2. Anti-realist
Anti-realist films focus on the aspect of
being able to provide a theme of escape-
ism and something other than a realist
environment. This expands the
possibilities for film ideas by not being
bound by real-world limitations or issues.
An example of an anti-realist film would
be Star wars.
3. Linear
An linear narrative simply refers to a story that is
told in chronological order; a film that is told as the
events happen. An example of this is Batman
Begins (2005).
4. Closed ending
This refers to a film in which the main conflict is
solved at the end and does not leave the viewers
hanging as the story is concluded.
5. Single strand narrative
A single strand narrative refers to a narrative that
only tells one story and has no other focusses than
the main events that are happening in the story. An
example of this would be taken.
6. Realist
Films that try to maintain a certain level of realism
in their storytelling. An example of this would be
Schindler’s list.
7. Multi-strand narrative
This refers to a story which focusses on more than
one storyline and possibly has multiple main
characters. An example of a film like this is SAW.
8. Open ending
Where the film is not resolved at the end as to lead
on to more of a story. An example of this kind of
narrative is the Incredibles.
9. Non-linear
This refers to a narrative which is not told in
chronological order and may include things such as
flashbacks to fully explain a story. An example of
this can be seen with the Jason Bourne series.
10. How are narrative structures shown
in teaser trailers?
As a teaser trailer is not for actually showing many
key points in a film production, and is actually
purely to tease an audience and generate hype for
the film, it is not very likely that the narrative
structure of the entire product will actually be
presented. However the structures that can be
seen being used within the trailers for action films
themselves tend to be that of simple, single-strand
narratives and a realist environment . It generally
keeps to single strand in trailers to avoid confusing
the audience too much and the realist environment
with bits of action packed in to make it fast-paced
and exciting.
