2. What is HFMD ?
• Is a common infection caused
by a group of viruses
• Occurs mainly in children
under 10 years old but can also
occur in adults.
• Children are more likely to be
at risk for infection and illness
because they are less likely
than adults to have antibodies
to protect them.
• Is characterized by sores in the
mouth and a rash on the hands
and feet.

4. • People with HFMD are most
contagious during the first
week of their illness.
• However, they may sometimes
remain contagious For weeks
after symptoms go away
• This is why you should always try to
maintain good hygiene, like washing
hands often with soap and water for at
least 20 seconds, to reduce your chance
of getting and spreading HFMD.

5. How is it spread ?
• The illness spreads by person-to-person contact
with an infected person's:
Close contact, such as kissing, hugging, or
sharing cups and eating
The virus spreads through the air
The droplets from coughs and sneezes of infected people.
The virus is most often spread by person with
unwashed, virus-contaminated hands and by contact
with virus – contaminated surfaces.
Contact with poop, for example when
changing a diaper
Contact with blister fluid
6. Symptoms of HFMD include the
following
• Fever :- temperature 38cͦ – 39cͦ
may be present for 24-28 hours
• Headache
7. • The rash develops over 1-2 days.
The rash has flat or raised red sports,
sometimes with blisters.
The Rash usually located on
the hands, feet and buttocks
• Ulcers in the throat or mouth
or on the tongue
8. • Sore throat
• Runny nose
• Vomiting & Diarrhea
• Fatigue
• Loss of appetite
9. Complications of HFMD
• Please go to nearest clinic or emergency unit if the following symptoms occur:
Difficulty in breathing
Face turning blue or pale
Drowsiness and disorientation
Severe headache or irritable
Stiff neck
Dizziness
Vomiting or poor oral intake
Decreased urination or dry tongue
• After contact with HFMD, children come down with
symptoms in 3-6 days. An infected child should avoid school
and crowded places for at least 7 days after the symptoms of
HFMD have appeared.
10. Prevention
• FOOD CARE
Suck on ice pops or ice chips.
Eat ice cream or sherbet.
Drink plenty of water.
Drink cold beverages, such as
milk or ice water.
Avoid acidic foods and beverages,
such as citrus fruits, fruit drinks and
soda.
Avoid salty or spicy foods.
Eat soft foods that don't require
much chewing.
Rinse your mouth with warm water
after meals.
11. Good personal hygiene is the best way to protect yourself and your child from
getting HFMD.
• Wash hands with soap and water before and after eating and after
going to the toilet.
• Do not share your food, drinks, plate, bowl, glass while eating. Do
not share towels, toothbrushes or other personal items.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or
sneezing. Throw used tissues into the rubbish bin and immediately
wash your hands with soap and water.
• Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging, or sharing eating
utensils or cups with people with hand, foot, and mouth disease.
