1. RACIAL MEMORY
: memories, ideas, behavior, and feelings that are inherited from ancestors.
It can be inherited through genetics, instinct, or posited memory.
-Racial memory relates to the collective unconscious, which is the subconscious
mind that we are unaware of.
- Racial memory plays a key role in self-actualization because it directs
the self through archetypes, dreams, intuitions, and drives the person.
-Racial Memory is passed through culture, religion, literature, etc.
- Racial Memory can be triggered by an event or object, and you can experience
Some kind of flashback that will revert back to behavior of your ancestors.
HISTORY
Carl Jung - came up with the theory of collective unconscious.
- There are different archetypes that display the different themes
where racial memory occurs in human life. Just like the archetypes of
the hero journey, there are similar patterns that occur in human life
that represent racial memory.
Such themes include: birth, death, initiation, marriage, union of opposites.
example) Man's predestined nature is to look for a woman counterpart. This
assumed behavior can be thought to be just a natural instinct, but it is an
inherited behavior from their ancestors.
-Related concepts arise from Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection
Survival of the fittest - The strong will survive and pass down those traits.
The qualities that enable the strong to survive are passed down inherently to
The next kin.
RELATION
Childhoods End - The Overlords that appear in the book resemble
traditional human folklore of demons.
-The Overlords have large wings, horned heads, tails, and hard black armor
shell.
This relates to our idea of the Devil. This inherited memory is passed through
culture and so the image of the devil is shared by the collective people,
regardless of when they grew up.
- It affects our culture by...
ex) Racism : racist beliefs are passed from generation to generation
ex) Religion : What your parents / ancestors believe tend to resemble
your beliefs.
ex) Everyday life / Tradition : basic instincts are made in relation to ancestors
without you even realizing it.
