3. THE MAIN SQUERE
This is the principal urban space located at the
center of the city. It dates back to the 13th century,
and at roughly 40,000 m2 (430,000 ft2) is
the largest medieval town square in Europe.
4. THE WAWEL CASTLE
It was built at the
behest of Casimir III
the Great, who reigned
from 1333 to 1370, and
consists of a number of
structures situated
around the central
courtyard.
In the 14th century it
was rebuilt
by Jogalia and Jadwiga
of Poland. Their reign
saw the addition of the
tower called the Hen's
Foot and
the Danish Tower.
5. THE KRAKÓW BARBICAN
It is a historic gateway
leading into the Old Town
of Kraków, Poland. The
barbican is one of the few
remaining relics of the
complex network of
fortifications and
defensive barriers that
once encircled the royal
city of Kraków in
the south of Poland. It
currently serves as a
tourist attraction and
venue for a variety of
exhibitions.
6. ST. MARY’S BASILICA
It is a Brick
Gothic church re-built in
the 14th century
On every hour, a trumpet
signal is played from the
top of the taller of St.
Mary's two towers. The
plaintive tune breaks off
in mid-stream, to
commemorate the famous
13th century trumpeter,
who was shot in the
throat while sounding the
alarm before
the Mongol attack on the
city.
7. COLLEGIUM MAIUS
This is the Jagiellonian University's oldest building, dating back
to the 14th century.
The then 36-year-old first university in Poland, known at the time
as the Krakow Academy, moved into the building some time in
the 14th century after King Władysław II Jagiełło had purchased
it as an educational grant with funds bequeathed by his late
wife, Queen Jadwiga.
8. THE CHURCH OF SAINTS
PETER AND PAUL
It was built
between 1597–
1619 by Giovanni
Maria Bernardoni who
perfected the original
design of Józef
Britius. It is the
biggest of the
historic Churches of
Kraków in terms
of seating capacity.
Since 1842 it serves
the Catholic All
Saints parish.
