Fantasy vs. Reality
Fantasy vs. Reality
Silently, my senses begin to abandon their rationale...who is to say then what is real? The world that we live in, the reality, which we are a part of,
is small and thus limited. That is why, in his infinite capacity for potential improvement, man created fantasy. Fantasy is BIG! To a certain extent it is
more imaginative, more exciting, and more fun. Fantasy is like a lake where man throws all his ideas and dreams, and then he dives on in from the
springboard of imagination. So, jump in to the lake. Why not? Just make sure that when you jump in to the lake you know how to get back from
where you came from. Because, no matter how big a fantasy is, to the point that it somehow changes our perception of what is ... Show more content on

This is fantasy mixing itself with reality, that in the process, it is now becoming hard to determine whether that particular fantasy is still just a
fantasy apart from reality or it is already mistaken to be reality itself. Soft trick of sun and shadow conjures the fruits and foliates into tall towers and
halls, risen from the windy old streets. This would mean the sun playing tricks by producing shadows. Shadows are kind of a pointer to something,
pointing to what is real and yet in itself is not real, just like the imagination. Just as the sun produces the shadow, the mind produces the imagination,
wherein both the shadow and the imagination point to something that is real but again, in themselves alone are not real. And so, the sun playing tricks
would mean conjuring or summoning the fruits and foliates, which refer to little bits of reality and transforming them into tall towers and halls, which
in turn are pinpointing to grand and fantastical images. In other words, simple pieces of reality are then altered into majestic landscapes thus creating a
fantasy. And to enhance the image more, the tall towers and halls are risen from the windy old streets. What do we usually find in windy old streets?
We find dilapidated and out–of–date houses and structures and yet the image of tall towers and halls are found on those very streets. The very

Illusion vs Reality in “Good Country People” Essay
One of Flannery O'Connor's most successful stories, "Good Country People" was published in 1955. "Good Country People" addresses the of good
versus evil, the foolishness of intellectual pretensions, and most importantly the theme of reality versus illusion. An important character Mrs.
Hopewell's daughter Hulga, born as Joy has a Ph. D but seems to have no common sense. She allows her self to be tricked by a "Bible salesman" and
gets her self in to a binding situation. Good Country people deals with illusion vs. reality this is shown when the author discusses Manley Pointer; the
bible sales man, Joy thinking she is ugly, and the fact the Hulga and her mother tend to disagree about Hulga's life decisions. Manley Pointer arrived

Hulga closes her heart just as she rejects her body. This deals with the concept of illusion vs. reality because, Hulga feels that she is ugly therefore
she changes her name to fit the way she feels about herself. Finally the last example of illusion vs. reality is the constant disagreeance between
Hulga and her mother. Hulga's mother, Mrs. Hopewell, convinced that Hulga would have "been better without a useless PhD. degree in
philosophy", has no comprehension of the one true meaning of life to her daughter. Mrs. Hopewell feels that she can not brag on Hulga because,
she sees her daughter as unsuccessful in life due to the meaninglessness of her degree. She is also upset with the fact that Hulga, formally known as
Joy changes her name to better fit her personality. She feels that joy is a beautiful name and that Hulga is opposite from her view of herself. In final
analysis the glass eye relates to the overall theme of the story illusion vs. reality because, the characters in the story see their situations differently
than how they truly are. The main character joy has no common sense and struggles to find her own identity. Another important aspect of illusion vs.
reality is the "bible salesman" who is truly a con artist and get Hulga into a bind. Hulga's mothers opinion of her is also seen to be an illusion to what
it really is. Good Country people deals with the theme illusion vs. reality when the author discusses the "bible salesman, the fact

Reality? What Reality?
Meditation can be a double edged tool. It can reveal the nature of actual reality, but in doing so it also reveals many other states of consciousness
that we experience as real but are not usually aware of their true nature, depending on our present level of awareness. So, while meditation can show
us true reality, in the process we may realize that we have been living in a conceptual representation of reality for perhaps years or even a whole
lifetime.
Many of those who pursue meditation as a means of achieving self realization or self awareness reach a point where they suddenly begin to perceive
on an intuitive level, a truth that is fundamental to their well being and sense of self and security, at which point some choose to continue and some
choose to discontinue the journey of meditation. In fact, this is a well known obstacle in meditation that has to do with the true nature of reality and our
perception or lack of perception of what is real.
Who Or What Is Aware
Suppose we go on an intellectual version of an actual meditation experience. We are sitting in a quiet room surrounded by the familiar objects of our
life. We place a candle on a low table before where we intend to sit and meditate. There is little light in the room and we light the candle before us and
begin to sit quietly slowly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This particular meditation discipline is about achieving enlightenment through insight. Perceiving awareness as a threat is a sure sign that we are not
living in the real world but rather some conceptual reality produced by our own minds ability to imagine and create mental constructs of what is real.
And with a long enough exposure to this, we will of course begin to believe and experience it as real. That is, as long as we don't attempt to develop
any true level of awareness though something like meditation which would eventually reveal the

Macbeth Illusion Vs Reality Essay
The line between an illusion and reality is a very slight. The only way to differentiate between the two is through one's thoughts and perception. One's
own self perception can vary depending on one's circumstances and the way one is raised. This slight gap between illusion and reality is also affected
by one's back story and how an individual is taught to think. In life, as in literature, one's own self perception can affect the way one differentiates
between what is an illusion and what is reality. In the play Macbeth, the author, William Shakespeare reveals how one's own self perception can affect
the way an individual differentiates between illusions and reality. Many characters shift the way they see reality and question the illusions of other
characters nature because of the way they see themself and their past experiences. Macbeth, the story's tragic hero, is a young man who loses his ability

