Water is essential for all life but availability is decreasing while demand is increasing globally. More than 80 countries already face water shortages and by 2020 half the world's population will experience water stress. Water infrastructure costs have risen as water quality in rivers and underground sources has deteriorated due to pollution. Ecosystems are being damaged and over a billion people lack access to safe water, contributing to millions of preventable child deaths each year from waterborne diseases. Water is critical for human health, dignity and rights.
