Year 2013 has been a special year for Tecnova and
for the Agro-Industrial sector which is at the heart
of it. One of the most relevant milestones has been
the official inauguration of new premises for Tecnova
headquarters – a building that we own and which
hosts technological and research spaces at the ser-
vice of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture, the
Post-harvesting and the Packaging sectors. It was
built thanks to both the funding and the support of
the Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, to-
gether with the Department for Innovation of the
Regional Government of Andalusia. The building is
located at a key place such as PITA – the Technolog-
ical Park of Almería.
After a lot of effort and hard-work, something that
used to be a project is now a reality, a reality to be
able to provide quick solutions to the sector, thus
becoming a meeting point for their companies. This
is thanks to Tecnova’s pilot plants and labs, adapted
to current needs in the field of the Post-harvesting
and Packaging sectors, as well as to horticultural
production technology - for offering real-life and
practical solution to organizations in the Agro-In-
dustrial sector.
In this sense, and regarding infrastructures, we could
also mention our 2nd
site, known as Experimental
Centre, and located near the village of Viator. But
it will be dealt more in detail in the Report of 2014,
since it was inaugurated this very year, in April 2014.
With these two sites and the guarantee of 12 years

of experience, Tecnova has managed to create a
business model adapted to the needs of companies,
oriented to them, and focused on obtaining resour-
ces. Actually, we have managed to reach a turnover
of 2 million Euros in 2013, with a 71% of private fun-
ding and a 29% of public one.
It is because of this that I would like to stress the va-
lue of the work carried out with the entities that are
part of the Agro-Industrial cluster, the Marketing,
Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors. In this way,
we have showed our value for certainly strengthen
agriculture and food & nutritional safety: working in
new lines of interest for the sector, working adapting
ourselves to sectors need in advance, and setting
quality and customer satisfaction (an increasingly
demanding one each day) as our main objectives.
With this idea in mind, in June this year, we achie-
ved one of our goals – to be considered as Support
Centre for Technological Innovation at national level
by the Spanish Ministry for Economy & Competi-
tiveness. This means setting Tecnova as a model
Technological Centre for organisations all around
Spain when it comes to research.
In relation to this, collaboration agreements and
contracts have been signed with public and private
bodies in order to promote joint actions for the de-
velopment of the sector, with a clear aim – to get
our efforts together to be side by side with compa-
nies to boost R&D-i, or to help the sector in adap-
ting itself to new market needs. This can be done
by means of internationalisation and inter-business
cooperation, thus making it possible to create jobs
and also richness for the province of Almería.
We must not forget that all of this would not have
been possible if it was not for the whole team wor-
king at the Foundation. In this sense, I would like to
take this opportunity to thank all the staff of Tec-
nova Foundation, as well as to the governing team
(Managing Board, Governing Council and Board
members). All of them have given added value to
Tecnova, something which no doubt has contribu-
ted to enriching and highlighting us as a quality or-
ganisation which is at the service of companies.
Moreover, I would also like to thank the companies
which have joined Tecnova in 2013, among which
we could mention: Agrofresh Fruits and Vegetables

Taking this as a starting point, I would like to con-
clude my letter bearing in mind an important cha-
llenge for the future, which is to continue working
for the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture, and for the
Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors, with the
same drive, effort and positivism that we have ma-
naged to keep intact during previous years.
Finally, I am convinced that perseverance and in-
novation are the keys to help to improve the future
and so achieve increased productivity and compe-
titiveness. In this sense, I would like to encourage
all companies in the sector to be part of a com-
mon challenge (Tecnova’s and our own) – to achie-
ve the involvement and unity that are necessary to
strengthen even further our sector, cooperating to-
gether and setting it as one of the most relevant
nation-wide.

The Foundation for Auxiliary Technologies for Agricul-
ture (Fundación Tecnova) was born on 9th of January,
2001. It is a non-profit private entity listed in the Re-
gistry of Foundations from the Regional Ministry of So-
cial Affairs of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia
(Spain) since 25th May, 2001, and together with more
than 120 companies of the field of the Auxiliary Industry
and Services for Agriculture.
In March 2007, it was qualified as Technological Centre
of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture at Andalusian le-
vel by the Regional Ministry for Innovation, Science &
Business and in June 2013, it was qualified by the Mi-
nistry for Innvation Science & Business as Centre for
Support for Technological Innovation at Spain.
The MISSION of TECNOVA Technological Centre is to
provide an added value, promoting innovation and te-
chnological development while favouring business com-
petiveness in the agriculture auxiliary industry sector. It
works at international level and with the collaboration of
all the agents involved in the process.
The VISION of this Technological Centre is to be a ben-
chmark and a provider of technological knowledge with
an international view, regarding techniques to be applied
in: agrochemistry, greenhouse construction, climate and
environment control, packaging and containers, en-
gineering, laboratories, agricultural and handling ma-
chinery, plastics, biological production, ferti-irrigation,
seeds, seedbeds, cultivation substrate, waste manage-
ment & environment.
The OPERATIONAL MODEL of TECNOVA Technological
Centre is based on strategic working commissions. The-
se are integrated by representatives of all implied sub-
sectors, for a more optimised and comprehensive view,
together with a further specialisation, in accordance with
current business fabric.
The PURPOSE of TECNOVA Technological Centre is the
technological development, promotion and commercia-
lisation of the Auxiliary Industry and Services for Agri-
culture, by means of innovation, competitiveness and
training promotion. For the said purpose, TECNOVA ca-
rries out as many main and complementary activities as
necessary, especially:
a)	Carrying out Investigation, Technological Develop-
ment and Innovation (R&D+i) activities in areas rela-
ted to production, commercialisation & the Auxiliary
Industry for Agriculture (Agroindustry).
b)	Promotion of relations between the members of the
Foundation, as well as between the Foundation and
the several other actors involved in the Science, Te-
chnology and Business system.
c)	Collaboration and cooperation with other national
and International bodies and organisations, in order
to reach common goals and/or to participate in na-
tional and international programmes.
d)	Provision of assistance and of advanced technologi-
cal and engineering services in the mentioned field.
e)	Carrying out technological surveillance and collabo-
rating in the transfer of Research results and Tech-
nologies in this field.
f)	 Organisation of training activities, technical con-
ferences and sessions for the improvement of the
scientific and technical education of citizens. Toge-
ther with the organisation of other types of techno-
logical events, such as fairs or conferences.
g)	Promotion and coverage of reports, publications,
studies and statistical data, including prospective
ones, in relation to the aforementioned sector.
h)	Carrying out promotion and commercialisation ac-
tions for this industry.
i)	 Engagement in any other general activity which
could be of interest for the sector.

Governing Council
The Governing Council is in charge of governing, mana-
ging and representing the Foundation, which will meet
with its foundational aims while being able to delegate
powers to one or more of its members. Competences
include sorting out any issues concerning the governing,
managing and representation of the Foundation, as well
as the interpretation and edition of the Statutes.
The first Governing Council meeting of the year was held
on the 5th of June, with the following Agenda: report by
the President, overview and approval of budget, yearly
inventory and accounts, auditing report of 2012, as well
as approval of new members and acceptance of their
position, among other issues.
During this meeting, and event also took place for bi-
dding farewell to Mr. Alfredo Sánchez, celebrating his
career as 2nd Vice-President of Tecnova on behalf of
the Technological Park of Almería.
On the 26th of November, a 2nd meeting of the Gover-
ning Council took place, in which the following was on
the Agenda: approval of Action Plan 2014, overview of
applications to join the Foundation (followed by appro-
val, if deemed convenient), report by the President, and
other issues of interest to the Foundation.

New services and challenges for the
R&D+I Department
Thanks to the new Tecnova headquarters, the Tech-
nological Centre will be able to offer real servic-
es to companies, due to its perfectly prepared and
equipped facilities in the area of Post-harvesting and
Packaging Technology, as well as Horticultural Pro-
duction Technology.
Moreover, we can offer a 12h field located in Viator
(Almería) as Experimental Centre, which represents a
technological showcase for the companies within the
Auxiliary Industry. This centre hosts greenhouse struc-
tures of several types in which it is possible to carry out
agronomical trials with a view to assess products and
technologies, or to develop new crops, among other.
With these two sites, Tecnova can offer direct servic-
es covering all value chain, ranging from production in
the fields to post-harvesting, and up to the final con-
sumer, thanks to the advice of a specialised working
team and to a technology that is tailored to customer
needs.

The Ministry for Science and Innovation, currently
the Ministry for Economy
and Competitiveness, ac-
knowledged the contri-
bution of the Tecnova TC
in Technological Transfer
by means of its registra-
tion in the OTRI Register.
This acknowledgement is
the highest point in the evolution of the Technological
Centre in terms of promoting innovation and spread-
ing its results in the field of the Auxiliary Industry for
Agriculture.
The OTRI is a service offered by Tecnova TC in charge
of promoting and managing the relations of the Cen-
tre with the world of innovation and with corporate
technological development in the field of research. It
is also the unit responsible for promoting and spread-
ing the results of R&D+I projects carried out by the
Foundation to the public, as well as to provide infor-
mation on new funding lines for businesses.
Participation in the bi-annual
International Conference
“Biomicroworld” 2013
Tecnova has participated, with the presentation of a
research poster, in the prestigious bi-annual Inter-
national Conference “Biomicroworld” 2013: “V Inter-
national Conference of Environmental, Industrial and
Applied Microbiology”, held in the “Universidad Com-
plutense”, in Madrid. The report presented was on
the results obtained in a research work in which the
application of several physical treatments was stud-
ied, such as Type-C and thermic ultraviolet radiation
to reduce the impact of rottenness and so improve
the lifespan of ecological lemons imported across the
sea from Chile.

Participation in the Forum for
Innovation and Technology in the
Agro-Alimentary sector “FOOD
I&DT” (Lisbon)
Tecnova researchers have presented two R&D+I pro-
jects to the Forum for Innovation and Technology
within the Agro-Alimentary sector known as “FOOD
I&DT”, framed within the International Show “Alimen-
taria & Horexpo”, held in Lisboa.More specifically, the
device presented was one used for dry disinfection
using UV-C radiation in fruit and vegetable handling
lines, developed by Ingro Machinery, with initial re-
search support by Tecnova. This project received the
3rd prize in a competition for innovative projects. The
prize was given by the State Secretary for Food and
Agro-alimentary Research of Portugal himself - Mr.
Nuno Vieira e Brito. The 2nd project dealt with NIR
technology for the measurement of Bix degrees in
melon and watermelon.

Reducing the high incidence of Penicillium digitatum over organic lemon, by using environmentally friendly
treatments, based on the use of emergent technology as ultraviolet light combined with thermal treatments.
Materials and methods
In the present work the incidence of combinations of different doses of UV-C with the use of moderate to high storage temperature before cold storage, on
overall quality and shelf life of organic lemon was evaluated. Ultraviolet light in electromagnetic spectrum range between 200-280 nm (type C) has a strong
effect against microorganism growth.
Summary treatments
1. CT: Control.
2. TT (Thermal treatment): application of 35 ºC during 24 hours previous cold storage.
3. UVm: moderate UVC doses (1kJ/m2).
4. UVh: high UVC dose (4kJ/m2).
5. UVm + TT: 1kJ/m2 + application of 35 ºC for 24 hours previous cold storage.
6. UVh + TT: 4kJ/m2 + application of 35 ºC for 24 hours previous cold storage.
Analytical determinations:
1. Evolution of color (CIELab system).
2. Evaluation of incidence of Penicillum. digitatum.
3. Visual appearance.
Results
 Thermal treatment was a positive effect,
reducing level of rots.

Participation in the European Forum
for Science, Technology & Innovation
“Transfiere 2013”.
The Tecnova Technological Centre participated for
the 2nd time in the International Forum promoted by
the association RETA. This has been a meeting point
for the supply and demand in R&D+I, gathering to-
gether the most important representatives in Innova-
tion, both at Spanish and European level.
On this occasion, the Head for R&D+I projects, Ms.
Guadalupe López, focused her participation in the
meetings devoted to the Energy and Agro-alimentary
sectors, as well as with a presentation on the Tecnova
R&D+I lines and services.
Attendance to the RETA annual
meeting
Ms. Mª. Carmen Galera attended as manager and
representative of the Tecnova Foundation to the an-
nual meeting of RETA, an association Tecnova is sub-
scribed to. This event took place at the same time
as the European Forum for Science, Technology &
Innovation “Transfiere 2013”, also organised by RETA.
Participation in ‘CIP Eco-innovation
Infoday’, Brussels
Representatives from Tecnova travelled to Brussels
in order to attend an Info Day about “CIP ECOINNO-
VATION”. This call is aimed at supporting innovation
to SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) so that a
product or process is out in the market in a period of
two years after completing the project. Moreover, our
representative could have a personal meeting with

one of the representatives of the evaluation team
within the call, EACI, so as to present some proposals
for R&D+I projects in cooperation with companies of
the agro-industrial sector and concerning the reval-
orisation of farming waste.
Participation in the Networking
of Foundations from Almería with
AFA (Andalusian Association of
Foundations)
Tecnova Technological Centre was the host of an
event organised by the Andalusian Association of
Foundations whose aim was to do some network-
ing and so get to know the work of the different the
foundations existing in the province of Almería. The
purpose was also to be able to establish contacts and
joint synergies resulting in cooperation between them
in the future. The foundations attending to this event
were: “Almería Social y Laboral”, “Amería Siglo XXI”,
“CTAER”, “Almeriense de Tutela”, “Fundación Bahía
Almeriport”, “FAEEM”, “Cajamar”, “Fundación Medi-
terránea” (University of Almería) and, of course, Tec-
nova.

