there was a bronze statue of John Cabot
Other Notable Occurrences He had a son named Sebastian Cabot who made  voyages to the area of what is now Atlantic Canada. When John Cabot landed at Cape Bonavista he named it “Buona Vista“ what means  Happy Sight. His ship the Matthew was made especially made for his journey The Matthew was built out of English oak, taken from the forestof dean and Wye Valley. The Mathew was named after his wife who was named Mattea.
