Battery Support System

Total Battery Support
CASP/1500 is a microprocessor-based
precision instrument for maintaining any
rechargeable battery at the peak of performance. Through the systematic use of
CASP/1500, battery operated equipment
becomes more reliable, safer, and far more
cost effective. CASP/1500 optimizes the
effectiveness of batteries as a component
of electronic systems.

CASP/1500 Functions
CASP/1500 has six channels which
automatically process up to six batteries of
any type sequentially. This system performs
the following functions:
Battery Reconditioning The CASP/1500 uses
Christie’s exclusive ReFLEX charger in the
processing of nickel-cadmium batteries. In
addition to charging these batteries faster and
more efficiently, the unique current waveform
generated by the charger actually reconditions
the battery, substantially eliminating battery
“memory” and often restoring batteries to
serviceable condition. Consistent use of
the ReFLEX charger also minimizes
battery deterioration.

Features and Benefits
• User-friendly operation
• Returns worn-out NiCads to
useful service
• Features exclusive ReFLEX charging
®

• Provides shorter, more efficient
charge cycles
• Enhanced processing and printer
capabilities
• Functions with any rechargeable
battery type—even new technologies
• Automatically recognizes battery type
• Convenient integral keyboard
• Reduces overall battery costs
• Can be used worldwide with inputs from
90 to 265 VAC and frequencies
from 47 to 440 Hz

Battery Recognition When a battery is
connected to any one of the channels, the
CASP/1500 recognizes the type of battery
connected to it, and provides the exact
processing which is appropriate for
that battery.
Battery Analysis The CASP/1500 can
analyze the charge and discharge capacity of
any battery connected to the system, and
report that condition on an LCD display or
optional serial printer. From the display or the
hard-copy printout, it can be determined
what action is appropriate for the battery.
Battery Charging Because the CASP/1500
has been designed to process rechargeable
batteries of all types—nickel-cadmium,
nickel-metal hydride, lead-acid, lithium, and
others—the system is able to provide precisely
the kind and amount of charging current each
battery requires. This capability includes
reverse-pulse, constant-current, two-level
constant-current, and constant-potential
charging, as well as optimized fast charging or
trickle charging. In addition, batteries can be
discharged for storage or shipment.

SYSTEM OPERATION
The CASP/1500 is an intelligent battery
support system which provides analysis,
charging, and reconditioning functions for
rechargeable batteries. Up to six batteries of
varied types may be connected to the
system simultaneously. Battery inputs are
sequentially polled, identified, and
appropriately processed.

battery identifier or programming aid. In
addition, an internal speaker emits various
tones for input verifications, errors, and
process termination. The CASP/1500 can be
connected to an optional serial printer, which
provides a printout of the processes which
have been performed, or a plot of battery
charge and discharge curves.

The brain of the system is a microprocessor,
which initiates and controls the process the
user has selected. This process is carried out
automatically, using the battery parameters
entered into the microprocessor’s memory
during programming.

Programming of the CASP/1500 may be
accomplished by means of the alphanumeric
keypad on the instrument’s front panel. It is
also possible from the keypad to program the
CASP/1200 and CASP/1100.

ReFLEX CHARGING METHOD
The heart of Christie’s CASP/1500 system is the ReFLEX
charger. This charger produces positive current charging pulses,
alternated with sharp, negative current discharge pulses. This
reverse pulse charging waveform prevents the formation of
gasses across the plate area of nickel-cadmium batteries, and
restores the crystal structure of the cadmium anodes. Charging
efficiency is thereby greatly improved, and the battery actually
undergoes electrochemical restoration.

The CASP/1500 is a technologically
sophisticated system, yet very simple and
straightforward in operation. As such, it is the
most advanced battery support equipment on
the market for its chosen applications.

The status of each selected process may be
monitored on the LCD display. The display
can also serve as a digital voltmeter or
ammeter for the connected batteries, or as a

CONTROLS AND INDICATORS

The CASP/1500 has an integral LCD display unit which provides a readout for all
measurement and report functions.

All controls necessary to operate and program the CASP/1500
are located on the instrument’s front panel. Keys are grouped
according to the functions they perform.
