- Few Spanish traditions divide opinion as much as bullfighting. For every bull aficionado willing to
defend their art there are ten who see it as just cruelty to animals and want it banned - yet still the
practice goes on.
- Bullfighting has existed for thousands of years and it has been popular in Spain for nearly a millennium,
though some say it has existed in Spain since the time of Emperor Claudius two thousand years ago.
- The bullfight, as it is practiced today, involves professional toreros (of which the most senior is called a
“matador”) who execute various formal moves which can be interpreted and innovated according to the
bullfighter's style.
- With the rise of the animal rights movement, an ever increasing number of people have been critical of
bullfighting, both within Spain and in the rest of the world. The number of websites in opposition to the
activity far exceeds the number in favor.
1. What is “bulfighting”? (3 pts)
2. What do you think will happen to bullfighting in the future? Why? (6 pts)
3. What would you propose to defend or stop this tradition? (6pts)
4. What are your impressions about bullfighting? (6pts)
5. Base on the unit and texts just read, connect the ideas of both texts, compare and contrast to evidence the points
in favor or against bullfighting (6pts)