Meeting for raising awareness on
Funding Tools, by CDTI
Tecnova Technological Centre, together with the
Centre for Industrial and Technological Development
(CDTI), worked for raising awareness across compa-
nies with a view to getting them to know the new CDTI
tools for supporting R&D in companies, individually or
in collaboration with other companies. The meeting
was led by Mr. Carlos Franco, CDTI Technician.
Participation in the Sessions for
Qualification of PIDI Network
representatives
Mr. Francisco Ibáñez, Technician in the R&D+I De-
partment of Tecnova, attended the Sessions for Qual-
ification of PIDI Network representatives held in El Es-
corial, Madrid. The purpose was to get to know the
new and future R&D+I strategies, both at national and
European level, which could benefit SMEs in the Aux-
iliary Industry, Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors.
Participation in the Open Doors Days
at UAL (University of Almería) –
Actions for raising awareness and for
project-related knowledge transfer
Tecnova Technological Centre, together with PITA
(Industrial and Technological Park of Almería), partici-
pated in the UAL Open Doors Days with a joint stand.
The idea was to make Tecnova Foundation known,
as well as to promote and give information on the
most relevant projects going on to young University
students. In this sense, students and some business
people visited our stand and showed interest on the

Coordination and control meetings -
“HUMIDEX” project
During 2013, a series of coordination and control
meetings were held between the members of the
partnership of companies participating in the HUMI-
DEX project, with a view to present the different ac-
tivities developed by the companies for coordinating
its implementation. The project is called “HUMIDEX:
Control of the humidity level as a limiting factor for
competitiveness, employability and exporting capaci-
ty in the Andalusian agro-alimentary cluster”. It is led
by the company ‘Novedades Agrícolas’, together with
Agrobío’, ‘Alarcontrol’, ‘Almeriplant’ & ‘Sistemas de
cross-border projects AGROTEC or RETCETEC, as well
as on the employment possibilities offered by Tecno-
va in relation to the companies within the Foundation.

Participation in the POCTEFEX
sessions “Innovation in the agro-
alimentary industry”
Within the Framework of the ‘Aashara’ project, led
by the Andalusian Council of Chambers of Commerce
as part of the POCTEFEX programme, a session took
place in the Chamber of Commerce of Huelva. This
was about innovation in the Agro-alimentary industry.
Tecnova participated in it by presenting its Techno-
logical Centre, activities and projects. In this sense,
the POCTEFEX projects were also of interest, since
Tecnova participate on them, as well as AGROTEC &
RETCETEC. Later on, Tecnova held B2B meetings with
bodies attending the event.
Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture:
Technological Watch Bulletins
These Technological Watch Bulletins (on packaging
and wrapping, greenhouses, farming machinery, wa-
tering, plastics or net mesh) are published as a tech-
nological watch on the situation of the sector in terms
of innovation.

They also present the national and international pat-
ents published during the year 2013 in each of the
aforementioned sectors.
Healthy Tecnova Bulletin
The monthly bulletin ‘Healthy Tecnova’ has managed
to be a success among readers, because it deals with
healthy issues that are diet-related. The idea is to
promote healthy habits and to spread information on
technical and scientific aspects of interest, both for
professional experts and for all sorts of readers feel-
ing curious about different aspects of the agro-ali-
mentary sector or about having a healthy, adequate
& high-quality diet.
The research lines of the Technological Centre are
aimed at carrying out R&D+I projects related to the
areas of Post-harvesting Technology and Packaging,
as well as Horticultural Production Technology.
Below, an outline is presented of the R&D+I projects
carried out by the Technological Centre along these
lines:
Own projects
“Valoriza” project: Diagnosis in
the AIA (Auxiliary Industry of
Agriculture) value chain
This project, led by Tecnova Foundation and with
the participation of Imp Consulting, had the gener-
al purpose of providing technical assistance for car-
rying out diagnostic actions in the value chain of 10
SMEs belonging the AIA, Post-harvesting and Pack-
aging sectors. By means of it, it would be possible
to realise of the existing opportunities for improving
their productivity and competitiveness. This project
had the financial support of the Regional Department
for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment
of the Andalusian Regional Government, and was
co-funded by ERDF.

Systems
This ambitious project started in 2009 with funding
from the Andalusian Department for Economy, In-
novation, Science and Employment of the Regional
Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by ERDF.

Si las propiedades de la lechuga no inclinaron la balanza de las preferencias hasta la
fecha, ciertos valores atribuidos a la insulsa hoja verde podrían generar un cambio en
nuestra dieta. Resulta que algunos pueblos de la antigüedad le atribuyen al vegetal la
capacidad de incentivar el apetito sexual, los egipcios creían que la lechuga era la clave
para volverse víctima de la pasión y la lujuria, según informa la revista Smithsonian.
Bajo el título “Cuando la lechuga era un símbolo sexual sagrado”, el artículo de la
publicación estadounidense sobre ciencia, naturaleza e historia, explica que en el Egipto
antiguo, el vegetal se puso de moda como un eficiente método para aumentar la libido.
Se creía que sus hojas verdes podían ayudar a realizar el acto sexual sin descanso y
alcanzar un estado divino. Salima Ikram, profesora de egiptología en la Universidad
Americana de El Cairo, sostiene que la conversión de la lechuga en símbolo del sexo pudo
tener que ver, fundamentalmente, con la forma en que crece: recta y alta.
El dato es que también los griegos y los romanos opinaron sobre el tema. Ambos pueblos
afirmaban que la lechuga era la clave para dormir como un bebé y que era causante de
impotencia en los hombres. A las pruebas habrá que remitirse.

 Las empresas del sector hortofrutícola apoyan el trabajo de
Tecnova para 2014. Más del 75% de los ingresos previstos para 2014, serán
ingresos privados provenientes de empresas nacionales del sector hortofrutícola.
 El Centro Tecnológico establece acuerdos de colaboración con
centros de I+D+i en México para promover la transferencia de
tecnología y conocimiento almeriense. Tecnova busca nuevas
oportunidades de negocio en una de las regiones agrícolas de México que más
demanda alta tecnología.

is considered a milestone for the Foundation and for
the companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Ag-
riculture. There was also funding from the General
Secretariat of Universities, Research and Technology
of the Regional Government of Andalusia. The lat-
ter was channelled through the project for provision
of equipment to the Technological Centre of the AIA
and has made it possible to build a commercial and
technological showcase on greenhouse crops man-
agement.
This project is aimed at improving, by means of re-
search, intensive agriculture in greenhouses. This is to
be done via innovation in farm energy management,
design and planning of production & facilities, input
management and valorisation of intensive farming
waste.
The Town Hall of Viator (province of Almería) has lent
us 12h of land for research purposes. Thanks to this,
and in cooperation with companies within the sec-
tor, work was under way for building an experimental
centre in which to carry out research for the project,
as well as providing a world-wide showcase for hor-
ticultural technology from Almería.
During 2013, Tecnova Foundation finished imple-
menting and evaluating the technological develop-
ment of this project in the centre.
The greenhouse called ‘SOLNOVA’ incorporates pho-
tovoltaic panels on the east side of its surface. Also,
on the south-east of the same plot of land, there is
an aero-generator providing enough energy, together
with the panels, to meet the consumption demands
generated by the automatic devices providing energy
to the said greenhouse. Its design offers improve-
ments in solar capture, increasing productivity, as well
as the possibility of interplanting cultivation.Also, a
machine separating raffia from greenhouse waste has
been developed for this project. The said technolo-
gy has the purpose of minimising waste coming from

greenhouses and to manage it in a way that it can be
reused for the development of new products.In con-
nection with the project, an Experimental Centre for
carrying out trials with an international perspective
is under way, as a meeting place for technology and
business that will meet with the current demands of
intensive farming via R&D+I.

Project: “360º Energy Efficiency in
the Sector”
This project, started by Tecnova Foundation & in
collaboration with the company ‘Effergy’, has been
funded by the Regional Department of Economy, In-
novation, Science and Employment of the Regional
Government of Andalusia through IDEA Agency, and
has also been co-funded by ERDF funds.
The purpose of the project is to design a Plan for
Environmental Improvement which will contain gen-
eral recommendations for energy saving, so that con-
sumption in productive processes is optimized. It also
deals with the guidelines to follow for the introduction
of renewable energies, thus reducing the environ-
mental impact produced by activities developed by
the companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Agri-
culture and by farmers of Almería.
Advanced Centre for the
development of robotic and
artificial vision systems in specific
applications within the horticultural
and agro-industrial sectors
This Advanced Centre is framed within the pilot plant
devoted to agro-alimentary robotics. It is located in
the Tecnova headquarters at the Technological Park
of Almería (PITA), whose purpose is to bring autom-
atisation, robotics and artificial vision closer to com-
panies within the agro-industrial and horticulture

sectors, with a view to promote and develop singular
projects.
The plant includes three multi-purpose robotic cells
within an area of 150 m2 with a view to meet with the
ongoing and increasing demand for improvement and
competitiveness modernisation in companies.
Start of the Plastic Lab
Tecnova, at the request of the sector, has created
a new lab which is at the disposal of farmers, plas-
tic-producing companies, produce exchanges, and
marketing & horticulture companies. This new lab is
aimed at assessing the optical and mechanic prop-
erties, as well as the lifespan, of plastic films used as
cover and for padding purposes in greenhouses.
The objective is to offer a service for analysing the
plastic film of greenhouse covers and the ther-
mo-plastic films to be used in agriculture, following
UNE-EN 13206 & 13655 regulations, respectively.
Project: “Tecnova Tecnological
Centre Communication Network”
The idea is that the building of the Technological
Centre is provided with all necessary networks so as
to develop its research activity, according to legisla-
tion in force and to regional requirements, and having
planned each of these networks with a future idea in
mind as to the use of a building like this as a whole.
Due to the research character of the centre, special
care has been taken as to the installation of network
and data, which will allow for the interconnection
of all computing equipment in the building between
them, as well as to Internet services.
Project for providing equipment to
the Technological Centre for the
Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture
The purpose of the present project is to be able to
acquire all necessary infrastructures for being able
to meet with the demands and needs of companies
within the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture in terms
of laboratories and equipments associated to the de-
sign and optimisation of products and processes. The
project has been funded by the General Secretariat of
Universities, Research and Technology of the Regional

The objectives are the provision of advanced servic-
es by the Technological Centre in a centralised way,
becoming a referent nation-wide in research and
development in the field of the Auxiliary Industry for
Agriculture.
Within this project, the enlargement of equipment
also took place for: the Experimental Centre of Tec-
nova, as well as the Plastic & Entomology Labs of
Tecnova.

Project: “Agro-industrial improvement
via Technological transfer between
Almería & the North-Eastern region
of Morocco – AGROTEC”
This project was led by Tecnova Foundation, with the
collaboration of the Chamber for Commerce of the
province and the University of Almería. It was sup-
ported by funds from the Ministry for Innovation and
Competiveness of Spain, as well as by ERDF funds
within the POCTEFEX programme. The purpose of it
was to boost permanent technological transfer and to
make it possible to create new niche markets among
companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture

in Almería. This was carried out by means of the im-
plementation of a pilot experience of innovative and
transferable character for demonstrative purposes.
The final aim was that an increase in technological
demand takes place in terms of technology made in
and commercialised by companies from Almería.
Project: “Cross-border cooperation
between Technological
Centres for business
revitalisation in
Andalusia & Morocco –
RETCETEC”
This project is supported by funds
from the Spanish Ministry for
Economy and Competitiveness,

The Tecnova departments par-
ticipating on it are the areas for
Post-harvesting Technology and
Packaging. And it is led by IDEA
Agency as main beneficiary, to-

The initiative aims at contributing to the economical
and social development of the regions of Andalusia
and North of Morocco, supporting cooperation ini-
tiatives between Technological Centres. The actions
Tecnova was in charge of are as follows:
-Study of the cultivation state of aromatic plants and
of essential oils production, in order to facilitate the
study and design of alternative cleaning products us-
ing aromatic plants, adding value to these.
-Application of certain essential oils to horticultural
products which are freshly minimally processed (IV
Gama) as cleaners and preservatives.
Project: “Reducing mineral fertilizers
and agro-chemicals by recycling
treated organic waste as compost
and bio-char products”
This project is framed within the cooperation pro-
gramme of the VII Framework Programme, call:
FP7-KBBE-2011-5.
The general objective of the project is to identify and
develop strategies and technologies to reduce and
substitute the application of fertilizers & agro-chemi-
cals and to motivate the sector so that it implements
waste plants.
Tecnova TC collaborates with the project as mem-
ber of a partnership led by the SME ‘Stichting Dienst

Project: “Lactic Acid bacteria and
other antagonist microorganisms
as bio-preservatives in freshly
minimally processed products, or
‘BIOSAFOOD’”
This European project is led by DOMCA, with the par-
ticipation of Tecnova Foundation, University of Gra-
nada, the company ‘MKS’, and the Institute for Food
Science and Technology of Kemerovo (Russia). The
purpose is to develop bio-preservatives for applying
them to horticultural products which are freshly min-
imally processed (IV Gama) in order to enlarge their
lifespan in this way. The initiative is expected to finish
in 2015. It is funded by the Regional Department for
Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment, as
well as by ERDF, within Call 2012, EUROTRANSBIO,
ERA-NET of the 7th Framework Programme.

