God's Presence And Departure
2 Chronicles 15:1, 2
W. Clarkson
It is characteristic ofthe Hebrew prophet that as the king comes back flushed
with victory he meets the conqueror, not with honied words of congratulation,
but with faithful words of admonition. What he says to the king may be taken
as applicable to the servant of God generally.
2. I. A PROPHETIC CONFIRMATION OF THE GOOD MAN'S
EXPERIENCE. "Jahve was withyou (has given you the victory) because ye
were with him (held to him)" (Keil). So far fidelity to Jehovahhad proved to
be the condition of prosperity. Under his banner they had marched to victory;
while they were true to him, he had been in the midst of them, and had been
there to bless them. This is the common, indeed the constant, experience of the
good. The service ofGod is always a success. It means rest of soul at all times;
it means calmness and a wise joy in prosperity; it means resignationand
comfort in the time of trouble; it means strength for duty and courage for
temptation; it means excellencyin life and hope in death. To be with God in
the sense and spirit of self-surrender to his will is to have his gracious
presence with us, shedding light and gladness on our path. This is the
testimony of the good.
II. A PROPHETIC PROMISE OF THE GOOD MAN'S HERITAGE. "If ye
seek him, he will be found of you." Behind us is a part (larger or smaller) of
our life, and we thank Godfor all that he has been to us as we have held on
our way. But before us is another portion; it may be a very serious, it may be
even a critical, passage ofour life. We shall want not only our own resources
at their best, and the kindest and wisestsuccourofour friends, but the near
presence and effective aid of our heavenly Father. We shall want his guidance,
that we may know the path we should take;his guardianship, that we may be
preservedfrom the wrong-doings, from the errors and mistakes, into which
we shall otherwise be betrayed; his illumination, that we may tightly
discharge our duties and rise to the height of our opportunities; his sustaining
grace, that we may bear ourselves bravely and meekly in the day of our
adversity and defeat. All this we shall have if we seek it truly. And that means
if we seek it
(1) in moral and spiritual integrity, our heart being seton the service of
Christ;
(2) with our whole heart, earnestly and perseveringly;
(3) believingly, building our hope on his Word.
3. III. I PROPHETIC WARNING OF THE GOOD MAN'S DANGER. "If ye
forsake him, he will forsake you."
1. There is a practicaldanger of spiritual and, therefore, of moral declension.
Such is our nature, that we are apt to let love become cold; to allow zeal to
wane and wither; to permit our best habits to be encroachedupon by the
pressure of lower cares and pleasures;to forsake God. The records of
Christian experience contain only too many instances ofsuch departure.
2. We have, then, to fear the withdrawal of God from us; the loss ofhis Divine
favour, of his indwelling Spirit, of his benediction and reward.
3. Therefore let us watchand pray, that we enter not. into the outer shadow of
condemnation. - C.

Prophet Azariah
Commemoratedon February 3
The Holy Prophet Azariah1 was son of Oded (or Addo) and lived during the
reign of King Asa (910-870 B.C. See2 Chronicles 15:1) who was the son and
successorof Abijah in the kingdom of Judah. Azariah came from the land of
5. Sembatha and urged the people not to worship false “gods,”but to remain
faithful to the Covenantwith the Lord.
Asa worshipedthe one true God, and removed the altars of foreign “gods”
from his land, tearing down the pillars and cutting down their sacredgroves.
He told the people to seek earnestlythe God of their fathers, and to obey the
Law and the Commandments. After removing the paganaltars and idols from
all the cities of Judah he commanded his people to fortify their cities with
walls and towers.
King Asa had 300,000warriors in Judah, and 280,000mighty warriors in the
land of Benjamin. According to the narratives of 2 Chronicles chapters 14 and
15, Zerah the Ethiopian2 went out againstJudah with a million men.
Asa prayed fervently to God, asking that he might prevail, even againstsuch
overwhelming odds. The Lord smote the Ethiopians and Asa’s army pursued
them and crushed them. He destroyed their towns and pillaged their cities,
and then he returned to Jerusalem.
After King Asa had won the victory, the Spirit of the Lord came upon
Azariah. He went out to meet Asa and said, “Hear me, King Asa, and all the
people of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. The Lord will be with you as long
as you are with Him, worshiping His name and observing His commandments.
When you seek Him you will find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will also
forsake you.” These words ought to be esteemedby every State and by all
people.
