Module 2: JOB SEARCH – How do I search for Overseas Jobs?
Your Job Search
There is no substitute for doing it right the first time!
Your search for a job overseas must begin in the right,
legal way. This means dealing only with duly
authorized recruitment agencies.
The Philippine Overseas Employment
Administration (POEA) issues licenses to these
agencies to recruit and employ Filipino overseas. Their
participation in the country’s overseas employment
program is crucial: they take charge of the
recruitment, hiring, and deployment of our countrymen
as well as ensure the strict implementation of
employment contracts.
The POEA does not encourage direct hiring or name
hiring as employers have no local representatives to
answer for any toward incident.

Your Job Search: The Recruitment Agency
To make sure you’re dealing with a duly licensed
recruitment agency, simply log on to www.poea.gov.ph
This is the POEA official website. Check the
recruitment agency’s name in the list of licensed
companies. Make sure it also has an approved job
order for the position you are applying for.
A company not included in the POEA list is an illegal
recruiter.
DO NOT DEAL WITH IT!

Your Job Search: Name/Direct Hiring
Browsing through the web, periodicals, and/or referrals
from relatives and friends may give you a job lead
overseas.
This is what is commonly referred to as NAME-HIRING or
DIRECT HIRING. A Name-Hire applicant is one seeks
employment on his own without the participation of a third
party, or a recruitment agency. Tread cautiously!
Great care must be exercised when considering this option.
Applicants are strongly advised to coordinate directly with the
POEA’s Name Hire Processing Unit. A personal visit to Unit
will be greatly advantageous to you.
Your prospective employer will prepare an Employment
Contract in your name and submit it to the nearest Philippine
embassy for authentication and verification. The employer will
take charge of your visa and work permit in the host country,
send you a round-trip airline ticket, and money for processing
fees.

Your Job Search: The Overseas Employment Certificate
Here’s a very important footnote about the Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC).
1. The OEC is proof that your documents have been processed at the POEA, including
payments for POEA processing fee, OWWA, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG contributions.
2. Remember, only documented workers are entitled to the full protection of the law as well
as the benefits of the programs and services of the government. Your OEC has a 2-
month validity from the date of issuance; this means the agency should deploy you
within this period.
3. Your OEC is your travel exit clearance at the airport when you leave. You are exempted
from paying the travel tax and terminal fee!
