2010 Sweetheart Application (Read Only)
1. Dear Applicant,
Thank you for expressing your interest in being our Sigma Chi Sweetheart. The
following outline should help you understand the Sweetheart Program, what can be
expected from being our Sweetheart, and what you can expect from us. This page does
not need to be printed out and turned in with your application.
The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi began as a song in the early 1900's, but soon grew to be a
part of American popular culture, and developed into a Sigma Chi tradition. Every year
every undergraduate chapter selects a Sweetheart based on her Sig-like qualities and
contributions to the chapter. The Sweetheart has the same qualities that we look for in a
brother. That means that we start by comparing her to our Jordan Standard, and then
look at her involvement on campus and in the community. We want to select a
Sweetheart who stands for the high ideals of Friendship, Justice, and Learning. The same
ideals that we uphold as Sigma Chis.
Once a Sweetheart is crowned, she remains a Sweetheart of Sigma Chi for the rest of her
life. We consider the Sweetheart, in many ways, a member, and she is required to uphold
the same values and standards as our members. Not only is she expected to support our
chapter, but she should also act as an ambassador for us to the campus community. She is
expected to help the fraternity with public relations and with fraternity events. Being the
sweetheart is definitely a time commitment but the prestige and enjoyment is worth it.
After every undergraduate chapter has chosen their sweetheart, Headquarters nominates
three finalists for the International Sweetheart of Sigma Chi.
The International Sweetheart of Sigma Chi has held a distinguished role in our
organization since Barbara Tanner was first crowned in 1948 by John Wayne. Since then,
an International Sweetheart has been chosen once every two years at Grand Chapter.
Each young lady has represented Sigma Chi's core values of friendship, justice and
learning while also making her own personal contributions to the Fraternity as well.
Long after their official term is over, the International Sweetheart maintains a special
place in the Fraternity.
We are looking forward to seeing how you fare in the competition and we wish you good
luck!
