2. About Mass Dolphin Deaths
Over the past few years,
there have been several
mass deaths of dolphins
around the world. No one is
quite sure of what is causing
these deaths and they
continue to happen in the
Gulf of Mexico, off the coast
of Peru, and in many other
parts of the world as well.
3. Reasons Behind Dolphin Deaths
Some possible reasons behind these
mass deaths are problems caused by
humans such as dolphins getting
caught in fishing gear, vessel strikes,
underwater explosions, excessive
noise, and depletion of prey species.
Although experts say that there is
no evidence of a worldwide,
multispecies crash, there are still
extremely large amounts of
dolphins mysteriously dying all over
the world.
4. Reports of Dolphin Death
Phenomena
The Chinese river dolphin, or Baiji, was declared
functionally extinct in 2006 when scientists couldn’t
find a single individual dolphin.
One species of dolphin that swims just off the coast of
Peru in the Pacific Ocean recently suffered a very large
disaster. More than 3000 dolphin corpses have been
found on the beaches of Peru just this year. The largest
amount of dolphin deaths at one time in the entire
western hemisphere and the largest in the world since
the Europe stranding in the 1990’s.
