                   of NATO on a map**  Something along those lines?
• The fundamental purpose of NATO was to protect its
 members from a possible attack from the USSR.

• In the NATO Treaty, Article 5 it states “The Parties agree
 that an armed attack against one or more of them in
 Europe or North America shall be considered an attack
 against them all…”

• NATO was created because if the USSR attacked a
 country that had signed the treaty, they would all go to war
 against USSR as an alliance.
• The NATO treaty was signed on April 4, 1949 in
 Washington, DC.

• The 12 original nations signed the agreement.

    • The original purpose of NATO was to protect its members from a
      possible attack from the USSR.

    • Deter USSR Expansionism


    • Stop Nationalist Militarism


    • Encourage European Political Integration
• Meetings are called when there is a controversial issue or
 an event comes up that effects a member or group of
 member nations.

• The meetings take place in one of the member countries
 or at the NATO headquarters in Belgium. The site of the
 meeting is reviewed and chosen by a committee.
• The fundamental role of NATO is to safeguard the freedom and
 security of its member countries by political and military means.

• NATO is playing an increasingly important role in crisis management
 and peacekeeping.

• 28 member Nations


• Headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium.
