Meldonium is a drug banned by WADA in 2016 that is used to treat heart conditions but may improve endurance. It works by altering carnitine metabolism and forcing the body to burn glucose instead of fat. While evidence of performance enhancement is limited, many athletes tested positive for meldonium in 2015-2016, including tennis star Maria Sharapova. Meldonium sales in Latvia are over 56 million euros annually, though it is not approved for use in the United States.