This Association started in July 2009 with a view to
promote joint actions from a group of businesses

The objective of this project managed by ACAL, with
the collaboration of Tecnova, is to study the techni-

mango, with a view to revitalise national horticultural
production that is freshly minimally processed. The
initiative is funded by the Ministry for Industry, Energy
and Tourism, and co-funded by ERDF funds.
Project: “Feasibility study about the
production of native species from the
province of Almería under greenhouse
conditions”
This initiative, started by the Association for the com-
petitive improvement of the Agro-industrial cluster, or
ACAL, has the purpose of studying, from a technical
perspective, the identification of aromatic vegetable
species which are part of the native flora of the prov-
ince of Almería. The idea is for them to be cultivated
under greenhouses, with the final purpose of using
that vegetable material to develop new products for
the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture. The project is
funded by the Ministry for Industry, Energy and Tour-
ism, and co-funded by ERDF funds.

Agro-alimentary cluster - HUMIDEX”
“HUMIDEX: Control of the humidity level as a limiting
factor for competitiveness, employability and exporting
capacity in the Andalusian agro-alimentary cluster” is a
project led by the company ‘Novedades Agrícolas’, to-
gether with ‘Agrobío’, ‘Alarcontrol’, ‘Almeriplant’ and
‘Sistemas de Calor’, all of them belonging to the Auxil-
iary Industry sector, and in which Tecnova Technologi-
cal Centre & University of Almería participate. This pro-
ject has been funded by the Ministry for Economy and

This project is in the process of being entirely imple-
mented in Andalusia, over a period of three years and
involving an investment of 5 million euros for com-
panies. By means of this project, a new concept of
greenhouse and technological equipment have been
developed, aiming at the production of vegetables
continuously throughout the year, through an optimi-
zation of production resources.
Among the objectives of the project, we can mention
the design of a greenhouse structure which can host
and optimize all technologies having to do with the
production, quality, and sanitary state of the plants, as
well as with good farming practices and with lessening
the environmental impact, with a view to be nearer the
sort of ideal greenhouse set in a warm climate.
Project: “Remote control of
horticultural production in
greenhouses and integration with
demand foresight and marketing
systems”
This initiative is led by the company ‘Hispatec’, to-
gether with ‘Nazaries IT’, ‘Proyecta Ingenio’ and
‘Parquenat’, and with the participation of Tecnova.
Its purpose is to create a system for the automat-
ic control of agronomical parameters in horticultur-
al production (tomato and watermelon) with a view
to design a predictive calculus model of production.
This model will be related to a model for calculating
commercialisation demands according to market de-
mands calculation. This project is supported by funds
from the Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness,
within the ERDF-INNTERCONECTA call, via IDEA
Agency and CDTI.

Project: “Preservation of highly
perishable food products via active
packaging incorporating natural
compounds from the olive oil
industry (ACTIVEOLIVE)”
ACTIVEOLIVE has the purpose of adding value to ol-
ive oil industry surpluses, extracting high value added
compounds to be applied to preservation technolo-
gies allowing for the improvement of the lifespan of
highly perishable products, such as fishing and horti-
cultural ones.
The companies participating in the project are: ‘Ol-
ivar de Segura’, ‘Abelló Linde’, ‘Esteros de Canela’,
‘Bandesur’, ‘Plastienvase’ & ‘Miguel García Sánchez
e Hijos’, S.A. This initiative is framed within the
ERDF-INNTERCONECTA call, and funded by the
Spanish Ministry for Economy & Competitiveness, via

Project: Improvement of Agro-
alimentary quality and safety
by means of the technification
of harvesting processes, or
AGROBIOTEC”
The companies ‘Capital Genetic EBT’ S.L., ‘Única
Group’ S.C.A. and ‘Industrial Aeronáuticas INASOR’
S.L.U. have come together to develop this project.
The activities to be developed are: new varieties of
melon, a software to establish nutritional and organo-
leptic parameters of such varieties, an automatic han-
dling line for online assessment, and the calibration
algorithms of such a handling line. The project will last
for two years, and aims at improving food quality and
safety via new technologies applied to Post-harvest-
ing. The initiative is supported by funds from the Re-
gional Department of Economy, Innovation, Science
and Employment, and co-funded by ERDF funds.
Project: “Ripening techniques for
improving commercialization of
custard apple”
This initiative is developed by the entity ‘Mercomo-
tril’ S.A., with the participation of Tecnova, and aims at
improving the period of preservation, storing and com-
mercialisation of custard apples, thus improving the
quality of this fruit. The project is supported by funds
from the Regional Department for Economy, Innova-
tion, Science and Employment of the Regional Gov-

Project: “Design and development of
equipment for pepper shrinking”
This project is managed by ‘Aldeílla Suministros In-
dustriales S.L.’ and has the purpose of designing and
developing a new model of machine devoted to pep-
per retractilado, so that present technologies are im-
proved. The project is being carried out in the Engi-
neering Department of TECNOVA Centre. Equipment
is being developed so that systems providing notice-
able energy savings are created, while perfectioning
current shrinking systems. This project is supported
by funds from the Regional Department for Economy,
Innovation, Science and Employment of the Region-
al Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by ERDF
funds.
Project: “Design and development of
a robotic system for cutting stalks of
avocado”
The project is presented by the company ‘Miguel
García Sánchez e Hijos’ S.A., in collaboration with
Tecnova, and aims at developing a robotic system
with artificial vision which is able to detect the au-
tomatic position of advocado and then slice the re-
maining stalk, thus guaranteeing an adequate han-
dling of the fruit with no loss for quality.

Project: “Development of
environmental-friendly strategies
in order to reduce rottenness and
damage by cold in ecological tomato
and pepper”
This project is managed by the company PROCAM
and consists in lengthening the commercial life of to-
mato and pepper coming from ecological farming by
means of preservation strategies based on physical
and non-chemical treatments that are environmen-
tal-friendly and respectful with an ecological system of
production. This will allow for both a longer commer-
cialisation period and a longer lifespan of products at
selling points. The project is supported by funds from

Project: Varietal flair and freshly
minimally process in aubergines”
This project deals with technological development
and was developed by the company ‘Caparrós Nature’
S.L. By means of it, it has been possible to produce
freshly minimally processed aubergine while avoiding
the problems of browning commonly difficulting its
commercialization. The project is supported by funds

Project: “Development of technology
for application of ULR (Ultra-Low
flow Rate irrigation) watering”
This project is presented by the company ‘PRIMA-RAM’
S.A. and has the general purpose of developing an hy-
draulic prototype allowing for the application of an ir-
rigation dose that could reach drip flows between 100
and 400 ml/ h, as well as the necessary automatization
for carrying out irrigation for one or two minutes up
to 200 times per day. The technical team of Tecnova
Foundation has participated in the development of this
project. The project is supported by funds from the Re-

and Employment of the Regional Government of An-

Project: “Design and development
of a singular terminal element
associated to an anthropomorphic
robot able to introduce peppers
inside boxes with little tops”
This project is presented by the company ‘Miguel
García Sánchez e hijos’ S.A., in collaboration with
Tecnova. It has the purpose of creating a final device
that is able to pick up peppers and introduce them
into boxes with little tops, in a single-cycle operation.

Project: “Design and development
of an automatic system for fitting
avocados”
The aim of this project, presented by the company
‘Miguel García Sánchez e hijos’ S.A., in collaboration
with Tecnova, consists in the development of an au-
tomatic device for fitting avocado in specific packag-
ing while guaranteeing an adequate handling of the
fruit and no loss for quality. By means of this system,
the quality of the fruit is maintained and its lifespan is
not reduced.

Project: “New long-life cover.
Optimisation of productive
structures for competitiveness
and internationalisation of the AIA
sector”
The project, presented by the company SOTRAFA
S.A., with the collaboration of Tecnova, has the pur-
pose of improving the properties of the present films
installed as covers, which do not last for more than
36 months and are not resistant to extreme weather
conditions. Because of this, SOTRAFA S.A. is going to
develop a new film that is more resistant and provides
a better solution to the problems caused by current
covers in multi-tunnel greenhouse structures. The
project is supported by funds from the Regional De-
partment for Economy, Innovation, Science and Em-
ployment of the Regional Government of Andalusia,

Project: “Development and
implementation of techniques for
massive breeding of ‘Aphidius
Colemani’ for production in a bio-
factory in Almería”
The project, led by the company ‘Bgreen Biolog-
ical Systems’ S.L., with the participation of Tecno-
va, has the purpose of getting the process ready for
the massive bio-production of ‘Aphibius Colemani’,
an auxiliary insect, in bio-factories in Almería. Tec-
nova researchers will be responsible of the lab trials
in this project. These will be done using cultivation
chambers and partly in the field trials taking place at
the Experimental Centre. The project is supported by
funds from the Regional Department for Economy,
Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional
Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by Europe-
an Regional Development Funds.
Project: “Design of an integrated
system: Screen, false ceiling and
technical floor”
The project is led by the company ‘Torresa Proyectos
& Ingeniería’ S.L. and has the purpose of designing
and developing an innovative integrated system con-
sisting of an office screen, a false metallic ceiling and
a registrable floor with homogeneous finishing. The
project is supported by funds from the Regional De-
partment for Economy, Innovation, Science and Em-
ployment of the Regional Government of Andalusia,
and co-funded by European Regional Development
Funds.
Project: “Stapler and staples for
fixation in NGS system”
This project, presented by the company ‘New Grow-
ing Systems’ S.L. (NGS), had the purpose of develop-
ing a stapler that is able to set the clips fixing the mul-
ti-bands of crops in the NGS system in an efficient way
for the support of the metallic structure over which it
stands, as well as for an adequate functioning of the
system. The Tecnova Technical and Research team
has participated in this project. The project has been
supported by funds from the Regional Department for
Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of
the Regional Government of Andalusia, and co-fund-

Project: “Biological control against
plagues and effects of the varieties
cultivated under greenhouses”
The project is led by the company ‘Enza Zaden’ Re-
search Centre S.L.U. and has the objective of evalu-
ating the effect of the main commercial varieties of

tomato that the company has currently in the market
on the establishment and effectiveness in the control
of populations of plague insects carried out by aux-
iliary insects. Tecnova researchers are going to car-
ry out the lab trials partly in the field and also using
its cultivation chambers. The project is supported by

Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional
Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by Europe-
an Regional Development Funds.
Project: “Automatization of
packaging lines of cucumber, pepper
and Galia melon”
The purpose of this project led by the company
‘Construcciones Mecánicas Emilio Gea’ has been the
development of an automatic packaging system by
means of the design of a handling device with com-
puter-based vision for elongated vegetables, special-
ly cucumbers, peppers and melons. This, together
with a final packaging robot, integrated on the line,
and via the innovative design of a grasping system,
has been able to pick up products and put them into
its packages automatically. These products have been
the selected ones because they share a calibration
machine in almost all horticultural handling plants,
but their harvesting periods are different, so that the
innovation is more versatile. The project has been
supported by funds from the Regional Department
for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of
the Regional Government of Andalusia, and co-fund-
ed by European Regional Development Funds.
Project: “Aquapony with NGS
System: breeding of tench and near
integration with breeding of micro-
algae”
This project, led by the company ‘New Growing Sys-
tems’, with the participation of Tecnova Foundation
as well, has the general purpose of combining three
productive systems, such as Hydroponic cultivation
in NGS system and Aquaculture, via the aquaponic
technique and incorporating as innovations an im-
provement in the quality of water flowing back, via
another system of water treatment, and from the
production of micro-algae and the breeding of na-
tional water-dwelling species such as tench.
Project: “Development and
improvement of production and
preservation processes in freshly
minimally processed mango”
This project has been presented by the company
‘Miguel García Sánchez e Hijos’ S.A., with the col-
laboration of technicians and researchers from Tec-
nova, with a view to develop a complete protocol for
the production of freshly minimally processed mango.
This process will cover all stages, from the reception of
fruits to quality control of the packaging, including the
stages of product cutting and micro-biological quality
assurance. The project has been supported by funds

for greenhouses”
The project is presented by the company ‘HIMAR-
CAN’ Water and Climate Technique S.L. and has been
developed with a view to develop an application that

tance. This will involve the coordination of all techno-
logical applications for greenhouses, independently
of its manufacturer. The team of Tecnova will be in
charge of carrying out trials of the system in the field,
in order to analyse and validate the adequate work-

The present project, led by the company ‘Agrar’
Southern Plants S.A., has the purpose of developing
a pH regulator for nutritious solutions used in horti-
culture that, not only regulates the solution pH, but
also contains a biodegradable substance formulated
from vegetable oils coming from domestic and cater-
ing waste and with anti-froth properties, capable of
reducing the superficial tension of the solution. The
project has been supported by funds from the De-
partment of Economy, Innovation, Science and Em-
ployment of the Regional Government of Andalusia,
and co-funded by ERDF funds.
Project: “Development of equipment
for cutting melon and watermelon
hygienically in retail businesses –
INFRUCUT”
In this project, the company ‘Induser Poniente’ aims
at developing machinery for retail businesses with
which to clean, cut and wrap melon and watermelon
fruit portions. The project is supported by funds from
the Department of Economy, Innovation, Science and
Employment of the Regional Government of Andalu-
sia, and co-funded by ERDF funds.