His reality, Macbeth has Lady Macbeth in his ear persuading him to kill the king. His illusion, appears as a dagger floating in front of him, calling
him to kill the King. At this point in the play Macbeth is unsure whether the dagger is an illusion or reality. In the play, Macbeth, Shakespeare shows
Macbeth's struggle to grasp reality through Macbeth questioning the reality of the dagger. "Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? Or
art thou but A dagger of themind" (2.1.45). Shakespeare is showing the reader that Macbeth still has insight as to whether something is an illusion or
reality. But Macbeth does not keep this ability to differentiate through the whole play. After the murder of Duncan, Macbeth starts to lose his sense of

Reality Vs. Illusion In Plato's Allegory Of The Cave
Reality vs. Illusion As implied in the Allegory of the Cave by Plato (380 BC), if a person did not have any prior knowledge of anything, they would
believe anything anyone told them. Obviously, most things in existence are named, and when there is something new humans take it upon themselves
to name it. In this book, the character says about the ignorant prisoners, "Don't you thing that when they named the shadows which they saw passing
they would believe they were naming things?" (Plato, 380, p. 312). Therefore, if a person displayed to another person a thing such as an origami crane
and stated that it was called an orange, the ignorant person would probably believe that the object was truly an orange. In addition, nobody can ever
know the true reality because everything has been named something by other people and nobody questions much of what is already stable. ... Show

If an instructor showed children how to make the crane a certain way, the children would believe they were making a crane, even if it did not look
like one. Also, if there were one child who folded it so it actually looked like a crane, the other children would probably tell him or her that they folded
it wrong. When Plato (380 BC) describes the enlightened prisoner describing the truth to the ignorant prisoners, he writes that, "Wouldn't they all
laugh at him and say he had spoiled his eyesight by going up there" (p.315). All of these are hypotheticals but they are true to human nature. People
are educated by the world around them, and if it is an ignorant world, they will most likely be ignorant people, such as the prisoners of the cave who
did not have any education and did not know

Hamlet Appearance Vs Reality Essay
While Hamlet believes that "[to] be or not to be," (Shakespeare 3.1. 64), is the question, I would argue that a larger question exists that remains
unanswered: what is? How does one differentiate between what is real, and what is an illusion created by the depths of the mind? In The Tragedy of
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, the characters are challenged to constantly distinguish between what is and what seems –– the
presence of reality or appearance. Reality, in a literal sense, is "the state of things as they actually exist," (Fowler); however, it's possible that existing
–– or not existing –– is subjective. Hamlet, the protagonist and tragic hero of the play, interprets a much different reality than the surrounding characters
and devises appearances that drive others away from understanding his truth; in turn, he is made a pawn in the illusions of others, specifically Gertrude,
Claudius, and Laertes, to the point ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Laertes claims, "I am justly killed with mine own treachery," (Shakespeare 5.2. 337). Laertes faces the reality that in his own illusion, he has made
himself, Gertrude, and Hamlet victims in King Claudius's power–seeking plot, realizing "[the] King, the King's to blame," (Shakespeare 5.2. 351).
Hamlet, mourning Gertrude and forgiving Laertes, finally takes action, killing King Claudius by turning his own weapons of destruction against him.

Othello Appearance Vs Reality Analysis
Humans run on desire. Everything they do and stand for is for their wants in some way. That is why humans like to hear, see, and think what seems
fitting to them, and this follows Shakespeare beliefs on illusions regarding humans. He demonstrates this throughout his play Othello, showing that
humans have a tough time of differentiating between illusion and reality, but no matter what happens that truth will always come through.
Othello, one main character in Othello, is one person that is affected by illusions. His beliefs on his true love, Desdemona, are destroyed and
dismantled to where he wishes the death of her. In the beginning of the play Othello's true nature and his love from others is displayed. One man
that thinks highly of Othello is the is the Duke of Venice. It is clear to the Duke that Othello is, "valiant," and the Duke knows he, "must straight
employ [him]," because of the immediate threat of the Ottomans, (I. iii. 56). The Duke choses to do this, because it is clear to him that Othello is a
good man, but also a great soldier. He knows that if he is able to have Othello on his side then he will be able to win any war. Othello is also a man of...

One's desire for a better sense of self–perception has the power to convince themselves that living in a state of illusions is more fulfilling than facing
the reality of their problems. When an individual is faced with the idea that others see them as a negative character, as per human nature, the individual
will turn to their own self–perception to get a better opinion of themselves and, completely ignore their own ability to see the differences between
illusion and reality. As the result of being placed in an unfamiliar environment, surrounded by conflicts that one cannot understand due to human nature,
it is possible for an individual to re–live their own imagination and past successes. In order for one to realize and clear the confusion, they must revisit

control over their themselves. Egeus is trying to force his daughter into loving someone she does not love. Egeus can make his daughter do things she
does not want to but he cannot make her love someone that she does not. In the woods people use magic to make the lovers think they are in love.

Illusion vs. Reality
When thought up of the idea of illusions multiple things come to mind: magic tricks, mind games, and so much more. With such positive outlooks on
illusions it's difficult to see how the use of them could possibly be used in a negative way. Within the play Othello, Shakespeare plays with the idea of
unreliable reality to seek his revenge. Through the misfortunes of lies and gullibility the misunderstanding of illusion and reality soon lead to the tragic
downfall of many.
As soon as the play takes off Iago lets the readers know his true intentions. He states to Roderigo that he is going to be the Moorships biggest mistake
after he found out Othello chose Cassio to be his Lieutenant (I. i. 35). From this information it is gathered that Iago seeks revenge and the use of
illusion vs. reality will make his plans all the more believable. After seen Iago's true colors it's iconic to see how many times he is called by the name
"Honest Iago". This name is an illusion in itself knowing he is anything but honest. Cassio even goes on to say "I never/knew/a Florentine more kind
and honest"(III. i. 43–45). Cassio truly believes his words are humble but only the readers can understand that the only reason Iago is seen as honest is

Iago's entire master plan he never hesitates to wonder if anyone is going to catch on to his schemes, Since Iago sees the moor as a free and open

On a regular day basis, we encounter many individuals and wonder if they are truly what they claim to be. The theme of appearance versus reality is
used in various literature, and is used to determine a person's character in real life. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet characters are based on facade
and the reality is rarely seen. The illusion love shown through Polonius and Claudius. Hamlet's act of antic disposition to fool other characters' contrasts
with Ophelia's madness, and the loyalty of Gertrude changing throughout the play, contrasting to Horatio's loyalty for Hamlet. These elements show
that characters in Hamlet are based on illusions, and their reality is usually hidden throughout the play.