The Prophet Azariah reposedin peace and was buried in his field. In
iconographyhe is depicted as an old man with curly hair. The name Azariah
means “whomGod helps.”
1 It is said that Azariah was actually sonof Ananias (Tobit 5:12); perhaps an
error for Zachariahthe son of Addo (1 Esdras 6:1).
2 Zerah is a Hebrew name, and is not Ethiopian or Egyptian, as some have
said. https://oca.org/

NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: 15:1-7
1Now the Spirit of God came on Azariah the sonof Oded, 2and he went out
to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin:
the Lord is with you when you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will let
you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you. 3Formany days
Israelwas without the true God and without a teaching priest and without
law. 4But in their distress they turned to the Lord God of Israel, and they
sought Him, and He let them find Him. 5In those times there was no peace to
him who went out or to him who came in, for many disturbances afflicted all
the inhabitants of the lands. 6Nationwas crushed by nation, and city by city,
for Godtroubled them with every kind of distress. 7But you, be strong and do
not lose courage, forthere is reward for your work."
15:1 "the Spirit of God" This is an OT idiom of YHWH's empowering a
person to do His will.

15:2 Notice the reciprocal, conditionalcovenant. In this context it is the
Judean king who is calledon to seek YHWH and then YHWH will allow
Himself to be found.
There is no greaterblessing than the presence of YHWH! This presence
involves both human and divine will/volition. See full note at 2 Chr. 7:14 and
Deut. 4:29.
15:3 This verse calls Judah, "Israel." Forthe Chronicler the only true
"Israel" was the Davidic seedand the temple in Jerusalem.
The covenantpeople had fallen into a period of spiritual malaise.
without the true God (some rabbis see Elohim here as government leaders)
without a teaching priest
without the Law
What a sorry spiritual condition for the unique covenantpeople!
I have one pause about my previous comments in v. 7, "But you" seems to be
a textual markerthat vv. 3-7 are about the northern tribes' rebellious state
and not Judah's.
8. Josephus, Antiq. 8.12.2., seesthis as a future warning to Judah basedon their
obedience or disobedience to the covenant.
The Expositor's Bible Commentary, p. 487, and Barne's Notes On the Whole
Bible, p. 391, assertthat this paragraph refers to the period of the Judges,
therefore, is a flashback.
Obviously, no one knows!
15:4 This is the outworking of the promise of 2 Chr. 15:2. They recognized
their need and turned to the only source of help.
15:5 This describedthe danger of traveling in a country full of lawlessness.

NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: 15:8-15
8Now when Asa heard these words and the prophecy which Azariah the
son of Oded the prophet spoke, he took courage and removed the abominable
idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities which he
had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. He then restoredthe altar of the
Lord which was in front of the porch of the Lord. 9He gathered all Judah and
Benjamin and those from Ephraim, Manassehand Simeon who resided with
them, for many defectedto him from Israelwhen they saw that the Lord his
God was with him. 10So they assembledat Jerusalemin the third month of
the fifteenth year of Asa's reign. 11Theysacrificedto the Lord that day 700
oxen and 7,000 sheepfrom the spoil they had brought. 12Theyenteredinto
the covenantto seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and
soul; 13and whoeverwould not seek the Lord God of Israel should be put to
death, whether small or great, man or woman. 14Moreover, they made an
9. oath to the Lord with a loud voice, with shouting, with trumpets and with
horns. 15All Judah rejoicedconcerning the oath, for they had swornwith
their whole heart and had sought Him earnestly, and He let them find Him. So
the Lord gave them rest on every side.
15:8-15 Asa actedto fix the spiritual malaise (this material is paralleled in 1
Kgs. 15:9-15).
he removed the idols from the land, 2 Chr. 15:8 (cf. 1 Kgs. 15:12)
he restoredthe sacrificialaltarof the temple, 2 Chr. 15:8
he gathered all the faithful of both kingdoms to Jerusalem, 2 Chr. 15:9-10
they renewedtheir covenantwith YHWH (i.e., an oath, 2 Chr. 15:12,14,15)
took actionagainstall who would not follow Him, 2 Chr. 15:13 (i.e., Exod.
22:20;Deut. 13:6-9; 17:2-7; one person's sin affects the whole, cf. Joshua 7;
Rom. 5:12-21)
he initiated a major worship event, 2 Chr. 15:14
YHWH responded with peace and security for him, 2 Chr. 15:15
he restoredthe dedicatedthings to the temple, 2 Chr. 15:18 (cf. 1 Kgs. 15:15)
These reforms are very similar to those enactedby Hezekiah(cf. 2 Kings 16; 2
Chronicles 30). These verses show a terrible pattern of idolatry when
compared to 2 Chr. 14:2-4. This idolatry was recurrent!
