This document discusses trends in technology and business. It notes that every day in America 1,100 new businesses are formed while 1,300 fail. It profiles many successful entrepreneurs who faced early failures and rejections, including Thomas Edison, FedEx founder Fred Smith, Starbucks founder Howard Schultz, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg. It shows graphs of high growth stocks like Apple, Netflix, and Priceline from 2005-2015. It discusses the power of compound growth and examples like buying Manhattan for $24 in 1626. It also profiles declines in the cost of computing, storage, and genome sequencing driven by trends like Moore's Law and Swanson's Effect.

The 13 Worst Mistakes Everyone Makes When Writing a News ReleaseJonathan Rick
“I’d love to read your news release.” Said no one ever.
Why is the news release — a staple of the PR industry — so unloved? Hint: It’s not the sin. It’s the sinner.
That is, there’s nothing wrong with the document per se. It’s the way we’re using it.
Why does no one share your releases through social media? Why do they generate so little pick-up by the press? Why do your own eyes glaze over them?
This is why.
I’ll buy you a beer if you aren’t making at least one of these 13 mistakes.

Great startups aren’t being founded like they were in the 1970s (Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, Genentech, Home Depot, EMC), 1980s (Cisco, Dell, Adobe, Qualcomm, Amgen, Gilead Sciences), and 1990s (Amazon, Google, Netflix, Salesforce.com, PayPal). All of these startups reached the top 100 for market capitalization, but Facebook is the only startup founded since 2000 which has entered the top 100. Tesla and Uber are often discussed as highly successful but they have many times higher cumulative losses than did Amazon at its time of peak losses and neither has had a profitable year despite being older than Amazon was when it achieved profits. Furthermore, few of the recent Unicorn IPOs have experienced shareprice increases greater than those of the Nasdaq (14 of 45), only 3 of these 14 have profits, and only six of them have a
market capitalization over $30 (Zoom), $20 (Square), and $10 billion (Twilio, DocuSign, Okta). America’s venture capital system isn’t working as well as it once did, and the coronavirus will make things worse before the VC system gets better.
A comprehensive look at the 2016 social media trends in business and how you can utilize them. A sneak peak into 2017 and how to prepare the marketplace using social media.

Social Media for Family Physician Advocacy and RecruitmentLeslie Bradshaw
This is a presentation that I gave to the Florida Academy of Family Physicians in Jacksonville, Florida on October 24, 2009. The content is a general introduction to social media theory, with an emphasis on how the elements of community, authenticity, family and intimacy found in social media directly correlate to family physicians. Additionally, FAFP has been engaging younger doctors through their Facebook page and are looking to take this to the next level.
The master class will focus on three key areas:
1. The art and science of performance-based social media - How creative and data tell a story that allows any brand to accelerate, iterate and improve performance.
2. How to stand out in a crowded crowd – As social continues to see the rise in both brands adopting the medium and the volume of content created. We will explore how any brand can compete and win regardless of the competition.
3. Attribution measurement – From discovery to conversion, we will discuss the rise of the consumer buying a product online after learning about it on social media, and how to make sure you are accurately capturing attribution.

Show Me the Stories: How to Measure Social Media, and Thus Sell It to Your C ...Jonathan Rick
Clients, colleagues, and managers are always asking for ROI reports. This is especially true when it comes to social media. We are in the midst of an unprecedented flood of innovation. The convergence of technological mega-trends in mobile, social networking, cloud computing, and big Data is something we at Menlo Ventures call The Right Now Economy. Previously impossible, The Right Now Economy centers around the idea that information can now be accessed, analyzed, and acted upon almost instantaneously - anytime and anywhere. This mega-trend is disrupting established industry sectors and players, creating opportunities for emerging growth companies to displace previously unassailable incumbents.
An updated presentation of the short head theory which is kind of the opposite of the long tail theory.
The update includes the short head of mobile apps and 2 new rules of the short head.
The short head in general -
The long tail theory from the early days of the internet (2000+) claimed that “our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of “hits” (mainstream products and markets) at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail.”
The short head proves otherwise - in the last several years we have moved towards an even smaller number of mega-hits!
The present is not selling less of more - it is selling much more of much less!
This is the short head - http://www.theshorthead.com/
The 10 rules of the short head / DLD Tel-Aviv 2014Dan Chen
How the Internet (combined with our basic human nature) turned our economy more and more into "the-winner-takes-it-all" economy instead of a long tail one – in music, film, t-shirts and mobile apps.
What are the reasons and mechanism and how can we avoid becoming long tail losers and become short head winners.
Now let's do some name dropping of what we will actually see in this presentation: Avatar, Italy, Steven Spielberg, Seinfeld, Steve Jobs, James Cameron, Friends, Netflix, Madonna, Busted Tees, Angry birds, Mark Zuckerberg, sneakers, Psy, 50 shades of Grey