Reality is in some sense dictated by our beliefs and our environment. Before moving on, I need to differentiate between Truth and Reality. There can
be many realities, but there is One Truth. For example, to those who are plugged into the Matrix and not yet aware of it, the Matrix is reality.
However, the Truth is that they are serving as a 120V battery in a pod full of green slime. If I am anorexic, then I see myself as overweight; that
becomes my reality. The Truth is that I am gradually starving myself to death.
The problem, then, is when my reality is not in accord with the Truth. Either I am unaware of the Truth, or I am ignoring the Truth by conscious effort.

If we view Neo as the person rather than the One, and Morpheus as God the Father, we have a nice metaphor for the relationship between God and
man. God desires to have a relationship with us, from before we were born even. He is reaching out to us our whole lives.
When we seek God, he will reveal himself to us. "Seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened..." Notice how Morpheus first contacted
Neo (through Trinity, the Spirit) rather than the other way around. This was done via the computer screen when Neo is first introduced. "Wake up,
Neo! The Matrix has you!" Translated, "wake up, sin has you!" God reaches out to us first.
It is interesting that this scene is followed by "Knock, knock...", then the door to Neo's apartment is opened. This moment is critical because the
invitation is extended to Neo to join the group, and thus "follow the white rabbit." It is this decision that paves the way for Neo to eventually establish
a relationship with Morpheus. When Christ knocks on the door to our hearts, he follows with an invitation to "follow him"! If we do, we will enter

Captain Philips: Reality vs. Movie Excitement
Captured, kidnapped, and rescued, Paul Greengrass knows precisely how to seize his audience's attention. Not only did I watch this movie with my
eyes and mouth wide open, but I kept thinking to myself, "This actually happened in real life!" Little did I know Captain Philips was no hero. Not
only was it his fault the ship was captured from getting too close to the Somalia Coast and ignoring warning emails, but he never truly gave up
himself to the pirates. According to the article "Crew Members: 'Captain Phillips' is One Big Lie," the ship's crew tells Callahan Maureen that the
captain was intransigent, audacious and didn't follow protocol. Although, that is what Hollywood is great at: making heroes and false facts. The real
crew members didn't see Captain Philips as a hero because they believe he put them in the situation in the first place by ignoring the warnings he
received to stay away from the Somalia coast. It made me question if Captain Philips was really the hero Hollywood portrays him to be. Although
he was heroic through the whole event that took place, I believe he wasn't the only one and I understand where the real crew is coming from. The
crew mentions in the article "Captain Philips Is a Lie: Real Captain Is No Hero According to Crew," that the real hero was Chief Engineer Mike
Perry. He was the one who led the crew down stairs and captured the pirate for the exchange for the captain, yet he only had a small role in the movie.

Essay on Appearance Vs. Reality
One of the characteristics of Realism, in American literature at least, is the ironic use of perceptions of "appearance" vs. "reality." With this in mind,
Henry James's "The Real Thing" and "The Beast in the Jungle" are two works wherein such characteristics can be shown to operate as James employs
cleverly woven twists of "appearance" and "reality" in each of the plots.
In James's "The Real Thing," the plot is centered on an unnamed artist and his interactions with two sets of models: the Monarchs (members of genteel
society), and Miss Churm and Oronte (members of the working class). The ironically named Monarchs are a couple who appear as though they have
"ten thousand a year" but whose lives diverge dramatically from the literal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Monarch.
Miss Churm (a phonetically guttural name that is perhaps a word play on "charm" by the author) is a working class native of London and Oronte is an
out–of–work penny ice vendor. James's introduction of Miss Churm and Oronte to the reader is performed with divergent characterizations of
appearance and reality between the two sets of models. While the Monarchs are introduced to the readers in a sterile appearance of "spotless
perfection," and gentility, Miss Churm (a "freckled cockney" who "couldn't spell and loved beer") unceremoniously intrudes into the studio. And
Oronte's introduction leads the artist to conclude that "the fellow's a bankrupt orange–monger ..." – a telling comparison from the artist's first
impression of the Monarchs, when he believed them to be sitters. But the success of Miss Churm and Oronte as models of nobility, compared to the
analogous failure of the Monarchs, attributes to the most ironic point of departure in James's characterizations.
The artist's ability to transform Miss Churm into "everything from a fine lady to a shepherdess," and the Italian Oronte into an Englishman – compared
with his inability to perform the same transformation with the Monarchs – serves as a

Appearance Vs Reality Macbeth
Daniel Webster once said, "The world is governed more by appearances than realities, so that it is fully as necessary to seem to know something as to
know it." What tends to occur is people judge one another based on appearance rather than reality. Consequently, the way one represents themselves is
the way they will be judged. In the tragic play, Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, appearance versus reality is exposed through out the whole
play. Macbeth tells a story of a man who is prophesied from three deceitful witches that tell him that he will become King of Scotland. Trapped by
ambition, Macbeth makes a decision that haunts not only him, but his wife till their death. He then faces the consequences of his actions when he loses