‘Innovation Cheque’
The ‘Innovation Cheque’ is a funding tool of the Re-
gional Department for Economy, Innovation and Sci-
ence, targeting Andalusian SMEs & micro-SMEs. It is
part of the Programme: ‘Incentives for the Promotion
of Innovation and Business Development 2008-2013’.
The purpose of the ‘Innovation Cheque’ is to provide
specialized consulting services allowing Andalusian
businesses to improve their productive processes,
to hire assistance to develop or manufacture a new
product, to use e-Commerce, to get advice for im-
proving activities, or to design a commercial plan or
marketing strategy.
Throughout 2013, Tecnova Foundation has provided
consulting services to the following companies: ‘Ag-
rolaboratorios Nutricionales’, ‘Agroindustrial Kimitec’,
‘Bionutrición Vegetal’, ‘Econatur’ Labs, ‘Hortalan Med’,
‘Ispemar SCA’, & ‘Torresa’ Projects + Engineering.

The objective of this programme is to boost an inno-
vation-based culture among small and middle-sized
companies located in the regions considered as ‘Ob-

jective 1’. Such programme consists in two stages:
‘Individual diagnosis & ‘Innovation support plan’. In
the first one, a diagnosis is done by a specialized
mentor working for the Chambers for Commerce al-
lowing to identify possible actions for improvement
via innovation. In the second one, TECNOVA provides
advice to companies as to the development and im-
plementation of these innovation-related recommen-
dations previously identified.

Throughout 2013, Tecnova TC has collaborated with
more than 100 companies, offering advice on inno-
vation management and participating in some of the
stages of the several R&D+I projects developed by
them.
Tecnova as a local agent of the PIDI
network, CDTI:
This initiative started in 2006 by the CDTI (Centre for
Industrial and Technological Development), in collab-
oration with the General Directorate for SMEs and
under the coordination of the OEP: Economy Office
of the Presidency of the Government. TECNOVA TC
is considered a local agent within the PIDI network (a
Network of Info Points on R&D+I) and offers compa-
nies three specialized agents, acting in coordination
and under the supervision of the CDTI.
This PIDI network has the purpose of offering free in-
formation and counselling services to companies and
entrepreneurs. These services are to do with public
funds from all administrative sectors (local, region-
al, national and European) that can better suit their
needs. In this way, the idea is to boost private in-
vestment in R&D+I, making it easier for companies to
access the funding sources.

8. Training
The training actions for 2013 were focused on meeting
the needs of a competitive sector and, with it, impro-
ving even further the qualification of the companies.
For this purpose, an annual training programme is de-
signed including training sessions or seminars. They
included participation by gurus and a technical type of
training focused on the strategic lines of the Founda-
tion & aimed at directors, managers and middle ma-
nagers, as well as technical staff of companies.

Workshop: “Negotiation and Conflict
Management”
(21st of March, 2013)
Within the programme involving striking gurus, Tec-
nova Foundation had the pleasure of the participation
of Mr. Juan Mateo, a high level speaker. He led a tra-
ining workshop on Negotiation and Conflict Manage-
ment which was aimed at businesspeople, Head of
Departments, Human Resources personnel, etc. The
idea was to provide attendants with a more practical
and interactive perspective on negotiation techniques
and how to face them.
Beginners Course: “Introduction to
Wine Culture - Learning about Enology”
(12th & 13th of April, 2013)
As part of the Tecnova area ‘Sensory Analysis’, and
for promoting our job, a course was organised which
was taught by the renowned enologist Ms. Cristina
Calvache. She explained, in a very practical way and
in the form of a workshop, the basics of wine tas-
ting and also introduced us to wine culture. The idea
was that the attendants could enjoy in an entertaining
way learning about the principles of sensorial analysis
applied to Enology. As a plenary to the course, and to
put into practice what was learned, a group meal was
actually organized at the facilities of Tecnova.

Presentation: “7 reasons why not
being digital is a mistake”
(25th April, 2013)
The objective of this presentation, performed by Mr.
Juan Pablo Seijo, consultant specialized in new tech-
nologies, was to teach about the advantages of the
technical age, such as why we should get into this
world for not being outdated in the new digital age.
The presentation was performed by Mr. Emilio Martí-
nez, President of Tecnova.
Presentation: “Create, Believe &
Achieve”
(19th of June, 2013)
A high-level conference took place, with the partici-
pation of Mr. Álex Rovira. It was framed within the 7th
Meeting of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture and
was held previous to a formal dinner. Mr. Rovira is an
economist, writer and consultant who presented, for
more than an hour, a presentation entitled “Create,
Believe & Achieve” - on entrepreneurship, talent, op-
timism and personal & professional success.

Mr. Emilio Martínez, President of Tecnova, presen-
ted the speaker and introduced his presentation. The
event took place in a unique location: the cultural
assembly-hall of the Cajamar bluiding known as the
‘Butterflies’ building, located in the very centre of Al-
mería.
The conference was sponsored by the savings bank
Cajamar, and dealt with the keys for success through
effort, belief and talent to cope with projects, in order
to make the impossible possible. The speaker talked
about the importance of positivism as a way to pro-
mote development, by means of inspiration, creativity
and the hope for believing in creating and achieving
personal and professional fulfilment.
Healthy fast food: “Easy, useful and
practical cooking techniques”
(6th of November, 2013)
This Cookery workshop was framed within the actions
planned as part of the collaboration agreement be-
tween the Association of cooks and pastry cooks of
Almería (ACRIA) & Tecnova Foundation.
More specifically, this training action, led by Mr. José
Torrente, Chef at ‘Hotel Catedral’ Restaurant & Tea-
cher at the ‘Hotel and Catering School of Almería’,
was aimed at offering efficient and fast techniques for
cooking fast food using healthy products such as the
horticultural ones from Almería.
These training courses would like to promote the be-
nefits and advantages of Gastronomy made using lo-
cal products from Almería.

The course was organised in two sessions (3rd and
4th of December), due to the great success of it in
terms of participation. The course was taught by Chef
Mr. Antonio Gázquez, from ‘Las Eras’ Restaurant. It
was open to anybody who could be interested in lear-
ning more about food and cooking through gastrono-
mic research.

Presentation: “The art of presenting”
(13th of March, 2013)
This session has been the first of the ones planned
within a framework for collaboration between the
Economists Association and Tecnova Foundation.
It was presented by Ms. Carmen Galera, Manager of
Tecnova, and Mr. Javier López, representative of the
Managing and Training Board of the Economists As-
sociation.
The training action was led by Mr. Gonzalo Álvarez
Marañón, Telecommuncations and Computing Engi-
neer, with a view to help professionals to plan their
presentations while bearing in mind several aspects
such as: their audience, assigned time, spoken ex-
pression and communication, how to stress the con-
tents, etc.

Informative session: “Ecological
Production, Methodology for
implementation and certification
in accordance with European
Regulation (CE) 834/2007”
(3rd of April, 2013)
This informative session, promoted by ‘Imp Consul-
tores’ & ‘Bureau Veritas’, both of them belonging to
the Foundation, had the purpose of giving information
about European rules and regulations in relation to
Ecological Production and with a view to its imple-
mentation and certification.
Session: “Mastery of emotions and
self-leadership for success”
(5th of April, 2013)
This session was held at the Tecnova headquarters
and was managed by the Economists Association of
Almería, in front of more than 100 people. Ms. Móni-
ca Esgueva was the one who taught this workshop on
emotions. She presented on the keys to being effi-
cient with success by means of self-control, stress
control, and being happier with one self.
Technical Session on: “Advances on
soilless cultivation”
(29th of April, 2013)
Tecnova, in collaboration with University of Almería,
organised this technical session, framed within the
PhD Programme in Protected Agriculture of the De-
partment of Agricultural Studies.
The purpose of such session was to provide informa-
tion on the innovations in systems for soilless cultiva-
tion by means of new tools for optimizing the profita-
bility and sustainability of production.
In this session, there were the following participants:
Dr. Heiner Lieth, Professor at the University of Da-
vies, California (USA); Dr. José Miguel Guzmán, UAL;
Mr. José Fuentes Rubio, Technician at ‘New Growing

Seminar: “Productivity and Personal
Management”
(23rd of May, 2013)
This seminar, led by Mr. Alberto Pena (writer, blogger,
speaker and coach in Productivity and Personal Ma-
nagement), together with the Economists Association
of Almería, had the purpose, among others, of lear-
ning about the foundations and routines in terms of
Personal Management, and so being able to improve
communication and team work techniques by means
of new tools and organisational routines.

Technical Session on: “Efficiency in
Fertirrigation”
(3rd of June, 2013)
Tecnova, in collaboration with the University of Al-
mería, organised this technical session, framed within
the PhD Programme in Protected Agriculture of the
Department of Agricultural Studies.
The objective of this session, aimed at horticultu-
ral businessmen, farming and agronomical technical
engineers, as well as students in this field, was to
learn about innovations in the field of fertirrigation by
means of new tools optimizing sustainability in inten-
sive farming. In this session, there were the following
participants: Technicians from the companies ‘Viagro’
& ‘Himarcan’, both belonging to Tecnova; Dr. José
Miguel Guzmán, UAL; Dr. Raúl Cabrera, Professor at
Texas A&M AgriLife Research; & Mr. Eduardo Pardo,
Agronomical Engineer at Tecnova Foundation.
Session on: “How to design and
implement a incentive-based system
in accordance with productivity”
(6th of June, 2013)
The session was presented by Ms. Carmen Galera,
Manager of Tecnova, and had the participation of Mr.
Antonio Mayor, Partner and Director of ‘Imp Consul-
ting’; Mr. Ignacio Clemente, Consulting Manager at
‘Imp Consulting’; as well as the collaboration of Ms.
Mª Ángeles Rodríguez, Technical Advisor at IDEA
Agency in Almería. This session had the purpose of
showing the importance of planning an incentive-ba-
sed system applied to work productivity. As a final
point for the session, the IDEA Agency Technician
gave a presentation on aid available for implementing
advanced services projects.
Technical Session on: “Biomass -
Solutions applied to Farming”
(14th of November, 2013)
The companies ‘Nova Energía’ & ‘ING Tecnoindustrial’,
in collaboration with Tecnova, organised this technical
session, whose objective was learning further about
the different applications and benefits of Biomass in
Agriculture. Biomass can offer solutions in terms of
Energy Efficiency that are both reliable and profita-
ble - for using them in greenhouses, agro-alimentary
industries, wine cellars, drying rooms and other Agri-
culture-related services. This session was attended by
more than 50 professionals from the sector.

Workshop: “Stress Control”
(12th of December, 2013)
The workshop was organised by the Economists As-
sociation of Almería at the Tecnova Headquarters,
and was taught by Ms. Amparo Casares, graduated
in Psychology and PhD student in Neurophysiology at
the University of Bristol (UK).
The objective of the workshop was the promotion
of physical and psychological wellbeing by means of
tools allowing us to cope with stress and to ease the
physical symptoms that job and personal pressures
can have on our bodies.

Development of the TECNOVA
Technological Centre
With a view to boost the motivation of personnel at
the Foundation, as well as to revitalise team work spi-
rit, Tecnova Foundation has carried out a complete
programme of internal training with the participation
of experts from different business sectors. The idea
was to improve the knowledge of the different wor-
king areas of an organisation, from administration to
commercial and production areas, including the final
consumer.

