HQ Depot was initially managing their transportation operations from within, but with the need to expand to new markets it would not have been feasible given the lack of logistical resources it currently has . There was also a concern the company was providing inconsistent shipping times and service reliability issues. If this expansion was going to be successful using a 3PL would meet faster and consistent shipping deadlines. HQ Depot would then be able to focus more on customer service and what they describe as its "core competency" maintaining its leadership in the office and school supply industry.
3. What steps would you suggest be considered by HQ Depot as it beings to analyze the feasibility of forming a relationship with individual 3PL providers?
As HQ Depot beings to analyze the feasibility of forming a relationship with 3PL providers, setting expectations for what the company is looking for in a 3PL. These expectations include: provide superior service and execution, trust/information sharing, solution innovation, capable technologies that executes, ongoing executive level support, and service offering that aligns with customer strategy and industry knowledge. If a particular 3PL provider cannot meet those expectations, they need to look elsewhere. Since this is mutual relationship and collaborative effort, the 3PL should also provide expectations for HP Depot.

With HQ wanting to expand their reach into the market but not having access to the logistics to expand it would make sense for them to want to use 3PL. With a third-party logistics HQ would not have to worry about transportation, warehousing, distribution, and financial services. The rationale behind the decision was based on HQ wanting to maintain their status on their shelf-stable juices, while being able to strengthen that core. HQ wants to expand their logistics network. Also, HQ would be able to centralize their transportation operations.
What steps would you suggest be considered by HQ Depot as it begins to analyze the feasibility of forming a relationship with individual 3PL providers?
· Perform a strategic assessment- HQ needs to view the options and locations of various 3PL’s to find which would fit more with their goals
· Decision to form a relationship- HQ would then decide which 3PL’s would suit their needs and goals. And contact their agents for meeting and discussions.

Supply chain practices are nearing their third decade of maturation. The term supply chain excellence is bandied about by leaders, consultants and technology providers, but there is no alignment on what it means.
Conventional systems of measurement for supply chain excellence are problematic. In this report, we share insights gained during interviews with 75 supply chain pioneers. Based on their feedback we created a new framework, that we define here as the Supply Chain Effective Frontier, for supply chain leaders to use to determine supply chain excellence. This methodology is based on publicly available financial balance sheet data grouped into four sets of supply chain ratios: growth, profitability, cycle, and complexity.
We believe that supply chain excellence is best defined as the alignment of the supply chain team to deliver results to meet and exceed the requirements of the business strategy. This requires a clear vision and cross-functional coordination and alignment over a multi-year road map. It needs to be holistic. With HQ wanting to expand their reach into the market but not having access to the logistics to expand it would make sense for them to want to use 3PL. With a third-party logistics HQ would not have to worry about transportation, warehousing, distribution, and financial services. The rationale behind the decision was based on HQ wanting to maintain their status on their shelf-stable juices, while being able to strengthen that core. HQ wants to expand their logistics network. Also, HQ would be able to centralize their transportation operations.
What steps would you suggest be considered by HQ Depot as it begins to analyze the feasibility of forming a relationship with individual 3PL providers?
· Perform a strategic assessment- HQ needs to view the options and locations of various 3PL’s to find which would fit more with their goals

Conventional systems of measurement for supply chain excellence are problematic. In this report, we share insights gained during interviews with 75 supply chain pioneers. Based on their feedback we created a new framework, that we define here as the Supply Chain Effective Frontier, for supply chain leaders to use to determine supply chain excellence. This methodology is based on publicly available financial balance sheet data grouped into four sets of supply chain ratios: growth, profitability, cycle, and complexity.
We believe that supply chain excellence is best defined as the alignment of the supply chain team to deliver results to meet and exceed the requirements of the business strategy. This requires a clear vision and cross-functional coordination and alignment over a multi-year road map. It needs to be holistic. The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a methodology for identifying the most important limiting factor — i.e. constraint — and systematically improving it. It was developed by Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt, introduced in 1984 book, The Goal.
TOC differs from traditional management views, in that traditional methods seek to make improvements throughout the organization. They divide the organization into smaller, more manageable pieces. The objective, thus, is to maximize the performance of each part, resulting in global improvement.
On the other hand, TOC takes a more focused approach. Instead of improving everywhere, the TOC approach seeks only to improve the few variables (or constraints) that have the largest impact on the organization’s performance. By trying to improve everything everywhere, the risk is that nothing will be improved that really counts. TOC follows the adage “a chain is no stronger than its weakest link.” An interesting phenomenon about chains is that strengthening any link except the weakest one does not improve the strength of the whole chain. Strengthening the weakest link produces an immediate increase in the strength of the whole chain, but only up to the level of the next weakest link.
There are 3 types of constraints that exist in an organization:
Capacity Constraint. This constraint occurs when a resource which cannot provide timely capacity as demanded by the system.
Market Constraint. This is when the amount of customers orders is not sufficient to sustain the required growth of the system.

Suppliers usually charge a higher rate to compensate for inefficiencies in their
operational structure. Understanding those inefficiencies helps identify significant
savings potential.
Logistics Service Providers either increase their rates or add fuel surcharges in order
to protect themselves from the effect of fluctuating fuel prices. A fixed rate benefits
the customer when fuel prices go up, but creates needless high fuel bills when prices
are down.
Ordering habits of certain customers add to the Transportation Costs. For example,
unknowingly ordering early next-day deliveries, without an absolute necessity for it,
causes significant (20% in some cases) extra cost than a delivery at noon. A 24-hour
delivery time costs even less than the noon delivery.
