As the saying goes, “there are no free lunches.” There’s a
price to pay for future benefits you will be enjoying when you
work abroad. It is prudent to know which fees you have to
pay and which ones are to be paid by your employer or
recruitment agency.
1) Placement Fee
The maximum allowable placement fee you will have to
pay the recruitment agency is equivalent to your one-
month basic salary.
Pay this only after you have signed the contract; demand
an Official Receipt (OR) in exchange for your payment.
The OR must show the actual amount paid and purpose/s
for such payment. Remember: seafarers and household
service workers (HSW) need not pay placement fees.
Take note there are countries that prohibit the collection of
placement fees from workers : the United Kingdom,
Ireland, Norway, the Netherlands, and the Canadian
provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and
British Columbia.
