1. Matt Matros Is a Poker Historian in the Making
If you have been paying any attention to the ongoing World Series of Poker this year, you know that
there has been plenty of action and it's got every poker fan on their toes just waiting to see what's going
to happen. Well, here it is: we might have a four-time consecutive bracelet winner-- the first time in the
history of the WSOP. That's right, Matt Matros, whether he believes it or not, is surely on his way of
making into the Poker Hall of Fame.
In last year's WSOP tournament, Matros became the 10th player in the history of the WSOP to win a
bracelet in three consecutive years. If he wins another bracelet this year, he can consider himself to be
above the ranks of Bobby Baldwin, Lakewood Louie, Johnny Moss, Gary Berland, Michael Mizrachi,
Allen Cunningham and Erik Seidel. He would be in the four-consecutive-years-club with Billy Boyd
and Doyle Brunson-- now three's a crowd!
Matros won his first bracelet back in 2010 in the $1,500 Limit Hold'em event (taking home $189,870).
His second win was the next year at the $2,500 Mixed Hold'em (Limit/No-Limit), taking home an
additional $303,501. For his third bracelet, he took the most money home yet after he won the $1,500
No-Limit Hold'em Six Handed event. His total winnings amounted to $454,835. Still in shock of it all,
many will agree that Matros hasn't quite realized how successful he is. In fact, he never imagined he
would ever be in that kind of company. As he puts it, the third win was “just complete icing on the
cake.”
According to Matros, to win a fourth bracelet seems a bit unrealistic; however, he would still welcome
the opportunity with open arms. He's keeping his expectations low, that way he won't be completely
bummed if he doesn't make it. Many fans consider him to be cautious about his optimism, but they also
agree that he is one of the best Limit Hold'em players in the world. Although the Hold'em tables is
where we'll usually find him, he's experimenting with other poker variants as well (Limit Hold'em has
slowly been losing its popularity in recent years).
