2. Sheffield Tree Felling
• Residents of Rivelin Road determined to block the removal of 31 lime trees - 700 all together which is the
second longest avenue of lime trees in the UK - 3 and a half miles
• Trees would be felled because they may be damaged when the road has been resurfaced - protester: “That’s
a bit like saying I might graze my finger and it might go septic so I’m going to amputate my hand now. That’s
lazy and unacceptable.”
• Contractor and Council claim the trees that are being removed are diseased or dangerous - protesters
disagree
• 2 protesters arrested aged 70 and 72 - held in police cell for 8 hours following a dawn raid in November on
their quiet residential street - woken at 4:30am by contractors knocking on their doors asking them to move
their cars
• STAG - Sheffield Tree Action Groups - leads a city wide campaign to encourage the local authority to adopt a
responsible and sustainable approach to the management of Sheffield’s tree population
