2. KARMA Genre - Our movie will represent the psychological and gory horror because for the majority of the film we are shown a change of mentality in the protagonist which plays on the fears of the audience. It is also a gory horror because there is use of graphic violence as the movie comes to its climax. Target Audience - Due to our film genre and some of the content within, such as sexual scenes and very graphic scenes of violence we have decided to give our film a certification of an ‘18’ as this is what we feel is an appropriate age for viewers to see the movie. Although the genre of horror would usually be geared towards the male demographic, we feel that since we have altered certain conventions, such as the gender of the protagonist, our film will appeal to both the male and female audience.
3. Aim of the Trailer - In our trailer, our main aim is to advertise the forthcoming film, “Karma”. However, it is also to create suspense and leaves the audience wanting more as a result. Narrative Elements - In the trailer, we aim to start off in a state of equilibrium. The husband (Steve) and wife (Willow) in our trailer will appear to be happily married, which changes when the husband is seen with another woman, Willow’s best friend (Helen). After finding out about the affair, Willow sends Steve and Helen notes that are not shown to the audience in the trailer, thus creating mystery and suspense. The editing then gets faster, showing flashes of an assortment of images ranging from ropes to eyes and blood. This is followed by a slower sequence of images which show Willow walking toward Steve in the bathroom holding a knife. There is then another sequence of fast paced images, which show more of the horror we intend to portray. The trailer will end by showing a slow shot that pans around Helen’s shoulder to then allow the audience to read the note she receives. We are then shown the title, “Karma”.
4. Style of the Trailer - The trailer is going to be conveyed as being quite modern in its style as the characters will be portrayed as normal people living regular lives. At the start of the trailer we plan to show how happy and secure the relationship of the protagonist and her husband is. The trailer will then become much darker and more terrifying as it progresses. The props we will be using in the trailer are a knife, fake blood, rope, and duct tape as well as maybe using a basement to create more of a sense of isolation. These props will allow us to create a realistic picture within our horror trailer. This is also the same with the costumes as me want our characters to look as normal as possible at the beginning, with the protagonist showing change in her mentality as after the beginning of the trailer she will become a much darker character.
5. Non-Diegetic Material - The titles in our trailer will be shown quite quickly as to not disrupt the pace of the trailer. The title screens will be shown near the beginning of the trailer telling the audience the name of the director and actors. The music will reflect the mood of each section, so that the music will be fast and jumpy in the faster paced sections. Links with other Media Texts - In linking our trailer with other media texts, we have decided to focus on the ‘note’ element of the narrative. This is a central theme of the narrative and allows us to create suspense and portray the horror constituent that could be exposed during the upcoming movie. To add to this, we will be using the central protagonist’s face (Willow) as a unique selling point for the film letting the audience build up recognition and therefore linking her to the movie, which will be a technique allowing us to entice the audience through advertising.
6. Logistics of Filming - We plan to use Nicola, Sophie and a boy/man to portray our main characters. We chose to use Nicola because we feel she could take on the role as Willow very well, conveying both a normal person as well as being able to adapt her look to make herself appear to be an odd person. This is mainly because she has very dark hair so could easily fit the role. We are using Sophie to portray the woman that Willow’s husband has an affair with because with her golden hair, she represents the light in this mans life, someone that he can turn to to escape his crazy wife. We hope to use a clean cut man, who is very normal looking to act the part of Steve. We have decided to convey him to be a normal man because he is totally unaware who he is actually married to, as she is secretly plotting to kill him.Places we want to film include; a house (bathroom, sitting room), a field and possibly a basement/ garage. We want the house to be used when we want everything to look normal, yet, with the music and acting, we will be giving the illusion that something is going wrong. Both the field and garage seem to be places that can be eerie, spooky places, which will be determined by our use of lighting.
