Advocating for Change
Issues in Third World Development
ECON230
Gary Zander
Trinity Western University
Langley, British Columbia
Introduction
What can one
person do?
What resources
does one person
have?
Make a list of
resources you
have.
Introduction
What is advocacy?
Advocacy for the poor is speaking up
for those who do not have influence on
decisions made concerning their lives.
 Speak up for those who cannot speak for
themselves, for the rights of all who are
destitute. Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.
 Proverbs 31:8-9
Christian Responses
Should Christians be advocates?
Consider these examples:
 Moses advocating to Pharaoh
 Jesus advocates to the Father
 Wilberforce and abolition of slavery
Context for Advocacy
We can speak out for:
1. Groups of People
 Night commuters in Uganda
 HIV/AIDS affected families in Cambodia
2. Specific Issues
 Health: lack of antiretroviral drugs in Africa
 Justice: releasing prisoners

But who will listen?
Who are we advocating to?