Macbeth is represented throughout the play as both fair but also unjust. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth was an honorable general and stayed
loyal to his king. He was shown as a brave and daring soldier, but it was clear that he lacked confidence. When the witches prophesied that he would
be king, he allowed fate to play itself out. After talking to his wife, Lady Macbeth, she pushed him to do something he probably would have never done
without her influence. She got in his mind and convinced him that killing Duncan, the thane of Cawdor was the only solution. While plotting to
kill Duncan, the whole scenario terrified him. Like every tragic play, his tragic flaw led him into destruction. Throughout the play, Macbeth's true
character is shown. He showed no pity for Banquo or Macduff's family when he murdered them. He completely shifted from a kind general that
cared about his king to a ruthless murderer. After Seyton comes back and alerts Macbeth that his wife has died, Macbeth announces, "...Out, Out,
brief candle" (Shakespeare 5.5. 26). Macbeth uses the candle as a metaphor to describe that life is delicate. Once the candle's flame is out, our life
is nothing and we are nothing. Macbeth thinks life is not important because nothing lasts for an eternity. His character shifted because it seemed to
be in the beginning that he was happy and full of life. His idea of how a man should act motivated his actions. Macbeth's morals had dramatically
changed as well. His outlook on life has changed after he committed all of the murders. Macbeth said in the beginning that he would not try to change
his fate but he killed everyone that got in his way of becoming king. At first he was loyal to the king, he later did everything in his power to kill the
king. Macbeth begins to think that life is pointless and when you die nothing will matter anyway. He ends his soliloquy with two bold words,

Appearance vs. Reality in Hamlet
Gao Xingjian once said, "It's in literature that true life can be found. It's under the mask of fiction that you can tell the truth." A literary work that is
fiction is just an appearance of fiction, which author uses as means to convey the truth about reality. Appearance is nothing but just one's colored
perception. People can appear to be someone they are not to hide their true–self or hide behind the mask of lies to hide the truth. In the play, Hamlet,
Shakespeare reveals a distinction between appearance and reality through manipulation of characters by each other to accomplish their goals.

Final Research: American Reality Show Vs. British Reality Show There was a war between Great Britain and America that ended a long time ago.
Today these two cultures use this historical event as an excuse to argue about two shows on MTV. When the time a person floating the enormous

The Great Gatsby Illusion Vs Reality
The famous Parker Palmer once stated, "I think the pursuit of happiness is the pursuit of reality because illusion never leaves us ultimately happy."
Writings by F. Scott Fitzgerald exemplify illusion versus reality. Fitzgerald reveals the major differences between the two through his characters'
emotions and actions.
Fitzgerald's emphasis on superficial versus real love between the characters prevails. For instance, all of the characters present incredible facades of
success, happiness, and love; however, none of them are truly successful nor happy. Throughout thenovel it becomes evident that the relationship
between Tom and Daisy Buchanan is superficial rather than real love. Raised in a wealthy home, Daisy is comfortable with having... Show more

Fitzgerald portrays the illusions versus reality through the characters and objects within the novel. For example, Tom portrays himself as an
extremely wealthy, powerful man who has a perfect marriage. However, in the novel, Tom retorts, "I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let
Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife" (Fitzgerald 137). Tom refers to the affair Daisy is having with Gatsby which reveals the ill
character of Tom who is a careless coward. In addition, Gatsby creates the illusion that he had a well up bringing and the great stories of how he
got his money. However, in reality Gatsby is named James Gatz, a poor boy from the Midwest who changes his name to become a different person
and create an entirely new image of himself to be a man who wealthy and respected enough to be with Daisy. Last, Fitzgerald creates the illusion that
the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg look out over the Valley of Ashes, resembling the eyes of God. In reality, the billboard is just an abandoned sign
from an optician who since moved his practice away. These illusions give the novel a much deeper meaning and reveal each character's true

Reality Vs. Illusion
"For those in love with an illusion often refuse to accept the reality" by Sanal Edamaruku. Illusions make the reality almost impossible to see, the
theme of illusion vs. reality occurs many times in Fitzgerald's novel. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the reader observes many of
the characters living in an illusionary world, however, through one character, the reader can discern authenticity.
Throughout the novel, the reader perceive Jay Gatsby, as a main and one of the many characters, who are living in an imaginary world, far away from
the the reality. Gatsby, who could not even stay true to himself, changed his identity... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nick's dreams are simple and real, instead of creating an illusionary world around himself, he stays true to himself throughout the novel. He states,
" I decided to go to East and learn the bond business," ( Fitzgerald 3). Nick, simply wants to be in bond business so he can identify himself and stay
honest and true to himself. He is surrounded by all the riches and still he does not relinquish his veracity, in attempt to become affluent. Nick says,
" I am one of few honest people I have ever known," (Fitzgerald 59), the reader observes Nick as one of the most honest person throughout the
novel. At the end of the novel, the reader visually perceives how Nick leaves the East after Gatsby's death, Nick states "After Gatsby's death, East
was hunted for me," ( Fitzgerald 185). Nick thought of East as a place for prosperity but he lefts when he sees the reality of East, a dark place, full
of evil and corruption, where happiness does not exist unless one is living in an illusionary world. All people want is success without caring how to

Appearance Vs Reality Macbeth
Not everyone or everything may appear the way they initially seem to be. Appearance versus reality is observed in everyday life, whether it be in
relationships or in novels. Individuals should keep an open mind and always strive to further examine one's views and perceptions of others. Some
people may appear trustworthy, but in reality are not. It is one's own examinations that will help make these individual determinations. Some people
are quick to judge others, but there are many inner layers to people, and one must willingly be able to peel the layers and go beneath the surface to

Hamlet Appearance Vs Reality
What is appearance versus reality? Something that someone appears to be in person, but in reality they aren't (like having two different characters).
As people we judge things fully on their appearance, but in reality they may be very different then what we perceive them to be. Shakespeare uses
theme appearance versus reality in his plays to show the audience that things will not always be what they seem. By using this theme shakespeare
delves deeper into the darker side of humanity. Like many works of literature at the time, Shakespeare's plays are never what they seem. Appearances
and reality are called into question several times throughout Macbeth and Hamlet. And plays an important role of determining the truth. In the opening

But in reality Claudius is an evil man and is responsible for killing his brother Hamlet's father. King claudius assistant appears to seem to be a vary

