Problems that can be avoided by Shining
• If windows are dirty, very little
sunlight filters through. This leads
to poor morale and inefficient
work.
• Defects are less obvious in dark,
messy factories.
• Puddles of oil and water can
cause slipping and injuries.
• Machines do not receive sufficient
check-up and tend to break-down
often. This leads to less
productivity and late deliveries.
• Insufficient maintenance also
tend to operate incorrectly, which
can produce defective parts and
also be hazardous.

Tools for assigning 3S responsibilities…
• 1. 5S Map – is a tool that can be
used to evaluate current location of
parts, jigs, tools, dies, equipment,
and machinery, and to decide best
locations. Use two maps to show
‘before’ and ‘after’ locations.
• 2. 5S Schedules – This shows in
detail who is responsible for
cleaning which areas on which days
and times of the day. The 5S
schedule should be posted in the
work area.
• 3. 5S Job Cycle Charts, which list
the 5S jobs to be done in each
area, and set a frequency cycle for
each job.