Infotecnova
Infotecnova bulletins continue with its informative
line towards the local business fabric in relation to
the actions of the Technological Centre. This bulletin
consists in four news about the topics of Promotion,
Information, Internationalization, R&D+i and Training.
In total, twelve bulletins were published during 2013.
TECNOVA TC in Social Networks
Tecnova Foundation is present in social networks,
professional networks and networks of general in-
terest such as: Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and You
Tube. All this with a view to make the public know
about the services, activities, projects and other pro-
motional activities carried out by the Foundation.
Tecnova in the Media
Tecnova TC continues with the implementation of a
communication department to give information on
the actions and services provided for the business
fabric. Its specialized staff centralises all the info on
events, services and activities carried out by Tecnova
and spread it to all those interested in the progress of
the Foundation. In this way, the centre can be present
in the main media (printed press, online press, radio
& TV). These channels incluye, among other: ‘Ideal’

  • 4. 4 Annual Report 2013 Year 2013 has been a special year for Tecnova and for the Agro-Industrial sector which is at the heart of it. One of the most relevant milestones has been the official inauguration of new premises for Tecnova headquarters – a building that we own and which hosts technological and research spaces at the ser- vice of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture, the Post-harvesting and the Packaging sectors. It was built thanks to both the funding and the support of the Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, to- gether with the Department for Innovation of the Regional Government of Andalusia. The building is located at a key place such as PITA – the Technolog- ical Park of Almería. After a lot of effort and hard-work, something that used to be a project is now a reality, a reality to be able to provide quick solutions to the sector, thus becoming a meeting point for their companies. This is thanks to Tecnova’s pilot plants and labs, adapted to current needs in the field of the Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors, as well as to horticultural production technology - for offering real-life and practical solution to organizations in the Agro-In- dustrial sector. In this sense, and regarding infrastructures, we could also mention our 2nd site, known as Experimental Centre, and located near the village of Viator. But it will be dealt more in detail in the Report of 2014, since it was inaugurated this very year, in April 2014. With these two sites and the guarantee of 12 years 1. Letter by the President
  • 5. Annual Report 2013 of experience, Tecnova has managed to create a business model adapted to the needs of companies, oriented to them, and focused on obtaining resour- ces. Actually, we have managed to reach a turnover of 2 million Euros in 2013, with a 71% of private fun- ding and a 29% of public one. It is because of this that I would like to stress the va- lue of the work carried out with the entities that are part of the Agro-Industrial cluster, the Marketing, Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors. In this way, we have showed our value for certainly strengthen agriculture and food & nutritional safety: working in new lines of interest for the sector, working adapting ourselves to sectors need in advance, and setting quality and customer satisfaction (an increasingly demanding one each day) as our main objectives. With this idea in mind, in June this year, we achie- ved one of our goals – to be considered as Support Centre for Technological Innovation at national level by the Spanish Ministry for Economy & Competi- tiveness. This means setting Tecnova as a model Technological Centre for organisations all around Spain when it comes to research. In relation to this, collaboration agreements and contracts have been signed with public and private bodies in order to promote joint actions for the de- velopment of the sector, with a clear aim – to get our efforts together to be side by side with compa- nies to boost R&D-i, or to help the sector in adap- ting itself to new market needs. This can be done by means of internationalisation and inter-business cooperation, thus making it possible to create jobs and also richness for the province of Almería. We must not forget that all of this would not have been possible if it was not for the whole team wor- king at the Foundation. In this sense, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff of Tec- nova Foundation, as well as to the governing team (Managing Board, Governing Council and Board members). All of them have given added value to Tecnova, something which no doubt has contribu- ted to enriching and highlighting us as a quality or- ganisation which is at the service of companies. Moreover, I would also like to thank the companies which have joined Tecnova in 2013, among which we could mention: Agrofresh Fruits and Vegetables Exportation, Bio Sabor SAT, Caparrós Nature S.L., Certis Europe S.C.A., Hortimax Growing Solutions S.L., Sertfruit S.A., Azud System S.A. & Única Group S.C.A. Taking this as a starting point, I would like to con- clude my letter bearing in mind an important cha- llenge for the future, which is to continue working for the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture, and for the Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors, with the same drive, effort and positivism that we have ma- naged to keep intact during previous years. Finally, I am convinced that perseverance and in- novation are the keys to help to improve the future and so achieve increased productivity and compe- titiveness. In this sense, I would like to encourage all companies in the sector to be part of a com- mon challenge (Tecnova’s and our own) – to achie- ve the involvement and unity that are necessary to strengthen even further our sector, cooperating to- gether and setting it as one of the most relevant nation-wide.   • 6. 6 Annual Report 2013 The Foundation for Auxiliary Technologies for Agricul- ture (Fundación Tecnova) was born on 9th of January, 2001. It is a non-profit private entity listed in the Re- gistry of Foundations from the Regional Ministry of So- cial Affairs of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia (Spain) since 25th May, 2001, and together with more than 120 companies of the field of the Auxiliary Industry and Services for Agriculture. In March 2007, it was qualified as Technological Centre of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture at Andalusian le- vel by the Regional Ministry for Innovation, Science & Business and in June 2013, it was qualified by the Mi- nistry for Innvation Science & Business as Centre for Support for Technological Innovation at Spain. The MISSION of TECNOVA Technological Centre is to provide an added value, promoting innovation and te- chnological development while favouring business com- petiveness in the agriculture auxiliary industry sector. It works at international level and with the collaboration of all the agents involved in the process. The VISION of this Technological Centre is to be a ben- chmark and a provider of technological knowledge with an international view, regarding techniques to be applied in: agrochemistry, greenhouse construction, climate and environment control, packaging and containers, en- gineering, laboratories, agricultural and handling ma- chinery, plastics, biological production, ferti-irrigation, seeds, seedbeds, cultivation substrate, waste manage- ment & environment. The OPERATIONAL MODEL of TECNOVA Technological Centre is based on strategic working commissions. The- se are integrated by representatives of all implied sub- sectors, for a more optimised and comprehensive view, together with a further specialisation, in accordance with current business fabric. The PURPOSE of TECNOVA Technological Centre is the technological development, promotion and commercia- lisation of the Auxiliary Industry and Services for Agri- culture, by means of innovation, competitiveness and training promotion. For the said purpose, TECNOVA ca- rries out as many main and complementary activities as necessary, especially: a) Carrying out Investigation, Technological Develop- ment and Innovation (R&D+i) activities in areas rela- ted to production, commercialisation & the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture (Agroindustry). b) Promotion of relations between the members of the Foundation, as well as between the Foundation and the several other actors involved in the Science, Te- chnology and Business system. c) Collaboration and cooperation with other national and International bodies and organisations, in order to reach common goals and/or to participate in na- tional and international programmes. d) Provision of assistance and of advanced technologi- cal and engineering services in the mentioned field. e) Carrying out technological surveillance and collabo- rating in the transfer of Research results and Tech- nologies in this field. f) Organisation of training activities, technical con- ferences and sessions for the improvement of the scientific and technical education of citizens. Toge- ther with the organisation of other types of techno- logical events, such as fairs or conferences. g) Promotion and coverage of reports, publications, studies and statistical data, including prospective ones, in relation to the aforementioned sector. h) Carrying out promotion and commercialisation ac- tions for this industry. i) Engagement in any other general activity which could be of interest for the sector. 2. Annual Report 2013 Governing Council The Governing Council is in charge of governing, mana- ging and representing the Foundation, which will meet with its foundational aims while being able to delegate powers to one or more of its members. Competences include sorting out any issues concerning the governing, managing and representation of the Foundation, as well as the interpretation and edition of the Statutes. The first Governing Council meeting of the year was held on the 5th of June, with the following Agenda: report by the President, overview and approval of budget, yearly inventory and accounts, auditing report of 2012, as well as approval of new members and acceptance of their position, among other issues. During this meeting, and event also took place for bi- dding farewell to Mr. Alfredo Sánchez, celebrating his career as 2nd Vice-President of Tecnova on behalf of the Technological Park of Almería. On the 26th of November, a 2nd meeting of the Gover- ning Council took place, in which the following was on the Agenda: approval of Action Plan 2014, overview of applications to join the Foundation (followed by appro- val, if deemed convenient), report by the President, and other issues of interest to the Foundation. 5.   • 24. 24 Annual Report 2013 New services and challenges for the R&D+I Department Thanks to the new Tecnova headquarters, the Tech- nological Centre will be able to offer real servic- es to companies, due to its perfectly prepared and equipped facilities in the area of Post-harvesting and Packaging Technology, as well as Horticultural Pro- duction Technology. Moreover, we can offer a 12h field located in Viator (Almería) as Experimental Centre, which represents a technological showcase for the companies within the Auxiliary Industry. This centre hosts greenhouse struc- tures of several types in which it is possible to carry out agronomical trials with a view to assess products and technologies, or to develop new crops, among other. With these two sites, Tecnova can offer direct servic- es covering all value chain, ranging from production in the fields to post-harvesting, and up to the final con- sumer, thanks to the advice of a specialised working team and to a technology that is tailored to customer needs. Actions for Technological Transfer & R&D+I Office for the Transfer of Research Results (OTRI) The Ministry for Science and Innovation, currently the Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, ac- knowledged the contri- bution of the Tecnova TC in Technological Transfer by means of its registra- tion in the OTRI Register. This acknowledgement is the highest point in the evolution of the Technological Centre in terms of promoting innovation and spread- ing its results in the field of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture. The OTRI is a service offered by Tecnova TC in charge of promoting and managing the relations of the Cen- tre with the world of innovation and with corporate technological development in the field of research. It is also the unit responsible for promoting and spread- ing the results of R&D+I projects carried out by the Foundation to the public, as well as to provide infor- mation on new funding lines for businesses. Participation in the bi-annual International Conference “Biomicroworld” 2013 Tecnova has participated, with the presentation of a research poster, in the prestigious bi-annual Inter- national Conference “Biomicroworld” 2013: “V Inter- national Conference of Environmental, Industrial and Applied Microbiology”, held in the “Universidad Com- plutense”, in Madrid. The report presented was on the results obtained in a research work in which the application of several physical treatments was stud- ied, such as Type-C and thermic ultraviolet radiation to reduce the impact of rottenness and so improve the lifespan of ecological lemons imported across the sea from Chile. 7. Annual Report 2013 Participation in the Forum for Innovation and Technology in the Agro-Alimentary sector “FOOD I&DT” (Lisbon) Tecnova researchers have presented two R&D+I pro- jects to the Forum for Innovation and Technology within the Agro-Alimentary sector known as “FOOD I&DT”, framed within the International Show “Alimen- taria & Horexpo”, held in Lisboa.More specifically, the device presented was one used for dry disinfection using UV-C radiation in fruit and vegetable handling lines, developed by Ingro Machinery, with initial re- search support by Tecnova. This project received the 3rd prize in a competition for innovative projects. The prize was given by the State Secretary for Food and Agro-alimentary Research of Portugal himself - Mr. Nuno Vieira e Brito. The 2nd project dealt with NIR technology for the measurement of Bix degrees in melon and watermelon. MADRID, October 2-4th, 2013 Abstract Conclusions Oficina de Transferencia de Resultados de Investigación Reducing the high incidence of Penicillium digitatum over organic lemon, by using environmentally friendly treatments, based on the use of emergent technology as ultraviolet light combined with thermal treatments. Materials and methods In the present work the incidence of combinations of different doses of UV-C with the use of moderate to high storage temperature before cold storage, on overall quality and shelf life of organic lemon was evaluated. Ultraviolet light in electromagnetic spectrum range between 200-280 nm (type C) has a strong effect against microorganism growth. Summary treatments 1. CT: Control. 2. TT (Thermal treatment): application of 35 ºC during 24 hours previous cold storage. 3. UVm: moderate UVC doses (1kJ/m2). 4. UVh: high UVC dose (4kJ/m2). 5. UVm + TT: 1kJ/m2 + application of 35 ºC for 24 hours previous cold storage. 6. UVh + TT: 4kJ/m2 + application of 35 ºC for 24 hours previous cold storage. Analytical determinations: 1. Evolution of color (CIELab system). 2. Evaluation of incidence of Penicillum. digitatum. 3. Visual appearance. Results  Thermal treatment was a positive effect, reducing level of rots. CT TT UVm UVh  UVC have not a positive effect.  High doses (4 kJ/m2) was even worse treatment compared to moderate doses.  Thermal treatment + high doses (4 kJ/m2) was the best combination. UVm + TT UVh + TT Incidence rots. 21 days shipping + treatments + 4 days at 8 ºC (transport) + 8 days at 20 ºC (commercialization). The Tecnova Technological Centre participated for the 2nd time in the International Forum promoted by the association RETA. This has been a meeting point for the supply and demand in R&D+I, gathering to- gether the most important representatives in Innova- tion, both at Spanish and European level. On this occasion, the Head for R&D+I projects, Ms. Guadalupe López, focused her participation in the meetings devoted to the Energy and Agro-alimentary sectors, as well as with a presentation on the Tecnova R&D+I lines and services. Attendance to the RETA annual meeting Ms. Mª. Carmen Galera attended as manager and representative of the Tecnova Foundation to the an- nual meeting of RETA, an association Tecnova is sub- scribed to. This event took place at the same time as the European Forum for Science, Technology & Innovation “Transfiere 2013”, also organised by RETA. Participation in ‘CIP Eco-innovation Infoday’, Brussels Representatives from Tecnova travelled to Brussels in order to attend an Info Day about “CIP ECOINNO- VATION”. This call is aimed at supporting innovation to SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) so that a product or process is out in the market in a period of two years after completing the project. Participation in the Networking of Foundations from Almería with AFA (Andalusian Association of Foundations) Tecnova Technological Centre was the host of an event organised by the Andalusian Association of Foundations whose aim was to do some network- ing and so get to know the work of the different the foundations existing in the province of Almería. The purpose was also to be able to establish contacts and joint synergies resulting in cooperation between them in the future. The foundations attending to this event were: “Almería Social y Laboral”, “Amería Siglo XXI”, “CTAER”, “Almeriense de Tutela”, “Fundación Bahía Almeriport”, “FAEEM”, “Cajamar”, “Fundación Medi- terránea” (University of Almería) and, of course, Tec- nova. 7.   • 28. 28 Annual Report 2013 Meeting for raising awareness on Funding Tools, by CDTI Tecnova Technological Centre, together with the Centre for Industrial and Technological Development (CDTI), worked for raising awareness across compa- nies with a view to getting them to know the new CDTI tools for supporting R&D in companies, individually or in collaboration with other companies. The meeting was led by Mr. Carlos Franco, CDTI Technician. Participation in the Sessions for Qualification of PIDI Network representatives Mr. Francisco Ibáñez, Technician in the R&D+I De- partment of Tecnova, attended the Sessions for Qual- ification of PIDI Network representatives held in El Es- corial, Madrid. The purpose was to get to know the new and future R&D+I strategies, both at national and European level, which could benefit SMEs in the Aux- iliary Industry, Post-harvesting and Packaging sectors. Participation in the Open Doors Days at UAL (University of Almería) – Actions for raising awareness and for project-related knowledge transfer Tecnova Technological Centre, together with PITA (Industrial and Technological Park of Almería), partici- pated in the UAL Open Doors Days with a joint stand. The idea was to make Tecnova Foundation known, as well as to promote and give information on the most relevant projects going on to young University students. Annual Report 2013 Coordination and control meetings - “HUMIDEX” project During 2013, a series of coordination and control meetings were held between the members of the partnership of companies participating in the HUMI- DEX project, with a view to present the different ac- tivities developed by the companies for coordinating its implementation. The project is called “HUMIDEX: Control of the humidity level as a limiting factor for competitiveness, employability and exporting capaci- ty in the Andalusian agro-alimentary cluster”. It is led by the company ‘Novedades Agrícolas’, together with Agrobío’, ‘Alarcontrol’, ‘Almeriplant’ & ‘Sistemas de cross-border projects AGROTEC or RETCETEC, as well as on the employment possibilities offered by Tecno- va in relation to the companies within the Foundation. 7. Participation in the POCTEFEX sessions “Innovation in the agro- alimentary industry” Within the Framework of the ‘Aashara’ project, led by the Andalusian Council of Chambers of Commerce as part of the POCTEFEX programme, a session took place in the Chamber of Commerce of Huelva. This was about innovation in the Agro-alimentary industry. Tecnova participated in it by presenting its Techno- logical Centre, activities and projects. In this sense, the POCTEFEX projects were also of interest, since Tecnova participate on them, as well as AGROTEC & RETCETEC. Later on, Tecnova held B2B meetings with bodies attending the event. Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture: Technological Watch Bulletins These Technological Watch Bulletins (on packaging and wrapping, greenhouses, farming machinery, wa- tering, plastics or net mesh) are published as a tech- nological watch on the situation of the sector in terms of innovation. 7. Healthy Tecnova Bulletin The monthly bulletin ‘Healthy Tecnova’ has managed to be a success among readers, because it deals with healthy issues that are diet-related. The idea is to promote healthy habits and to spread information on technical and scientific aspects of interest, both for professional experts and for all sorts of readers feel- ing curious about different aspects of the agro-ali- mentary sector or about having a healthy, adequate & high-quality diet. The research lines of the Technological Centre are aimed at carrying out R&D+I projects related to the areas of Post-harvesting Technology and Packaging, as well as Horticultural Production Technology. Below, an outline is presented of the R&D+I projects carried out by the Technological Centre along these lines: Own projects “Valoriza” project: Diagnosis in the AIA (Auxiliary Industry of Agriculture) value chain This project, led by Tecnova Foundation and with the participation of Imp Consulting, had the gener- al purpose of providing technical assistance for car- rying out diagnostic actions in the value chain of 10 SMEs belonging the AIA, Post-harvesting and Pack- aging sectors. By means of it, it would be possible to realise of the existing opportunities for improving their productivity and competitiveness. This project had the financial support of the Regional Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Andalusian Regional Government, and was co-funded by ERDF. Project: Comprehensive Energy Management of Greenhouse Crop Systems This ambitious project started in 2009 with funding from the Andalusian Department for Economy, In- novation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by ERDF. El IX Congreso Internacional Nutrición, Alimentación y Dietética, organizado por SEDCA y SPRIM, tendrá lugar los días 19, 20 y 21 de marzo de 2014 en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Como novedad, este año se abren nuevas categorías de participación con la voluntad de dar cabida tanto a trabajos de investigación como a experiencias educativas en nutrición, entre otros proyectos, que podremos conocer de la mano de sus autores en varias sesiones específicas. Si las propiedades de la lechuga no inclinaron la balanza de las preferencias hasta la fecha, ciertos valores atribuidos a la insulsa hoja verde podrían generar un cambio en nuestra dieta. Resulta que algunos pueblos de la antigüedad le atribuyen al vegetal la capacidad de incentivar el apetito sexual, los egipcios creían que la lechuga era la clave para volverse víctima de la pasión y la lujuria, según informa la revista Smithsonian. Bajo el título “Cuando la lechuga era un símbolo sexual sagrado”, el artículo de la publicación estadounidense sobre ciencia, naturaleza e historia, explica que en el Egipto antiguo, el vegetal se puso de moda como un eficiente método para aumentar la libido. Se creía que sus hojas verdes podían ayudar a realizar el acto sexual sin descanso y alcanzar un estado divino. Salima Ikram, profesora de egiptología en la Universidad Americana de El Cairo, sostiene que la conversión de la lechuga en símbolo del sexo pudo tener que ver, fundamentalmente, con la forma en que crece: recta y alta. El dato es que también los griegos y los romanos opinaron sobre el tema. Ambos pueblos afirmaban que la lechuga era la clave para dormir como un bebé y que era causante de impotencia en los hombres.   • 32. 32 Annual Report 2013 is considered a milestone for the Foundation and for the companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Ag- riculture. There was also funding from the General Secretariat of Universities, Research and Technology of the Regional Government of Andalusia. The lat- ter was channelled through the project for provision of equipment to the Technological Centre of the AIA and has made it possible to build a commercial and technological showcase on greenhouse crops man- agement. This project is aimed at improving, by means of re- search, intensive agriculture in greenhouses. This is to be done via innovation in farm energy management, design and planning of production & facilities, input management and valorisation of intensive farming waste. The Town Hall of Viator (province of Almería) has lent us 12h of land for research purposes. Thanks to this, and in cooperation with companies within the sec- tor, work was under way for building an experimental centre in which to carry out research for the project, as well as providing a world-wide showcase for hor- ticultural technology from Almería. During 2013, Tecnova Foundation finished imple- menting and evaluating the technological develop- ment of this project in the centre. The greenhouse called ‘SOLNOVA’ incorporates pho- tovoltaic panels on the east side of its surface. Also, on the south-east of the same plot of land, there is an aero-generator providing enough energy, together with the panels, to meet the consumption demands generated by the automatic devices providing energy to the said greenhouse. Its design offers improve- ments in solar capture, increasing productivity, as well as the possibility of interplanting cultivation.Also, a machine separating raffia from greenhouse waste has been developed for this project. The said technolo- gy has the purpose of minimising waste coming from 7. R&D+I