Life Of Pi Reality Vs Reality Essay
The novel Life of Pi is all about discerning between fact and belief. But which is reality? Yann Martel, the author of the text, declares that "reality is
an interpretation, a choice of readings, a choice of stories." The definition of reality, therefore, is not events which actually occur, but what is real to an
individual. Every person has a different reality, shaped by their experiences, beliefs, interpretations, readings and stories. In other words, you choose
your reality.
In Life of Pi, Pi is always searching for the "better story". While Pi is describing agnostics, he proclaims that they "lack imagination and miss the
better story" (Martel 64) in life. He later inquires of the men interviewing him, "'Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without
animals?'" (Martel 317) after recounting two versions of his 227 days at sea. The "better story" is the story which opens up the mind, the story which
provides you with a new way of observing the world. Being able to see the better story is an act of interpretation and creation. It is how we view the
world and generate meaning from it. In this case, the better story becomes your reality because it is what is real to you. ... Show more content on

Examples Of Illusions Vs Reality In Othello
Ever since we were young, we were told about make–believe things such as Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy. When we found out they didn't exist, we
were probably devastated but it didn't ruin our lives. It's easy to believe untrue things and often times people say, "ignorance is bliss," but believing
something that isn't true can do more damage than good. Shakespeare's Othello is a prime example of how falling to the belief of illusions versus
reality is ultimately harmful to people. There are many times throughout Othello where Iago tells lies and people believe him. Everyone thinks Iago
is an honest man. That's made especially clear when Othello, who has a good reputation, plainly states, "Iago is most honest," (2. 3. 7). The readers
know, however, that Iago is far from honest. In front of Othello, Desdemona, and others, it appears Iago loves and appreciates Othello but we know
this is not true because Iago clearly, and honestly, states, "I follow him to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Roderigo is getting suspicious of Iago, so this will allow Iago to frame Roderigo and kill him off (5. 1. 71–73). Shortly after Roderigo is killed, Othello
yells at Desdemona for cheating on him and despite her claiming she didn't, he kills her. (5. 2. 99–104). All of this death and violence is happening
because of illusions Iago has set up. If Iago was honest, none of this would be a problem. The illusions Othello has been fed are so dangerous that he
has become a different, violent, murderous man, and he has yet to even discover the truth. Being unaware of reality and, on the flip side, knowing of
reality but not being familiar with the lies, can get someone seriously hurt. Desdemona didn't know of the illusions Othello believed, so she got killed.
Once Othello realized he had been tricked, he felt the extreme weight and guilt of killing the love of his life, and couldn't take it, so he killed himself

Extended response:
How is Ultimate Reality viewed differently from and Eastern and Western Perspective?
Ultimate Reality in religion is viewed differently when comparing Eastern to Western beliefs, but there are some similarities: both want to achieve
something in the afterlife.
In Western religions such as Catholicism and Islam, the belief of Ultimate Reality is that there is a God and he is transcendent and monotheistic.. In
addition, there is also the belief of an evil existence or commonly known as the "devil". In the extract from the Catholic Bible, it states "No one has
seen God" and that "in him was life, and the life was the light of the men," which indicates their God is powerful enough and on another level

Macbeth Appearance Vs Reality Research Paper
In today's society, the concept of appearance versus reality is one that is greatly used in societies, media and relationships. Many people are
perceived to have two faces or sides to them, one for use in public settings and one for use in private settings. However, this has not only been used
in today's society but for much of history. William Shakespeare was a constant user of this theme in his famous plays. In the literary work of Macbeth
by Shakespeare, the theme of appearance versus reality was vital in the development of the plot and the perception of the characters of Macbeth, Lady
Macbeth, and the three witches. It was used to develop and enhance the plot of this tragic story, of a nobleman with a deadly ambition. Three very

Othello Illusion Vs Reality Essay
Every day we are constantly meeting new people and with meeting new people comes new personalities. Some may be our friend while others may be
hypocritical. But at the end true colors are revealed. Illusion verses reality is one of the many themes expressed in Othello by William Shakespeare.
There are many examples shown through the character Othello where the misconception of illusion and reality leads to misfortune. This is displayed
when Othello develops an outrageous jealousy due to Iago manipulating him, or when there's irrelevant hatred created between Othello and Cassio
because of these manipulations. When Iago's schemes work it fools Othello's gullible personality, resulting in him doubting his love for Desdemona.

Due to Iago's perception of Othello being naГЇve, Iago uses his phenomenal understanding of the human psyche as his ability to orchestrate
pre–planned scenarios. Iago is successfully and carefully able to manipulate Othello's thoughts into thinking Desdemona has been unfaithful and
that it was false love. "I called my love false love, but what he said then?" (IV, iii, 59) This is significant because Desdemona is beginning to realize
that the love Othello had for her must have been false she's worried that Othello will leave her. Due to Othello's inability to differentiate between
delusion and reality it's bringing forth disaster leading to their relationship suffering. Othello being able to trust people easily allowed Iago's words to
manipulate him into making a tremendously poor decision which was killing Desdemona. "Put out the light, and then put out the light," (V,ii, 7) This
quote is paramount because Othello blows out the candle just before he strangles Desdemona which symbolizes Desdemona's fragile life and because
he is so manipulated by Iago there is no turning back and he is ready to kill her. Othello muses that the difference between Desdemona's life and a
candle's light is that he can put out and relight the candle but he cannot bring Desdemona back to life. The thought of not being able to bring
Desdemona back to life did not stop him from murdering Desdemona,

To quench his desire for information, Polonius uses manipulation and dishonesty, while hiding behind his best appearance. In the beginning scenes
of the play, Polonius is supporting his son, Laertes, in his departure to France; during their goodbyes, Polonius gives Laertes shallow advice on
how he should behave. With these actions, Polonius is displaying his paternal role excellently, he is looking out for his son such as any good father
would. What Laertes, along with other onlookers cannot realize is Polonius will send his servant, Reynaldo, to obtain all the information on Laertes'

earlier displays of affection towards his son, he is able to use dishonest methods of spying and spreading false information (can taint Laertes' social

