Herons live in swamps, marshes, and shorelines near bodies of fresh or salt water, where they use islands or wooded areas to build nests out of twigs. They eat a variety of fish, frogs, insects, small birds and animals that they swallow whole using their beaks. Herons nest in trees or on the ground, with females laying 3 to 7 eggs per clutch that are sometimes stolen by other birds, and they nest together in colonies called rookeries.