Annual Report 2013 greenhouses and to manage it in a way that it can be reused for the development of new products.In con- nection with the project, an Experimental Centre for carrying out trials with an international perspective is under way, as a meeting place for technology and business that will meet with the current demands of intensive farming via R&D+I. Project: “360º Energy Efficiency in the Sector” This project, started by Tecnova Foundation & in collaboration with the company ‘Effergy’, has been funded by the Regional Department of Economy, In- novation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalusia through IDEA Agency, and has also been co-funded by ERDF funds. The purpose of the project is to design a Plan for Environmental Improvement which will contain gen- eral recommendations for energy saving, so that con- sumption in productive processes is optimized. It also deals with the guidelines to follow for the introduction of renewable energies, thus reducing the environ- mental impact produced by activities developed by the companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Agri- culture and by farmers of Almería. Advanced Centre for the development of robotic and artificial vision systems in specific applications within the horticultural and agro-industrial sectors This Advanced Centre is framed within the pilot plant devoted to agro-alimentary robotics. It is located in the Tecnova headquarters at the Technological Park of Almería (PITA), whose purpose is to bring autom- atisation, robotics and artificial vision closer to com- panies within the agro-industrial and horticulture 7.   • 36. 36 Annual Report 2013 sectors, with a view to promote and develop singular projects. The plant includes three multi-purpose robotic cells within an area of 150 m2 with a view to meet with the ongoing and increasing demand for improvement and competitiveness modernisation in companies. Start of the Plastic Lab Tecnova, at the request of the sector, has created a new lab which is at the disposal of farmers, plas- tic-producing companies, produce exchanges, and marketing & horticulture companies. This new lab is aimed at assessing the optical and mechanic prop- erties, as well as the lifespan, of plastic films used as cover and for padding purposes in greenhouses. The objective is to offer a service for analysing the plastic film of greenhouse covers and the ther- mo-plastic films to be used in agriculture, following UNE-EN 13206 & 13655 regulations, respectively. Project: “Tecnova Tecnological Centre Communication Network” The idea is that the building of the Technological Centre is provided with all necessary networks so as to develop its research activity, according to legisla- tion in force and to regional requirements, and having planned each of these networks with a future idea in mind as to the use of a building like this as a whole. Due to the research character of the centre, special care has been taken as to the installation of network and data, which will allow for the interconnection of all computing equipment in the building between them, as well as to Internet services. Project for providing equipment to the Technological Centre for the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture The purpose of the present project is to be able to acquire all necessary infrastructures for being able to meet with the demands and needs of companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture in terms of laboratories and equipments associated to the de- sign and optimisation of products and processes. The objectives are the provision of advanced servic- es by the Technological Centre in a centralised way, becoming a referent nation-wide in research and development in the field of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture. Within this project, the enlargement of equipment also took place for: the Experimental Centre of Tec- nova, as well as the Plastic & Entomology Labs of Tecnova. International Projects Project: “Agro-industrial improvement via Technological transfer between Almería & the North-Eastern region of Morocco – AGROTEC” This project was led by Tecnova Foundation, with the collaboration of the Chamber for Commerce of the province and the University of Almería. It was sup- ported by funds from the Ministry for Innovation and Competiveness of Spain, as well as by ERDF funds within the POCTEFEX programme. The purpose of it was to boost permanent technological transfer and to make it possible to create new niche markets among companies within the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture 7. R&D+I
  • 38. 38 Annual Report 2013 in Almería. This was carried out by means of the im- plementation of a pilot experience of innovative and transferable character for demonstrative purposes. The final aim was that an increase in technological demand takes place in terms of technology made in and commercialised by companies from Almería. Project: “Cross-border cooperation between Technological Centres for business revitalisation in Andalusia & Morocco – RETCETEC” This project is supported by funds from the Spanish Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, as well as by ERDF funds with- in the POCTEFEX programme. The Tecnova departments par- ticipating on it are the areas for Post-harvesting Technology and Packaging. And it is led by IDEA Agency as main beneficiary, to- gether with the following Tech- nological Centres: CTAP, TEICA, CITOLIVA, CTAQUA, CITADESVA & TECNOVA. The initiative aims at contributing to the economical and social development of the regions of Andalusia and North of Morocco, supporting cooperation ini- tiatives between Technological Centres. The actions Tecnova was in charge of are as follows: -Study of the cultivation state of aromatic plants and of essential oils production, in order to facilitate the study and design of alternative cleaning products us- ing aromatic plants, adding value to these. -Application of certain essential oils to horticultural products which are freshly minimally processed (IV Gama) as cleaners and preservatives. Project: “Reducing mineral fertilizers and agro-chemicals by recycling treated organic waste as compost and bio-char products” This project is framed within the cooperation pro- gramme of the VII Framework Programme, call: FP7-KBBE-2011-5. The general objective of the project is to identify and develop strategies and technologies to reduce and substitute the application of fertilizers & agro-chemi- cals and to motivate the sector so that it implements waste plants. Tecnova TC collaborates with the project as mem- ber of a partnership led by the SME ‘Stichting Dienst Landbouwkundig Onderzoek’ (ALTERRA). Tecno- va leads a work load which includes car- rying out analysis of the life cycle of pro- cesses and products generated as part of the project. Moreo- ver, it also participates with some agronom- ical trials which will be carried out at the Experimental Centre and which are aimed at testing the prop- erties of the bio-char produced during the project as organic amendment. Annual Report 2013 Project: “Lactic Acid bacteria and other antagonist microorganisms as bio-preservatives in freshly minimally processed products, or ‘BIOSAFOOD’” This European project is led by DOMCA, with the par- ticipation of Tecnova Foundation, University of Gra- nada, the company ‘MKS’, and the Institute for Food Science and Technology of Kemerovo (Russia). The purpose is to develop bio-preservatives for applying them to horticultural products which are freshly min- imally processed (IV Gama) in order to enlarge their lifespan in this way. The initiative is expected to finish in 2015. It is funded by the Regional Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment, as well as by ERDF, within Call 2012, EUROTRANSBIO, ERA-NET of the 7th Framework Programme. Collaborative Projects AEI: “Association for the competitive improvement of the Agro-industrial cluster” This Association started in July 2009 with a view to promote joint actions from a group of businesses devoted to the commercialisation and auxiliary in- dustries; to contribute to increase competitiveness in the agro-industrial cluster at Andalusian, national and international level; to boost the design and launch of new products and processes; to detect present cluster needs for putting into practice joint R&D+I projects; to promote inter-sector cooperation; and to reinforce the economical structure of the cluster. The collaboration projects presented within the framework of AEI are as follows: Project: “Feasibility study about the production of IV Gama mango in Agro- alimentary industries” The objective of this project managed by ACAL, with the collaboration of Tecnova, is to study the techni- cal and economical feasibility of producing IV Gama mango, with a view to revitalise national horticultural production that is freshly minimally processed. The initiative is funded by the Ministry for Industry, Energy and Tourism, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “Feasibility study about the production of native species from the province of Almería under greenhouse conditions” This initiative, started by the Association for the com- petitive improvement of the Agro-industrial cluster, or ACAL, has the purpose of studying, from a technical perspective, the identification of aromatic vegetable species which are part of the native flora of the prov- ince of Almería. The idea is for them to be cultivated under greenhouses, with the final purpose of using that vegetable material to develop new products for the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture. The project is funded by the Ministry for Industry, Energy and Tour- ism, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Projects with companies Project: “Control of the humidity level as a limiting factor for competitiveness, employability and exporting capacity in the Andalusian Agro-alimentary cluster - HUMIDEX” “HUMIDEX: Control of the humidity level as a limiting factor for competitiveness, employability and exporting capacity in the Andalusian agro-alimentary cluster” is a project led by the company ‘Novedades Agrícolas’, to- gether with ‘Agrobío’, ‘Alarcontrol’, ‘Almeriplant’ and ‘Sistemas de Calor’, all of them belonging to the Auxil- iary Industry sector, and in which Tecnova Technologi- cal Centre & University of Almería participate. This pro- ject has been funded by the Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, within the ERDF-INNTERCONECTA call, via IDEA Agency and CDTI (Centre for Industrial and Technological Development, Spain). 7.   • 41. Annual Report 2013 This project is in the process of being entirely imple- mented in Andalusia, over a period of three years and involving an investment of 5 million euros for com- panies. By means of this project, a new concept of greenhouse and technological equipment have been developed, aiming at the production of vegetables continuously throughout the year, through an optimi- zation of production resources. Among the objectives of the project, we can mention the design of a greenhouse structure which can host and optimize all technologies having to do with the production, quality, and sanitary state of the plants, as well as with good farming practices and with lessening the environmental impact, with a view to be nearer the sort of ideal greenhouse set in a warm climate. Project: “Remote control of horticultural production in greenhouses and integration with demand foresight and marketing systems” This initiative is led by the company ‘Hispatec’, to- gether with ‘Nazaries IT’, ‘Proyecta Ingenio’ and ‘Parquenat’, and with the participation of Tecnova. Its purpose is to create a system for the automat- ic control of agronomical parameters in horticultur- al production (tomato and watermelon) with a view to design a predictive calculus model of production. This model will be related to a model for calculating commercialisation demands according to market de- mands calculation. This project is supported by funds from the Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, within the ERDF-INNTERCONECTA call, via IDEA Agency and CDTI. 7. R&D+I
  • 42. 42 Annual Report 2013 Project: “Preservation of highly perishable food products via active packaging incorporating natural compounds from the olive oil industry (ACTIVEOLIVE)” ACTIVEOLIVE has the purpose of adding value to ol- ive oil industry surpluses, extracting high value added compounds to be applied to preservation technolo- gies allowing for the improvement of the lifespan of highly perishable products, such as fishing and horti- cultural ones. The companies participating in the project are: ‘Ol- ivar de Segura’, ‘Abelló Linde’, ‘Esteros de Canela’, ‘Bandesur’, ‘Plastienvase’ & ‘Miguel García Sánchez e Hijos’, S.A. This initiative is framed within the ERDF-INNTERCONECTA call, and funded by the Spanish Ministry for Economy & Competitiveness, via IDEA Agency and CDTI. Project: Improvement of Agro- alimentary quality and safety by means of the technification of harvesting processes, or AGROBIOTEC” The companies ‘Capital Genetic EBT’ S.L., ‘Única Group’ S.C.A. and ‘Industrial Aeronáuticas INASOR’ S.L.U. have come together to develop this project. The activities to be developed are: new varieties of melon, a software to establish nutritional and organo- leptic parameters of such varieties, an automatic han- dling line for online assessment, and the calibration algorithms of such a handling line. The project will last for two years, and aims at improving food quality and safety via new technologies applied to Post-harvest- ing. The initiative is supported by funds from the Re- gional Department of Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “Ripening techniques for improving commercialization of custard apple” This initiative is developed by the entity ‘Mercomo- tril’ S.A., with the participation of Tecnova, and aims at improving the period of preservation, storing and com- mercialisation of custard apples, thus improving the quality of this fruit. Annual Report 2013 Project: “Design and development of equipment for pepper shrinking” This project is managed by ‘Aldeílla Suministros In- dustriales S.L.’ and has the purpose of designing and developing a new model of machine devoted to pep- per retractilado, so that present technologies are im- proved. The project is being carried out in the Engi- neering Department of TECNOVA Centre. Equipment is being developed so that systems providing notice- able energy savings are created, while perfectioning current shrinking systems. This project is supported by funds from the Regional Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Region- al Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “Design and development of a robotic system for cutting stalks of avocado” The project is presented by the company ‘Miguel García Sánchez e Hijos’ S.A., in collaboration with Tecnova, and aims at developing a robotic system with artificial vision which is able to detect the au- tomatic position of advocado and then slice the re- maining stalk, thus guaranteeing an adequate han- dling of the fruit with no loss for quality. The project is supported by funds from the Region- al Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalu- sia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “Development of environmental-friendly strategies in order to reduce rottenness and damage by cold in ecological tomato and pepper” This project is managed by the company PROCAM and consists in lengthening the commercial life of to- mato and pepper coming from ecological farming by means of preservation strategies based on physical and non-chemical treatments that are environmen- tal-friendly and respectful with an ecological system of production. This will allow for both a longer commer- cialisation period and a longer lifespan of products at selling points. The project is supported by funds from the Regional Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: Varietal flair and freshly minimally process in aubergines” This project deals with technological development and was developed by the company ‘Caparrós Nature’ S.L. By means of it, it has been possible to produce freshly minimally processed aubergine while avoiding the problems of browning commonly difficulting its commercialization.   • 44. 44 Annual Report 2013 Project: “Development of technology for application of ULR (Ultra-Low flow Rate irrigation) watering” This project is presented by the company ‘PRIMA-RAM’ S.A. and has the general purpose of developing an hy- draulic prototype allowing for the application of an ir- rigation dose that could reach drip flows between 100 and 400 ml/ h, as well as the necessary automatization for carrying out irrigation for one or two minutes up to 200 times per day. The technical team of Tecnova Foundation has participated in the development of this project. The project is supported by funds from the Re- gional Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of An- dalusia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “Design and development of a singular terminal element associated to an anthropomorphic robot able to introduce peppers inside boxes with little tops” This project is presented by the company ‘Miguel García Sánchez e hijos’ S.A., in collaboration with Tecnova. It has the purpose of creating a final device that is able to pick up peppers and introduce them into boxes with little tops, in a single-cycle operation. The project is supported by funds from the Region- al Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalu- sia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “Design and development of an automatic system for fitting avocados” The aim of this project, presented by the company ‘Miguel García Sánchez e hijos’ S.A., in collaboration with Tecnova, consists in the development of an au- tomatic device for fitting avocado in specific packag- ing while guaranteeing an adequate handling of the fruit and no loss for quality. By means of this system, the quality of the fruit is maintained and its lifespan is not reduced. The project is supported by funds from the Region- al Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalu- sia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “New long-life cover. Optimisation of productive structures for competitiveness and internationalisation of the AIA sector” The project, presented by the company SOTRAFA S.A., with the collaboration of Tecnova, has the pur- pose of improving the properties of the present films installed as covers, which do not last for more than 36 months and are not resistant to extreme weather conditions. Because of this, SOTRAFA S.A. is going to develop a new film that is more resistant and provides a better solution to the problems caused by current covers in multi-tunnel greenhouse structures. Annual Report 2013 Project: “Development and implementation of techniques for massive breeding of ‘Aphidius Colemani’ for production in a bio- factory in Almería” The project, led by the company ‘Bgreen Biolog- ical Systems’ S.L., with the participation of Tecno- va, has the purpose of getting the process ready for the massive bio-production of ‘Aphibius Colemani’, an auxiliary insect, in bio-factories in Almería. Tec- nova researchers will be responsible of the lab trials in this project. These will be done using cultivation chambers and partly in the field trials taking place at the Experimental Centre. The project is supported by funds from the Regional Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by Europe- an Regional Development Funds. Project: “Design of an integrated system: Screen, false ceiling and technical floor” The project is led by the company ‘Torresa Proyectos & Ingeniería’ S.L. and has the purpose of designing and developing an innovative integrated system con- sisting of an office screen, a false metallic ceiling and a registrable floor with homogeneous finishing. The project is supported by funds from the Regional De- partment for Economy, Innovation, Science and Em- ployment of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by European Regional Development Funds. Project: “Stapler and staples for fixation in NGS system” This project, presented by the company ‘New Grow- ing Systems’ S.L. (NGS), had the purpose of develop- ing a stapler that is able to set the clips fixing the mul- ti-bands of crops in the NGS system in an efficient way for the support of the metallic structure over which it stands, as well as for an adequate functioning of the system. The Tecnova Technical and Research team has participated in this project. Tecnova researchers are going to car- ry out the lab trials partly in the field and also using its cultivation chambers. Project: “Automatization of packaging lines of cucumber, pepper and Galia melon” The purpose of this project led by the company ‘Construcciones Mecánicas Emilio Gea’ has been the development of an automatic packaging system by means of the design of a handling device with com- puter-based vision for elongated vegetables, special- ly cucumbers, peppers and melons. This, together with a final packaging robot, integrated on the line, and via the innovative design of a grasping system, has been able to pick up products and put them into its packages automatically. These products have been the selected ones because they share a calibration machine in almost all horticultural handling plants, but their harvesting periods are different, so that the innovation is more versatile. The project has been supported by funds from the Regional Department for Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and co-fund- ed by European Regional Development Funds. Project: “Aquapony with NGS System: breeding of tench and near integration with breeding of micro- algae” This project, led by the company ‘New Growing Sys- tems’, with the participation of Tecnova Foundation as well, has the general purpose of combining three productive systems, such as Hydroponic cultivation in NGS system and Aquaculture, via the aquaponic technique and incorporating as innovations an im- provement in the quality of water flowing back, via another system of water treatment, and from the production of micro-algae and the breeding of na- tional water-dwelling species such as tench. Project: “Development and improvement of production and preservation processes in freshly minimally processed mango” This project has been presented by the company ‘Miguel García Sánchez e Hijos’ S.A., with the col- laboration of technicians and researchers from Tec- nova, with a view to develop a complete protocol for the production of freshly minimally processed mango. This process will cover all stages, from the reception of fruits to quality control of the packaging, including the stages of product cutting and micro-biological quality assurance. This will involve the coordination of all techno- logical applications for greenhouses, independently of its manufacturer. The team of Tecnova will be in charge of carrying out trials of the system in the field, in order to analyse and validate the adequate work- ing of the platform. Project: “Development of a combined strategy for improving the post-harvest lifespan of chestnut” The company ‘Tejerina’ Fruits S.L. aims at improving the post-harvest lifespan of chestnut by combining techniques and treatments. The project is supported by funds from the Department of Economy, Innova- tion, Science and Employment of the Regional Gov- ernment of Andalusia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “Development of a biodegradable anti-froth for liquid solutions applicable in agriculture and capable of regulating pH” The present project, led by the company ‘Agrar’ Southern Plants S.A., has the purpose of developing a pH regulator for nutritious solutions used in horti- culture that, not only regulates the solution pH, but also contains a biodegradable substance formulated from vegetable oils coming from domestic and cater- ing waste and with anti-froth properties, capable of reducing the superficial tension of the solution. The project has been supported by funds from the De- partment of Economy, Innovation, Science and Em- ployment of the Regional Government of Andalusia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Project: “Development of equipment for cutting melon and watermelon hygienically in retail businesses – INFRUCUT” In this project, the company ‘Induser Poniente’ aims at developing machinery for retail businesses with which to clean, cut and wrap melon and watermelon fruit portions. The project is supported by funds from the Department of Economy, Innovation, Science and Employment of the Regional Government of Andalu- sia, and co-funded by ERDF funds. Projects for Innovation Management ‘Innovation Cheque’ The ‘Innovation Cheque’ is a funding tool of the Re- gional Department for Economy, Innovation and Sci- ence, targeting Andalusian SMEs & micro-SMEs. It is part of the Programme: ‘Incentives for the Promotion of Innovation and Business Development 2008-2013’. The purpose of the ‘Innovation Cheque’ is to provide specialized consulting services allowing Andalusian businesses to improve their productive processes, to hire assistance to develop or manufacture a new product, to use e-Commerce, to get advice for im- proving activities, or to design a commercial plan or marketing strategy. Throughout 2013, Tecnova Foundation has provided consulting services to the following companies: ‘Ag- rolaboratorios Nutricionales’, ‘Agroindustrial Kimitec’, ‘Bionutrición Vegetal’, ‘Econatur’ Labs, ‘Hortalan Med’, ‘Ispemar SCA’, & ‘Torresa’ Projects + Engineering. Acknowledgment as consultants within the ‘Innocámaras’ Programme: The objective of this programme is to boost an inno- vation-based culture among small and middle-sized companies located in the regions considered as ‘Ob- 7. In the first one, a diagnosis is done by a specialized mentor working for the Chambers for Commerce al- lowing to identify possible actions for improvement via innovation. In the second one, TECNOVA provides advice to companies as to the development and im- plementation of these innovation-related recommen- dations previously identified. In 2013, counselling services were provided to the company ‘Hortovelez’ S.A. Counselling for Innovation Management to companies belonging to the Intensive Farming industry: Throughout 2013, Tecnova TC has collaborated with more than 100 companies, offering advice on inno- vation management and participating in some of the stages of the several R&D+I projects developed by them. Tecnova as a local agent of the PIDI network, CDTI: This initiative started in 2006 by the CDTI (Centre for Industrial and Technological Development), in collab- oration with the General Directorate for SMEs and under the coordination of the OEP: Economy Office of the Presidency of the Government. TECNOVA TC is considered a local agent within the PIDI network (a Network of Info Points on R&D+I) and offers compa- nies three specialized agents, acting in coordination and under the supervision of the CDTI. This PIDI network has the purpose of offering free in- formation and counselling services to companies and entrepreneurs. These services are to do with public funds from all administrative sectors (local, region- al, national and European) that can better suit their needs. In this way, the idea is to boost private in- vestment in R&D+I, making it easier for companies to access the funding sources. 7. R&D+I