Another aspect that is falsely portrayed is the representation of love and sex. This show sends several different messages about love and sex, some of

break up with the woman for him, since he had to leave. In reality, most people like to believe that sex is a sign of love and, although there are also
many exceptions to this rule, many still try and live by it. Today there are also many fears about AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases being spread.
The characters on "Friends" seem to be completely immune and ignorant of sexually transmitted diseases while having sex with many different
partners. Finally, another aspect that is falsely portrayed in this show is homosexuality. It seems that almost everywhere the main characters go there
are homosexuals that are either hanging around the main characters or are attracted to them. In reality, the homosexual population only makes up
around 10–12% of the U.S. population, so it would be unlikely that the main characters would run into that many homosexuals in the small areas where
they live.
The next show that I have researched is the CBS sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond". Even though this show falls into the same category as
"Friends", the shows are very different. One difference is that the main character in "Everybody Loves Raymond" is married. On "Friends", all of the
main characters are single, and they have sexual relations more frequently. "Everybody Loves Raymond" does not present as much sex as most sitcoms

Hamlet Appearance Vs Reality Research Paper
Appearance Vs Reality
Anonymity is something that makes mankind feel quite powerful, and in some cases it is to benefit us in certain situations. Shakespeare's Hamlet is
known as one of the greatest plays of all time and, Appearance vs. reality is a major theme that is consistent throughout this play. In the playHamlet
there are characters who are behaving and acting a certain way, while in reality their objective and intentions are the direct opposite. Some of these
characters do not realize this until the end of the play. Most of these characters appear to be candid and sincere throughout the play, while in reality
they appear to be the complete opposite by the end of the play. Shakespeare has used five character throughout the play, in ... Show more content on

He also makes it seem like he is saddened due to his brother's, former king Hamlet's death. Moreover Claudius tries to show that he is concerned
about Hamlet and Gertrude and that he cares about them. "Though yet of Hamlet our dear brother's death The memory be green, and that it us befitted
To bear our hearts in grief, and our whole kingdom To be contracted in one brow of woe," (Hamlet 1.2.1–4). On the contrary to what he does and how
he acts, Claudius is an evil person & he is the one who killed his own brother, King Hamlet. Claudius also lies about the fact that he cares for
Hamlet and Gertrude, He only does that because he wants the throne and he needs Gertrude's support. Claudius tried to get rid of Hamlet as soon as
he realized that Hamlet is looking for an answer. "England; for like the hectic in my blood he rages, and thou must cure me. Till I know 'tis done..."
(Hamlet 4.3.69–71). Furthermore Claudius acted like he was innocent and that he was disappointed about his brother's death while having a chat with
Hamlet, While in reality he faked his sympathy and innocence just because he was afraid that Hamlet might find out the truth that he killed his

Illusion vs. Reality A Streetcar Named Desire Essay
Illusion vs. Reality A Streetcar Named Desire Tennessee Williams uses the constant battle between illusion and reality as a theme throughout his
play A Streetcar Named Desire. Many use illusion to escape the reality they are living in. This theme is present in all of his characters in different
ways. Each character is shown to live their life in either the way of illusion or reality. Harold Mitchell, also known as Mitch buys into Blanches
illusions. He is overtaken by her charm, but in the end finally faces reality. Stella who is Blanches sister is always wishing for everything to be
perfect with her and Stanley even though he abuses her. She overlooks Stanley's downfalls to escape her reality. Blanche is the center of all illusion....

In all of these instances illusion plays a key role in a way for the characters to do away with the lives they do not want to be living. Although, not
all characters are living in illusion Tennessee Williams does include some who face reality. Stanley Kowalski, Stella's husband, is strictly a reality
based character. He is constantly looking into Blanches real past. He sees through all of her illusions and wants the truth to things. This is proved
in the rape scene when Stanley turns Blanche into the victim as she had made herself out to be throughout the play. Eunice the character who
lives in the upstairs of the house with the Kowalski's. She knows how untrue Stanley is to Stella and is always telling her to face reality and not
put up with how she is treated like garbage from him. Towards the end of the play Mitch finally overlooks Blanches illusions and begins to
question her by telling her how he has never seen her in the light and asks her age. Mitch's sick mother helps to keep him focused in the real things
in his life by having him put aside all other things to take care of the one who cared for him. Escaping your reality and living in an illusion world
will leave you blind to the things around you. In some cases, if you are strong enough to withhold from the illusions around you, you may end up in
the reality, like Mitch. Both Stella and Blanche found it best in their minds to live in a fantasy but if you live in it too

