1. Reflection: The English Language
This text relates to the class objectives by showing us how the development of
English was occurring throughout the years until the English we speak today. Moreover
it shows who the participants of this development were and which their contributions to
the English language. It also shows the periods of the development of English such as:
Old English and some contribution of it which still remain in modern English; Middle
English, when grammatical word started being used, Early modern English, with
Shakespeare’s influence on the language and modern English and its development by
the Industrial Revolution, globalization, etc. It was also explained that the English we
speak today is significantly different from that of the Old English.
Beside, by reading this text we could learn a bit about history which is
important because we, as future teacher, must know how the language we teach became
what it is now, understanding that English went through a lot of changes helped by
invasions, different tribes, military contacts, influences of the Roman Empire and
Germanics and some important writer of the time. People needed to communicate, so
they had to create new languages in order to everyone could understand each other.
This text helped me to understand and distinguish the different periods of
English and some important events that contribute to the creation of English. Likewise
the text showed me that the English changes were or have been external and internal;
external caused by the society, geography, politics, etc. and internal by linguistics
reasons.
