Voice Over IP (VoIP) began development in 1995 with a group creating PC-to-PC communication, then in 1997 Jeff Pulver gathered interested people and in 1998 entrepreneurs created the first gateways. In 2003, two university students created the free and easy-to-install Skype softphone and Skype was later sold for billions. VoIP uses Internet Protocol to deliver voice communications, with dedicated VoIP phones, analog adapters, and softphone applications allowing connections over Ethernet or Wi-Fi networks. Future technologies may integrate VoIP with Facebook, replace common landlines with Wi-Fi networks, and enable over 400 million devices to use VoIP over Wi-Fi by 2013.