15:8 The UBS Text Project, p. 461, suggests thatthis may refer to another
written prophetic source.
NASB, NRSV, TEV
‒ "Azariah the sonof Oded the prophet"
NKJV, JPSOA, REB, Vul.
‒ "the prophecy of Oded the prophet"
NJB
10. ‒ "the words of the prophecy"
LXX
‒ "the prophecy of Adad the prophet"
Peshitta
‒ "words of Azariah the son of Azor the prophet"
The MT has "and the prophecy, Oded the prophet." The UBS Text Project
gives this a "B" rating (some doubt).
The NASB goes back to 2 Chr. 15:1, while the MT seems to refer to a prophet
Oded (or a family of prophets) mentioned in 2 Chr. 28:9.
"and from the cities which he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim"
We know nothing about this incident. The Chronicler often combines
prophetic written sources that mention things/events that are not elaborated
on. The Chronicler is both an author and a complier.
15:9 "those from Ephraim, Manassehand Simeon" This is surprising! Simeon
was incorporatedinto Judah very early and had no independent existence.
Why it is included with a group from the northern tribes is uncertain.
15:10 "assembledatJerusalem" This is a covenantrenewalceremony(the
original affirmation is in Exod. 24:1-3) like
Moses heldin Deut. 29:1
Joshua held in Josh. 8:30-35;24:25
Samuel held in 1 Sam. 11:14
David held in 1 Chr. 13:2-5; 28;29
Same as 4.
Jehoiada held in 2 Chr. 23:16
Hezekiahheld in 2 Chr. 29:10
11. Josiahheld in 2 Chr. 34:31
Ezra held in Nehemiah 8
"the third month" This would be harvest time. It could relate to (1) the first
giving of the Law (cf. Exodus 19-20)or (2) the FeastofBooths (cf. Lev. 23:15-
16). This may be where later Judaism associatedthe Week of Booths with
commemorating the giving of the Law.
SPECIAL TOPIC:ANE CALENDARS
15:11 "from the spoil they had brought" This refers to 2 Chr. 14:14-15. This
spoil was from the crushing defeatof the invading army (i.e., 2 Chr. 14:9-15).
15:14 "with a loud voice, with shouting, with trumpets and with horns" These
actions could refer to worship or war(cf. 2 Chr. 13:15). The shout would be
an affirmation of faith (i.e., 2 Chr. 12:6).
This sounds like the OT precedentto 1 Thess. 4:16.
SPECIAL TOPIC:HORNS USED BY ISRAEL
NASB (UPDATED) TEXT: 15:16-19
16He also removedMaacah, the mother of King Asa, from the position of
queen mother, because she had made a horrid image as an Asherah, and Asa
cut down her horrid image, crushed it and burned it at the brook Kidron.
17Butthe high places were not removed from Israel; nevertheless Asa's heart
was blameless all his days. 18He brought into the house of God the dedicated
things of his father and his own dedicatedthings: silver and gold and utensils.
19And there was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa's reign.
15:16 Fertility worship had even spread into the royal family but Asa acted
and removed the Asherah (cf. 1 Kgs. 15:13).
"Maacah" This was the wife of Rehoboamand mother of Abijah (cf. 1 Kgs.
15:2; 2 Chr. 11:20,21,22). Apparently Asa's mother had the same name
(different father, cf. 1 Kgs. 15:10,13;2 Chr. 15:16). These common names
cause greatconfusionfor historians and Bible interpreters. This could be
Asa's grandmother.
12. 15:17 The local"high places" were not removed (cf. 1 Kgs. 15:14). Probably
because oflocalresistence. Religious traditions are hard to eradicate!Abijah
removed them in 2 Chr. 14:3, but they must have been rebuilt and used again
by Asa's day.
"Asa's heart was blameless allhis days" What a wonderful affirmation (cf. 1
Kgs. 15:11,14).
However, 2 Chronicles 16 shows that this was an overstatement(cf. 2 Chr.
15:10). Like so many Israelite kings, he started wellbut finished poorly.
SPECIAL TOPIC:BLAMELESS, INNOCENT,GUILTLESS, WITHOUT
REPROACH
15:19 This seems to be a clearstatement but it is hard to reconcile with 1 Kgs.
