Editor's Notes
Been officially in business for just about 5 months now. Prior to this, I did some projects “on the side” of my full time job. Before I go into the business stuff, let me tell you a little bit about myself.
Ever notice how when we meet people, it’s more common to be asked, “what do you DO” rather than anything about who you ARE? Let me tell you a little bit about both. Ok, ready to talk business stuff?
So I can make sure to meet your needs, let’s take a few minutes to think about some questions you have about being an entrepreneur, consulting, contracting. Feel free to ask anything you are wondering about, and I will do my best to answer. Take a couple post its, and jot down your questions. When you are done, please pass them around to me. Thanks
Consultant: Person who partners directly with a business to provide a service. This person may submit proposals to earn business. Invoices go directly to the hiring organization. Typically one would be an LLC or Sole Proprietor in this case. Contractor: Person who contracts with a placement agency or organization. The placement agency finds work for the contractor at an organization, and the contractor gets paid through the placement agency, after the agency takes their “finder’s fee”. The placement agency bills the organization. Either way, you may be referred to as a vendor, contractor, 3 rd party, partner, consultant, etc. when you are working inside the organization! Naming: Will you use your name, create a company name, how will you select your name? Share YG Learning Story. Niche: What is your specialty? Will you offer a wide variety of services to a narrower audience, or a narrow variety of services to a wide audience? Triangle Model. Mechanic Example . Networking : What is your networking strategy? How will you get yourself in front of potential clients? Share personal example of: ASTD Board, PACT, free Special Interest Group meetings, talking to former colleagues, meeting with design agencies. Financial: Taxes, which include state, federal, and self-employment taxes, among others, run about 37%...round up to 40% to be safe. There are self-employed 401k plans available as well. Barter System : Who can help you, in exchange for your help, to reduce startup or operating fees? Example of website design for massage, or networking connections for help on e-learning stuff.
The important thing is: how can you grow, what can you learn from this experience, as you have from other career situations?
SCORE – counselors to Americas small business – one stop shopping for all your start up needs LinkedIn – networking --- tips after informational and regular interviews Professional Associations – memberships do have a small fee…but…let me tell you a story…also, many have free subgroups, why not start there? What has been easiest? Marketing, Networking, sharing passion for my work with others What has been hardest? Filing, Admin, Accounting Keeping my business hat on – I love to help others, remembering that my time is worth something too What will I be changing? Resume, Transitional Coaching – cannot spend so many hours helping for free while I am growing business Firmer decision points on when to take which projects (example General Mills)