Training The training actions for 2013 were focused on meeting the needs of a competitive sector and, with it, impro- ving even further the qualification of the companies. For this purpose, an annual training programme is de- signed including training sessions or seminars. They included participation by gurus and a technical type of training focused on the strategic lines of the Founda- tion & aimed at directors, managers and middle ma- nagers, as well as technical staff of companies. External training Organisation of Training Sessions by Tecnova Workshop: “Negotiation and Conflict Management” (21st of March, 2013) Within the programme involving striking gurus, Tec- nova Foundation had the pleasure of the participation of Mr. Juan Mateo, a high level speaker. He led a tra- ining workshop on Negotiation and Conflict Manage- ment which was aimed at businesspeople, Head of Departments, Human Resources personnel, etc. The idea was to provide attendants with a more practical and interactive perspective on negotiation techniques and how to face them. Beginners Course: “Introduction to Wine Culture - Learning about Enology” (12th & 13th of April, 2013) As part of the Tecnova area ‘Sensory Analysis’, and for promoting our job, a course was organised which was taught by the renowned enologist Ms. Cristina Calvache. She explained, in a very practical way and in the form of a workshop, the basics of wine tas- ting and also introduced us to wine culture. The idea was that the attendants could enjoy in an entertaining way learning about the principles of sensorial analysis applied to Enology. As a plenary to the course, and to put into practice what was learned, a group meal was actually organized at the facilities of Tecnova.

