2. WHO PLAYS A FUNDAMENTAL ROLE?
For someone, the media play a huge role in
stereotyping certain kinds of dance to particular
categories of people.
Recent genres such as hip hop and jazz have
been associated with Africans ,Americans
while
ballet and modern with Caucasians

3. WHAT’S THE SOCIETY’S ROLE?
• Society has cast judgment on particular
moves and music styles to the point that
in some cases it’s looked down upon if
someone were to venture out of his or
her norm and try something new that is
not necessarily classified by society as his
or her social standard.

4. For example...........
“white girls” are expected not to be
able to shake free their bodies or have
excellent rhythm that hip hop and jazz
techniques call for;
on the other side of the spectrum,
ballet is considered to be a
predominantly white dance form.

5. And what about the teacher’s role?
Teachers need to acknowledge this
discrimination and attack it full on.
Conversations and student dialogue
CAN
increase the awareness of these securities of
dance
BUT
also stimulate questions that force students to
connect to the material bringing them to a
higher cognitive level.
