2. In modern society, most people respect
women much more in comparison to the
past.
This is largely the result of the feminist
movement, but also of the more general
fight against racism and sexism.
5. Today, in most first world
countries, there are no written
laws that discriminate between
the two genders. This is due to
the struggle of women in the
past centuries but even today.
7. In the third world countries poverty in
combination with impunity strengthens the
problem of “lacking” rights and, in general,
limited respect for women.
8. • 32 million girls do not have primary education and 29 million
of those who do, have no access to the most basic form of
secondary education.
• Worldwide, nearly 750 million women and girls living today
married before their 18th birthday.
• In three quarters of low and middle income countries, over
one in five girls have experienced violence from their partner
over the past 12 months.
9. • Suicide is the leading cause of death among teenage
girls aged 15-19 years worldwide, with the highest
rates in Southeast Asia.
• In the world, almost half (47%) female victims of
homicide of all ages are killed by family members or
their comrades, while the equivalent rate for men is
6%.
• About one in three girls aged 15-19 years today have
been subjected to amputation / severing of their
genitals in countries where this is still practiced. In
total, some 200 million girls and women all over the
world are already living with the damage caused by
this practice.
• In sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by HIV,
three out of four new infections among adolescents
aged 15-19 are in girls.