15:16 and 2 Chronicles 16. There have been severalproposedsolutions.
It refers to the splitting of the kingdom (see Edwin Thiele, The Mysterious
Numbers of the Hebrew Kings, pp. 82-84, 198, 209).
It was a theologicalwayto assertYHWH's blessing.
The NIV Study Bible suggests a change from 35th year to 25th year, and
therefore, refers to the conflict with Baasha, King of Israel.
For an attempt to reconcile these dates in Kings vs. Chronicles, see Gleason
Archer, Encyclopedia of Bible Difficulties, pp. 225-226.

PRAYER OF AZARIAH FROM THE APOCRAPHA
Why is Prayer of Azariah shown with the King James Bible?
1
And they walkedin the midst of the fire, praising God, and blessing the Lord.
2
Then Azarias stoodup, and prayed on this manner; and opening his mouth in
the midst of the fire said,
3
Blessedartthou, O Lord God of our fathers: thy name is worthy to be praised
and glorified for evermore:
4
For thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done to us: yea, true are
all thy works, thy ways are right, and all thy judgments truth.
5
14. In all the things that thou hastbrought upon us, and upon the holy city of our
fathers, even Jerusalem, thou hastexecuted true judgment: for according to
truth and judgment didst thou bring all these things upon us because ofour
sins.
6
For we have sinned and committed iniquity, departing from thee.
7
In all things have we trespassed, and not obeyed thy commandments, nor kept
them, neither done as thou hast commanded us, that it might go wellwith us.
8
Wherefore all that thou hast brought upon us, and every thing that thou hast
done to us, thou hast done in true judgment.
9
And thou didst deliver us into the hands of lawless enemies, mosthateful
forsakers ofGod, and to an unjust king, and the most wickedin all the world.
10
And now we cannot open our mouths, we are become a shame and reproach
to thy servants;and to them that worship thee.
11
Yet deliver us not up wholly, for thy name's sake, neitherdisannul thou thy
covenant:
12
And cause not thy mercy to depart from us, for thy beloved Abraham's sake,
for thy servant Issac's sake,and for thy holy Israel's sake;
13
15. To whom thou hast spokenand promised, that thou wouldestmultiply their
seedas the stars of heaven, and as the sand that lieth upon the seashore.
14
For we, O Lord, are become less than any nation, and be kept under this day
in all the world because ofour sins.
15
Neither is there at this time prince, or prophet, or leader, or burnt offering, or
sacrifice, oroblation, or incense, or place to sacrifice before thee, and to find
mercy.
16
Nevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted.
17
Like as in the burnt offerings of rams and bullocks, and like as in ten
thousands of fat lambs: so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day, and grant
that we may wholly go after thee: for they shall not be confounded that put
their trust in thee.
18
And now we follow thee with all our heart, we fear thee, and seek thy face.
19
Put us not to shame: but deal with us after thy lovingkindness, and according
to the multitude of thy mercies.
20
Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works, and give glory to thy name,
O Lord: and let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed;
21
16. And let them be confounded in all their powerand might, and let their
strength be broken;
22
And let them know that thou art God, the only God, and glorious over the
whole world.
23
And the king's servants, that put them in, ceasednotto make the oven hot
with rosin, pitch, tow, and small wood;
24
So that the flame streamedforth above the furnace forty and nine cubits.
25
And it passedthrough, and burned those Chaldeans it found about the
furnace.
26
But the angel of the Lord came down into the oven togetherwith Azarias and
his fellows, and smote the flame of the fire out of the oven;
27
And made the midst of the furnace as it had been a moist whistling wind, so
that the fire touched them not at all, neither hurt nor troubled them.
28
Then the three, as out of one mouth, praised, glorified, and blessed, Godin the
furnace, saying,
29
Blessedartthou, O Lord God of our fathers: and to be praised and exalted
above all for ever.
17. 30
And blessedis thy glorious and holy name: and to be praised and exalted
above all for ever.
31
Blessedartthou in the temple of thine holy glory: and to be praised and
glorified above all for ever.
32
Blessedartthou that beholdest the depths, and sittest upon the cherubims:
and to be praised and exalted above all for ever.
33
Blessedartthou on the glorious throne of thy kingdom: and to be praisedand
glorified above all for ever.
34
Blessedartthou in the firmament of heaven: and above all to be praised and
glorified for ever.
