4. DISORDERS OF PERCEPTION
Hallucination is defined as a false perception without any external object or sensory stimulus.
e.g. perceiving that the wall is talking to you.
Illusion is defined as false interpretation of an external object or stimulus, which has real existence,
e.g. a person may mistake rope as a snake.
Hyperesthesia : increased intensity of sensations.
Hypoesthesia : decreased intensity of sensations.
Micropsia : person sees objects smaller than they really are.
Macropsia : person sees objects larger than original one.
Porropsia : person sees objects farther away than actual distance.

6. DISORDERS OF THOUGHT, THINKING & SPEECH
Delusion (disturbance of thought)
it is a wrongly held Belief, A misconception that firmly held in the face of reality and rational argument.
e.g. Believing that earth is flat.
Retarded thinking : process of thinking gets slowed down.
Thought blocking : process of thinking gets blocked.
Mutism : complete absence of speech.
Compulsion : is a behavior that follows the obsession, e.g. washing hands frequently as person feels that
his hands are dirty.
Verbigeration : senselessly or uselessly repeating some words or phrase.
Neologism : means formation of new words which are not be understood and not found in dictionary.

FUNCTIONS
Amnesia (loss of memory)
two types : Retrograde amnesia (loss of memory from past)
Antegrade amnesia (inability of remember new memory)
Confusion : the thinking process lacks clarity and coherence.
Clouding of Consciousness : there is mild impairment of awareness of self and environment.
Delirium : it is characterized by clouding of consciousness with decreased interest in environment
followed by amnesia.
Confabulation : a false memory that the patient believes to be true.

Phobia
Phobia means an irrational fear of an object, situation or actually often leading to persistent
avoidance of the feared object, situation or activity.
Types
Panic : it is a severe state of an anxiety characterized by catatonic motor behavior.

Somnambulism : It is a condition in which a person walks about in his sleep. This is also called as
sleep walking.
Somnolentia or semi –somnolence : This condition is midway between sleep and wakefulness.
This condition is also called as sleep drunkenness.
Impulse : it is sudden and irresistible force or desire compelling a person to do an act without motive
or thought.
Kleptomania - steal objects/articles of small value
Pyromania - to set fire/objects on fire
Dipsomania - to drink alcohol
Multilomania - hurt/torture animal
Trichotillomania – pull out one’s own hair.