Fantasy Vs. Reality

  • 1. Fantasy vs. Reality Fantasy vs. Reality Silently, my senses begin to abandon their rationale...who is to say then what is real? The world that we live in, the reality, which we are a part of, is small and thus limited. That is why, in his infinite capacity for potential improvement, man created fantasy. Fantasy is BIG! To a certain extent it is more imaginative, more exciting, and more fun. Fantasy is like a lake where man throws all his ideas and dreams, and then he dives on in from the springboard of imagination. So, jump in to the lake. Why not? Just make sure that when you jump in to the lake you know how to get back from where you came from. Because, no matter how big a fantasy is, to the point that it somehow changes our perception of what is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is fantasy mixing itself with reality, that in the process, it is now becoming hard to determine whether that particular fantasy is still just a fantasy apart from reality or it is already mistaken to be reality itself. Soft trick of sun and shadow conjures the fruits and foliates into tall towers and halls, risen from the windy old streets. This would mean the sun playing tricks by producing shadows. Shadows are kind of a pointer to something, pointing to what is real and yet in itself is not real, just like the imagination. Just as the sun produces the shadow, the mind produces the imagination, wherein both the shadow and the imagination point to something that is real but again, in themselves alone are not real. And so, the sun playing tricks would mean conjuring or summoning the fruits and foliates, which refer to little bits of reality and transforming them into tall towers and halls, which in turn are pinpointing to grand and fantastical images. In other words, simple pieces of reality are then altered into majestic landscapes thus creating a fantasy. And to enhance the image more, the tall towers and halls are risen from the windy old streets. What do we usually find in windy old streets? We find dilapidated and out–of–date houses and structures and yet the image of tall towers and halls are found on those very streets. The very presence of tall towers and halls ... • 2. Illusion vs Reality in “Good Country People” Essay One of Flannery O'Connor's most successful stories, "Good Country People" was published in 1955. "Good Country People" addresses the of good versus evil, the foolishness of intellectual pretensions, and most importantly the theme of reality versus illusion. An important character Mrs. Hopewell's daughter Hulga, born as Joy has a Ph. D but seems to have no common sense. She allows her self to be tricked by a "Bible salesman" and gets her self in to a binding situation. Good Country people deals with illusion vs. reality this is shown when the author discusses Manley Pointer; the bible sales man, Joy thinking she is ugly, and the fact the Hulga and her mother tend to disagree about Hulga's life decisions. Manley Pointer arrived one day ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hulga closes her heart just as she rejects her body. This deals with the concept of illusion vs. reality because, Hulga feels that she is ugly therefore she changes her name to fit the way she feels about herself. Finally the last example of illusion vs. reality is the constant disagreeance between Hulga and her mother. Hulga's mother, Mrs. Hopewell, convinced that Hulga would have "been better without a useless PhD. degree in philosophy", has no comprehension of the one true meaning of life to her daughter. Mrs. Hopewell feels that she can not brag on Hulga because, she sees her daughter as unsuccessful in life due to the meaninglessness of her degree. She is also upset with the fact that Hulga, formally known as Joy changes her name to better fit her personality. She feels that joy is a beautiful name and that Hulga is opposite from her view of herself. In final analysis the glass eye relates to the overall theme of the story illusion vs. reality because, the characters in the story see their situations differently than how they truly are. The main character joy has no common sense and struggles to find her own identity. Another important aspect of illusion vs. reality is the "bible salesman" who is truly a con artist and get Hulga into a bind. Hulga's mothers opinion of her is also seen to be an illusion to what it really is. Good Country people deals with the theme illusion vs. reality when the author discusses the "bible salesman, the fact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Appearance Vs Reality Research Paper Reality? What Reality? Meditation can be a double edged tool. It can reveal the nature of actual reality, but in doing so it also reveals many other states of consciousness that we experience as real but are not usually aware of their true nature, depending on our present level of awareness. So, while meditation can show us true reality, in the process we may realize that we have been living in a conceptual representation of reality for perhaps years or even a whole lifetime. Many of those who pursue meditation as a means of achieving self realization or self awareness reach a point where they suddenly begin to perceive on an intuitive level, a truth that is fundamental to their well being and sense of self and security, at which point some choose to continue and some choose to discontinue the journey of meditation. In fact, this is a well known obstacle in meditation that has to do with the true nature of reality and our perception or lack of perception of what is real. Who Or What Is Aware Suppose we go on an intellectual version of an actual meditation experience. We are sitting in a quiet room surrounded by the familiar objects of our life. We place a candle on a low table before where we intend to sit and meditate. There is little light in the room and we light the candle before us and begin to sit quietly slowly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This particular meditation discipline is about achieving enlightenment through insight. Perceiving awareness as a threat is a sure sign that we are not living in the real world but rather some conceptual reality produced by our own minds ability to imagine and create mental constructs of what is real. And with a long enough exposure to this, we will of course begin to believe and experience it as real. That is, as long as we don't attempt to develop any true level of awareness though something like meditation which would eventually reveal the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Macbeth Illusion Vs Reality Essay The line between an illusion and reality is a very slight. The only way to differentiate between the two is through one's thoughts and perception. One's own self perception can vary depending on one's circumstances and the way one is raised. This slight gap between illusion and reality is also affected by one's back story and how an individual is taught to think. In life, as in literature, one's own self perception can affect the way one differentiates between what is an illusion and what is reality. In the play Macbeth, the author, William Shakespeare reveals how one's own self perception can affect the way an individual differentiates between illusions and reality. Many characters shift the way they see reality and question the illusions of other characters nature because of the way they see themself and their past experiences. Macbeth, the story's tragic hero, is a young man who loses his ability to differentiate between an illusion and reality resulting in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His reality, Macbeth has Lady Macbeth in his ear persuading him to kill the king. His illusion, appears as a dagger floating in front of him, calling him to kill the King. At this point in the play Macbeth is unsure whether the dagger is an illusion or reality. In the play, Macbeth, Shakespeare shows Macbeth's struggle to grasp reality through Macbeth questioning the reality of the dagger. "Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but A dagger of themind" (2.1.45). Shakespeare is showing the reader that Macbeth still has insight as to whether something is an illusion or reality. But Macbeth does not keep this ability to differentiate through the whole play. After the murder of Duncan, Macbeth starts to lose his sense of reality as his self perception and ego starts to ... • 5. Reality Vs. Illusion In Plato's Allegory Of The Cave Reality vs. Illusion As implied in the Allegory of the Cave by Plato (380 BC), if a person did not have any prior knowledge of anything, they would believe anything anyone told them. Obviously, most things in existence are named, and when there is something new humans take it upon themselves to name it. In this book, the character says about the ignorant prisoners, "Don't you thing that when they named the shadows which they saw passing they would believe they were naming things?" (Plato, 380, p. 312). Therefore, if a person displayed to another person a thing such as an origami crane and stated that it was called an orange, the ignorant person would probably believe that the object was truly an orange. In addition, nobody can ever know the true reality because everything has been named something by other people and nobody questions much of what is already stable. