Moore's Law
The future of Data storage
The future of RAM
Computer chips
 Moore's law describes a long-term trend in the history of computing hardware.
 Moore's law say that the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit
doubles approximately every two years so the capabilities of many electronic devices like:
 Processing speed.
 Memory capacity.
 Sensors.
 Pixels in digital cameras.
will be doubled in performance and capacity
every two years.
* A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter,
or about one ten-thousandth of the thickness of
a human hair.
Moore's Law
http://www.futuretimeline.net/
 From the 2020s onwards, it is possible that carbon nanotubes or a similar technology will reach the
mass market, creating a new paradigm that allows Moore's Law to continue.
 Further into the future – 2020 -, chips may become integrated directly with the brain, combining
AI/human intelligence and dramatically enhancing our cognitive and learning abilities.
 Ultimately, Moore's Law could lead to a "technological singularity" – a point in time when machine
intelligence is evolving so rapidly that humans are left far, far behind

What is carbon
nanotubes & its
advantages?
A Carbon Nanotube is a tube-shaped
material, made of carbon, having a
diameter measuring on the nanometer
scale.
Advantages :
1- Extremely small and lightweight, making
them excellent replacements for metallic
wires.
2- Resources required to produce them are
plentiful.
3- Are resistant to temperature changes,
meaning they function almost just as well
in extreme cold as they do in extreme heat.
 The memory capacity of the human brain has been estimated at between one and ten terabytes, with a
most likely value of 3 terabytes.
 Consumer hard drives are already available at this size.
The future of Data storage
The future of Data storage
Hard Drive
HAMR Disk drives
 Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording is a technology that will make room for 50TB HDDs in the
next few years, and upwards of 100TB in the next decade.
 Basically, HAMR technology includes a laser added to a hard drive head, which will heat up the
area that is being written to.
 Ultimately allowing data to be written on a smaller scale, and therefore increasing the amount of
data that can be stored on each platter within the drive.

The future of Data storage
Enterprise-grade SSDs reach 128TB of capacity
What is the
difference between
consumer SSD &
Enterprise SSD?
New memory technology is 1,000 times faster
http://www.futuretimeline.net/
• The explosion of connected devices and digital services is generating massive amounts of new
data.
• To make this data useful, it must be stored and analysed very quickly.
• This creating challenges for service providers and system builders who must balance cost, power
and performance trade-offs when they design memory and storage solutions.
• 3D XPoint technology combines the performance, density, power, non-volatility and cost
advantages of all available memory technologies on the market today.
• This technology is up to 1,000 times faster, with up to 1,000 times greater endurance than
NAND, and is 10 times denser than conventional memory.

Computer chips
Researchers have announced a
breakthrough in the manufacture of 7
nanometer (nm) computer chips,
enabling the trend of Moore's Law to
continue for the next few years
http://www.futuretimeline.net/
7 nanometer chips enable Moore's Law to continue
 IBM Research has announced the semiconductor industry's first 7nm (nanometer) node test
chips with functioning transistors.
 To achieve the higher performance, lower power , researchers had to bypass conventional
semiconductor manufacturing approaches.
 Industry experts consider 7nm technology crucial to meeting the anticipated demands of
future cloud computing and Big Data systems, cognitive computing, mobile products and other
emerging "exponential" technologies .

MOBILE COMPUTING
Mobile computing is
the usage of portable
technological devices.
MOBILE COMPUTING
Mobile Phones
Wearable technology
The Future Of Mobile Phones
 It is 2015.
 Your mobile is now much more than just a
communication device - more like a remote control
for your life. You still call it a "mobile" from habit,
but it is :-
• An organizer.
• Entertainment Device.
• Payment Device.
MOBILE COMPUTING
Trends in mobile technology: the next decade
MOBILE COMPUTING
2016 - Your smartphone will have a screen that lets you feel textures
Disney researchers have been hard at work developing touchscreens that let you feel texture. Through
electrostatic charges, your brain is tricked into feeling texture just by touching your device’s screen.
MOBILE COMPUTING
2022 - You will use your body as an input surface
• This is currently an emerging technology, but with interesting implications for user interface design.
• Known as 'bioacoustic sensing', this technology essentially uses highly sensitive acoustic sensors on your body,
which listen for the sound of your finger touching your skin.
• This allows the skin to be used as a finger surface, whereby you could dial a phone number onto your hand, for
example, or use your forearm as a scrolling interface. Tap near your wrist to scroll up, tap near your elbow to
scroll down.
Trends in mobile technology: the next decade
MOBILE COMPUTING
2023 - You will be able to control your smartphone with your mind
• instead of the headset format of today, we expect smart devices of 2023 to be reading our
brainwaves and allowing interaction with computers through thought alone.

MOBILE COMPUTING
 Smartphones Get Cool New Power Options
There’s been a recent breakthrough in battery technology that allows
smartphone users to charge their cellphones through motions, such as walking
or tapping the screen. Actually, even your body heat might be enough to give
your phone a charge in the future.
 Ultra-rapid charger
• Other trending battery technology includes an ultra-rapid charger that only
takes 30 seconds to charge your device. It’s expected to be mainstream by
2016.

JUST OVER THE HORIZON
 Scientists have developed a self-healing, flexible sensor that
mimics the self-healing properties of human skin.
 Cuts or scratches to the sensors "heal" themselves in less than
one day.
 Future possible applications could include the creation of
‘electronic skin’ and prosthetic limbs that allow wearers to ‘feel’
changes in their environments.
Self-healing sensor brings 'electronic skin' closer to reality
JUST OVER THE HORIZON
3-D printing definition :
 3D printing or additive manufacturing is a process of making three
dimensional solid objects from a digital file.
 The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes.
 In an additive process an object is created by laying down successive
layers of material until the entire object is created.
 Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross-
section of the eventual object.

3D-printed human organs
 By 2025 – after testing on animals – customized 3D-printing of
major human organs is becoming feasible for the first time.
 Although yet to be fully perfected (as certain types of organs
remain too complex), this is nevertheless a major boost for life
extension efforts.
 In the coming decades, more and more of the 78 organs in the
human body will become printable

• In 2015, the United Kingdom introduces Finger Vein
Authentication Technology (VeinID) to improve banking security.
• These devices are initially provided to corporate clients, but soon
made available to regular consumers.
• Desktop card readers, phone authentication and PIN codes are no
longer needed as vein pattern recognition is both faster and more
reliable.
• It is practically impossible to spoof or replicate – even more
accurate than fingerprint ID – .
• The finger must be attached to a live human body in order for
veins in the finger to be scanned.

Personal biometric scanners for online banking
• The process takes just two seconds, using :
• A near-infrared (NIR) LED
• Monochrome CCD camera sensor
• Monochrome CCD camera sensor make the red
pigment in blood (haemoglobin) absorb NIR light , with
veins appearing as dark lines.
