- 2. What is Influenza (the Flu)? ļ Flu is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. ļ Flu can be mild to severe and, at times, can cause death.
- 3. How Flu Spreads A. When a person with flu coughs or sneezes near you.
- 4. How Flu Spreads B. When you touch something that has flu viruses on it and then you touch your mouth or nose with your hand.
- 5. How Flu Spreads C. By close contact with people who have the flu virus.
- 6. ā¢ High fever ā¢ Cough ā¢ Sore throat ā¢ Body aches ā¢ Headache Flu Symptoms ā¢ Chills ā¢ Tiredness ā¢ Runny or stuffy nose ā¢ Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea (more common in children)
- 7. Getting the flu vaccine every year is the single best way to fight the flu. āFlu Shotsā
- 8. ā¢ Get enough sleep. ā¢ Exercise to stay strong. ā¢ Drink lots of fluids. ā¢ Eat healthy foods. ā¢ Try to stay away from people while they are sick. Healthy Habits Can Stop Flu
- 9. Good Manners = Good Prevention ā Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Donāt have a tissue? ā Cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder if you donāt have a tissue. Then wash your hands or use a hand sanitizer!
- 10. Wash Flu Viruses Away! ā¢ Wash your hands often with soap and water. ā Make sure to wash after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose! ā Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
- 11. You can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Rub the gel or foam all over your hands and fingers until they dry. What if thereās no soap and water?
- 12. Stay Home if You Are Sick! Keep your germs to yourself! Flu Spreads Quickly! āŗWherever lots of things are shared like in public places, at school, or at work, hand washing will help prevent infection. āŗStock up on tissues, hand sanitizer and related flu season items now.

- Influenza affects the lungs and isnāt the same as the āstomach fluā. Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) are caused by different viruses than what cause influenza.
- A sneeze can travel over 100 miles per hour. No wonder the flu can spread so fast! People with the flu can spread it to others up to about six feet away through coughs and sneezes. Do demonstration with the spray bottle of colored water and paper towels to show how germs can spread when sneezes arenāt covered.
- One way to tell the difference between a cold and the flu is that flu symptoms usually come on quickly. Cold symptoms typically come on more gradually. If you have a cold, itās rare to have a fever or headache. Body aches and tiredness are mild in a cold but with the flu it feels like youāve been run over by a truck. Itās common to have a sore throat, stuffy nose, and sneezing. You can spread the flu to others up to a day before you start showing any symptoms and up to 7 days after becoming sick.
- 8-10 hours of sleep per night 60 minutes of activity at least 3 days a week and that should include muscle strengthening activities and bone strengthening activities
