- As we begin to examine the details of the training program planning, it is important to determine whether the learning program is intended to meet an industry or national accreditation standard. This program must be based on formal standards.
- The alternative to this type of program is a program designed to meet an organisational requirement. This has a focus that is based on informal standards.
- Formal Standards are the ones we find in training packages. We can examine the Elements and Performance Criteria in the Unit of Competency to plan our program.
- Informal Standards are more flexible and we can use resources other than the training packages to design the program. Often the organisation itself has some excellent resources available such as manuals and policies and procedures.
- Formal standards outline specific ways to train and assess for competencies while informal standards do not.
- It can be difficult to know where to begin when constructing a learning program for informal standards. It is helpful to follow the following guideline.
- Undertake a task analysis Define what it means to be competent 3. Define the content involved
- By using a methodical approach to work out the skills required and comparing them to the skills the employees already have, we can determine where the gaps lie and focus the program on closing those gaps.
