• The word environment has been derived
form the French word Environir which means
“to surround”.
• Sum total conditions which surround man at
a given point of space and time.
• It includes both biotic and abiotic substances.

• The word taken from Latin word Pollutionem
means defilement from soil land and water
• Defined as the unfavourable alteration of our
surroundings wholly or largely as a byproduct of
man’s actions.
• Pollutants may be solids,liquids as well as gases.
Solids-aerosols,lead,mercury, asbestos. Liquid-
ammonia,urea,nitrates,chloride,