Training Presentation: “7 reasons why not being digital is a mistake” (25th April, 2013) The objective of this presentation, performed by Mr. Juan Pablo Seijo, consultant specialized in new tech- nologies, was to teach about the advantages of the technical age, such as why we should get into this world for not being outdated in the new digital age. The presentation was performed by Mr. Emilio Martí- nez, President of Tecnova. Presentation: “Create, Believe & Achieve” (19th of June, 2013) A high-level conference took place, with the partici- pation of Mr. Álex Rovira. It was framed within the 7th Meeting of the Auxiliary Industry for Agriculture and was held previous to a formal dinner. Mr. Rovira is an economist, writer and consultant who presented, for more than an hour, a presentation entitled “Create, Believe & Achieve” - on entrepreneurship, talent, op- timism and personal & professional success.
  • 52. 52 Annual Report 2013 Mr. Emilio Martínez, President of Tecnova, presen- ted the speaker and introduced his presentation. The event took place in a unique location: the cultural assembly-hall of the Cajamar bluiding known as the ‘Butterflies’ building, located in the very centre of Al- mería. The conference was sponsored by the savings bank Cajamar, and dealt with the keys for success through effort, belief and talent to cope with projects, in order to make the impossible possible. The speaker talked about the importance of positivism as a way to pro- mote development, by means of inspiration, creativity and the hope for believing in creating and achieving personal and professional fulfilment. Healthy fast food: “Easy, useful and practical cooking techniques” (6th of November, 2013) This Cookery workshop was framed within the actions planned as part of the collaboration agreement be- tween the Association of cooks and pastry cooks of Almería (ACRIA) & Tecnova Foundation. More specifically, this training action, led by Mr. José Torrente, Chef at ‘Hotel Catedral’ Restaurant & Tea- cher at the ‘Hotel and Catering School of Almería’, was aimed at offering efficient and fast techniques for cooking fast food using healthy products such as the horticultural ones from Almería. These training courses would like to promote the be- nefits and advantages of Gastronomy made using lo- cal products from Almería. Creative Cookery for Christmas: reinvent, innovate and surprise your family during next Christmas dinner (3rd & 4th of December, 2013) This session was framed within the actions deve- loped as part of the pro- gramme for Experimen- tal Cooking by Tecnova, with a view to promote Gastronomy from Alme- ría. The course was organised in two sessions (3rd and 4th of December), due to the great success of it in terms of participation. The course was taught by Chef Mr. Antonio Gázquez, from ‘Las Eras’ Restaurant. It was open to anybody who could be interested in lear- ning more about food and cooking through gastrono- mic research. Organisation of Collaborative Sessions Presentation: “The art of presenting” (13th of March, 2013) This session has been the first of the ones planned within a framework for collaboration between the Economists Association and Tecnova Foundation. It was presented by Ms. Carmen Galera, Manager of Tecnova, and Mr. Javier López, representative of the Managing and Training Board of the Economists As- sociation. The training action was led by Mr. Gonzalo Álvarez Marañón, Telecommuncations and Computing Engi- neer, with a view to help professionals to plan their presentations while bearing in mind several aspects such as: their audience, assigned time, spoken ex- pression and communication, how to stress the con- tents, etc. 8.   • 54. 54 Annual Report 2013 Informative session: “Ecological Production, Methodology for implementation and certification in accordance with European Regulation (CE) 834/2007” (3rd of April, 2013) This informative session, promoted by ‘Imp Consul- tores’ & ‘Bureau Veritas’, both of them belonging to the Foundation, had the purpose of giving information about European rules and regulations in relation to Ecological Production and with a view to its imple- mentation and certification. Session: “Mastery of emotions and self-leadership for success” (5th of April, 2013) This session was held at the Tecnova headquarters and was managed by the Economists Association of Almería, in front of more than 100 people. Ms. Móni- ca Esgueva was the one who taught this workshop on emotions. She presented on the keys to being effi- cient with success by means of self-control, stress control, and being happier with one self. Technical Session on: “Advances on soilless cultivation” (29th of April, 2013) Tecnova, in collaboration with University of Almería, organised this technical session, framed within the PhD Programme in Protected Agriculture of the De- partment of Agricultural Studies. The purpose of such session was to provide informa- tion on the innovations in systems for soilless cultiva- tion by means of new tools for optimizing the profita- bility and sustainability of production. In this session, there were the following participants: Dr. Heiner Lieth, Professor at the University of Da- vies, California (USA); Dr. José Miguel Guzmán, UAL; Mr. José Fuentes Rubio, Technician at ‘New Growing System’ S.L.; Mr. Antonio Alba Rodríguez, Technician at S.C.A.; & Dr. Carolina Clara Martínez Gaitán, Head of the Experimental Centre of Tecnova TC. Seminar: “Productivity and Personal Management” (23rd of May, 2013) This seminar, led by Mr. Alberto Pena (writer, blogger, speaker and coach in Productivity and Personal Ma- nagement), together with the Economists Association of Almería, had the purpose, among others, of lear- ning about the foundations and routines in terms of Personal Management, and so being able to improve communication and team work techniques by means of new tools and organisational routines. 8. The objective of this session, aimed at horticultu- ral businessmen, farming and agronomical technical engineers, as well as students in this field, was to learn about innovations in the field of fertirrigation by means of new tools optimizing sustainability in inten- sive farming. In this session, there were the following participants: Technicians from the companies ‘Viagro’ & ‘Himarcan’, both belonging to Tecnova; Dr. José Miguel Guzmán, UAL; Dr. Raúl Cabrera, Professor at Texas A&M AgriLife Research; & Mr. Eduardo Pardo, Agronomical Engineer at Tecnova Foundation. Session on: “How to design and implement a incentive-based system in accordance with productivity” (6th of June, 2013) The session was presented by Ms. Carmen Galera, Manager of Tecnova, and had the participation of Mr. Antonio Mayor, Partner and Director of ‘Imp Consul- ting’; Mr. Ignacio Clemente, Consulting Manager at ‘Imp Consulting’; as well as the collaboration of Ms. Mª Ángeles Rodríguez, Technical Advisor at IDEA Agency in Almería. This session had the purpose of showing the importance of planning an incentive-ba- sed system applied to work productivity. As a final point for the session, the IDEA Agency Technician gave a presentation on aid available for implementing advanced services projects. Technical Session on: “Biomass - Solutions applied to Farming” (14th of November, 2013) The companies ‘Nova Energía’ & ‘ING Tecnoindustrial’, in collaboration with Tecnova, organised this technical session, whose objective was learning further about the different applications and benefits of Biomass in Agriculture. Biomass can offer solutions in terms of Energy Efficiency that are both reliable and profita- ble - for using them in greenhouses, agro-alimentary industries, wine cellars, drying rooms and other Agri- culture-related services.   • 56. 56 Annual Report 2013 Workshop: “Stress Control” (12th of December, 2013) The workshop was organised by the Economists As- sociation of Almería at the Tecnova Headquarters, and was taught by Ms. Amparo Casares, graduated in Psychology and PhD student in Neurophysiology at the University of Bristol (UK). The objective of the workshop was the promotion of physical and psychological wellbeing by means of tools allowing us to cope with stress and to ease the physical symptoms that job and personal pressures can have on our bodies. Internal Training Annual Programme in Organisational Development of the TECNOVA Technological Centre With a view to boost the motivation of personnel at the Foundation, as well as to revitalise team work spi- rit, Tecnova Foundation has carried out a complete programme of internal training with the participation of experts from different business sectors. The idea was to improve the knowledge of the different wor- king areas of an organisation, from administration to commercial and production areas, including the final consumer. 8. Training

Information & Promotion Infotecnova Infotecnova bulletins continue with its informative line towards the local business fabric in relation to the actions of the Technological Centre. This bulletin consists in four news about the topics of Promotion, Information, Internationalization, R&D+i and Training. In total, twelve bulletins were published during 2013. TECNOVA TC in Social Networks Tecnova Foundation is present in social networks, professional networks and networks of general in- terest such as: Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and You Tube. All this with a view to make the public know about the services, activities, projects and other pro- motional activities carried out by the Foundation. Tecnova in the Media Tecnova TC continues with the implementation of a communication department to give information on the actions and services provided for the business fabric. Its specialized staff centralises all the info on events, services and activities carried out by Tecnova and spread it to all those interested in the progress of the Foundation. In this way, the centre can be present in the main media (printed press, online press, radio & TV).
