 Narrative from lyrics: Kate Nash’s video is about a
relationship which is experiencing problems and it is
narrated from her point of view. From the music video
the audience are able to make assumptions that the
problems have developed from a lack of respect from
both sides of the individuals. For example the man
doesn’t listen to Kate and gets violent when he is
jealous. The lyrics highlight that Kate’s actions are
aimed to hurt her partner due to the violence and
jealousy shown from the male protagonist.
 Likewise throughout the music video the director has
decided to base the storyline on a narrative as no
performance is included, therefore this meant that the
director had to take into consideration the likeability of
the actors and artists used as they will be the main

playing events in chronological order being beginning to end. During the
video the main female protagonist displays her feelings and opinions on
her relationship through the given lyrics and the shots and angles
chosen. The audience are immediately aware of the current time of the
scene due to the establishing shot including a range of traditional props,
e.g. a wind up telephone all portraying the 1960’s period.
 The video uses the aforementioned narrative structure to gain constant
interest and focus throughout influencing the audience to find out the
cause and effect of the displayed scenes highlighting Roland Barthes
theory. Although the narrative is traditional it still involves a variety of
twists and turns allowing the audience to become intrigued due to the
enigma given. Furthermore the inclusion of Todorovs theory is
emphasised throughout due to frequent reference to an equilibrium,
disruption and resolution. Likewise the pace of the narrative is evidently
linked to Todorovs theory as during the recognition of the disruption the
speed of the scenes begin to fasten allowing the audience to maintain
engaged due to wanting to find out the resolution of the disturbance.
