2. LA MITJANA DOCUMENTARY. (2021) Erasmus project. yr.6
Welcome to PAÏSOS documentary about one of the GREEN AREAS in Lleida.
Today, we present you, one of the most known green areas of our city, LA MITJANA.
The name comes from the little islands located in the middle of the river Segre that was formed when the river divided itself in smaller streams.
Mitjana’s natural Park is in the North East of Lleida, in Pardinyes neighbourhood.
It has got an extension of more than ninety ha. of river woods, humid fields and zones with water.
In 1979 it was declared of Natural interest thanks to a social movement.
In 1995, a cession settlement between FECSA, an electric company and the Town Hall was signed.
This agreement lasted for ninety years, and during this time, the Town Hall has been in charge of preserving the area in exchange of its usage.
From 1990 onwards, the park ecological recovery projects starts with the aim of preserving the park natural values and foster the public use for
the population.
During these years, the park has experienced many upgrades which are enjoyed by approximately one hundred thousand citizens.
In every natural park, there is a list of rules to follow. It is not allowed to camp, damage the nature, make noise, unleash pets, drive motor vehicles,
throw rubbish, hunt, make fires or enter to the reserved areas.
But we can do a lot of other activities like:
Enjoy and go for a walk through the allowed paths, observe the nature and animals on the observatories, take pictures, practise kayaking, paddle
surf, yoga, Pilates, bike riding, running, fishing or do picnics in the allowed spaces.
In the Mitjana Park, we can find the recovery centre where three educators are in charge of.
3. From Monday to Friday they offer pedagogical activities of Park’s discovery for schools.
On Sundays, there are also activities for the rest of the citizens that may want it.
In the Park, there is not only a lot to learn but also a lot to preserve. This task is supervised by a team of three workers, their role is to keep the
park clean and fix the paths, so everyone can use them. Taking special care of accessibility for those with mobility difficulties.
Mitjana’s scenery changes a lot for each season of the year.
All the species coexisting in the park are adapted to the environmental conditions, as examples of the woods fauna; we can find big mammals like wild
boards and badgers.
Reptiles like the salamander and the green snake. The birds tend to be small, like the red woodpecker. In the wetlands, birds are bigger like the Grey
Heron.
In Lleida we have several birds that are considered as protected species. We must take care about the storks, bearded vultures or little shrikes.
Furthermore, we also have to take into account that stream turtles and river crabs have been forced to move up due to invasive species.
We can also find white and black poplars, bramble bushes, vines and reeds.
La Mitjana, has become an open space to the citizens, where lots of activities with charitable and entertainment purposes are held. We all remember
Banyetes’ big celebrations. (Lleida’s snail pet)
The charitable popular bike ride, the hunt for the Christmas log, birthday parties, multiple photographic sessions, Easter, the Bat Night, etc.
After our visit to the park we realised about some improvements we could demand, so, we would propose adding more trash bins, and we encourage
the whole citizens to come and enjoy LLEIDA’S LUNG and to take care of the unique and the most beautiful spaces in the city. We hope you liked it
and have learnt lots of things.
The most beautiful things are closer than we think.