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If an instructor showed children how to make the crane a certain way, the children would believe they were making a crane, even if it did not look like one. Also, if there were one child who folded it so it actually looked like a crane, the other children would probably tell him or her that they folded it wrong. When Plato (380 BC) describes the enlightened prisoner describing the truth to the ignorant prisoners, he writes that, "Wouldn't they all laugh at him and say he had spoiled his eyesight by going up there" (p.315). All of these are hypotheticals but they are true to human nature. People are educated by the world around them, and if it is an ignorant world, they will most likely be ignorant people, such as the prisoners of the cave who did not have any education and did not know ... • 7. Hamlet Appearance Vs Reality Essay While Hamlet believes that "[to] be or not to be," (Shakespeare 3.1. 64), is the question, I would argue that a larger question exists that remains unanswered: what is? How does one differentiate between what is real, and what is an illusion created by the depths of the mind? In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, the characters are challenged to constantly distinguish between what is and what seems –– the presence of reality or appearance. Reality, in a literal sense, is "the state of things as they actually exist," (Fowler); however, it's possible that existing –– or not existing –– is subjective. Hamlet, the protagonist and tragic hero of the play, interprets a much different reality than the surrounding characters and devises appearances that drive others away from understanding his truth; in turn, he is made a pawn in the illusions of others, specifically Gertrude, Claudius, and Laertes, to the point ... Laertes faces the reality that in his own illusion, he has made himself, Gertrude, and Hamlet victims in King Claudius's power–seeking plot, realizing "[the] King, the King's to blame," (Shakespeare 5.2. 351). That is why humans like to hear, see, and think what seems fitting to them, and this follows Shakespeare beliefs on illusions regarding humans. He demonstrates this throughout his play Othello, showing that humans have a tough time of differentiating between illusion and reality, but no matter what happens that truth will always come through. With this in mind, Henry James's "The Real Thing" and "The Beast in the Jungle" are two works wherein such characteristics can be shown to operate as James employs cleverly woven twists of "appearance" and "reality" in each of the plots. In James's "The Real Thing," the plot is centered on an unnamed artist and his interactions with two sets of models: the Monarchs (members of genteel society), and Miss Churm and Oronte (members of the working class). While the Monarchs are introduced to the readers in a sterile appearance of "spotless perfection," and gentility, Miss Churm (a "freckled cockney" who "couldn't spell and loved beer") unceremoniously intrudes into the studio. And Oronte's introduction leads the artist to conclude that "the fellow's a bankrupt orange–monger ..." – a telling comparison from the artist's first impression of the Monarchs, when he believed them to be sitters. But the success of Miss Churm and Oronte as models of nobility, compared to the analogous failure of the Monarchs, attributes to the most ironic point of departure in James's characterizations. The artist's ability to transform Miss Churm into "everything from a fine lady to a shepherdess," and the Italian Oronte into an Englishman – compared with his inability to perform the same transformation with the Monarchs – serves as a ... What tends to occur is people judge one another based on appearance rather than reality. Consequently, the way one represents themselves is the way they will be judged. In the tragic play, Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, appearance versus reality is exposed through out the whole play. After talking to his wife, Lady Macbeth, she pushed him to do something he probably would have never done without her influence. She got in his mind and convinced him that killing Duncan, the thane of Cawdor was the only solution. While plotting to kill Duncan, the whole scenario terrified him. Like every tragic play, his tragic flaw led him into destruction. Throughout the play, Macbeth's true character is shown. He showed no pity for Banquo or Macduff's family when he murdered them. He completely shifted from a kind general that cared about his king to a ruthless murderer. After Seyton comes back and alerts Macbeth that his wife has died, Macbeth announces, "...Out, Out, brief candle" (Shakespeare 5.5. 26). Macbeth uses the candle as a metaphor to describe that life is delicate. Once the candle's flame is out, our life is nothing and we are nothing. Macbeth thinks life is not important because nothing lasts for an eternity. His character shifted because it seemed to be in the beginning that he was happy and full of life. His idea of how a man should act motivated his actions. Macbeth's morals had dramatically changed as well. His outlook on life has changed after he committed all of the murders. Macbeth said in the beginning that he would not try to change his fate but he killed everyone that got in his way of becoming king. • 24. Life Of Pi Reality Vs Reality Essay The novel Life of Pi is all about discerning between fact and belief. But which is reality? Yann Martel, the author of the text, declares that "reality is an interpretation, a choice of readings, a choice of stories." The definition of reality, therefore, is not events which actually occur, but what is real to an individual. Every person has a different reality, shaped by their experiences, beliefs, interpretations, readings and stories. In other words, you choose your reality. In Life of Pi, Pi is always searching for the "better story". While Pi is describing agnostics, he proclaims that they "lack imagination and miss the better story" (Martel 64) in life. He later inquires of the men interviewing him, "'Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals?'" (Martel 317) after recounting two versions of his 227 days at sea. The "better story" is the story which opens up the mind, the story which provides you with a new way of observing the world. Ultimate Reality in religion is viewed differently when comparing Eastern to Western beliefs, but there are some similarities: both want to achieve something in the afterlife. In Western religions such as Catholicism and Islam, the belief of Ultimate Reality is that there is a God and he is transcendent and monotheistic.. In addition, there is also the belief of an evil existence or commonly known as the "devil". • 30. Macbeth Appearance Vs Reality Research Paper In today's society, the concept of appearance versus reality is one that is greatly used in societies, media and relationships. Many people are perceived to have two faces or sides to them, one for use in public settings and one for use in private settings. However, this has not only been used in today's society but for much of history. William Shakespeare was a constant user of this theme in his famous plays. In the literary work of Macbeth by Shakespeare, the theme of appearance versus reality was vital in the development of the plot and the perception of the characters of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the three witches. It was used to develop and enhance the plot of this tragic story, of a nobleman with a deadly ambition. But at the end true colors are revealed. Illusion verses reality is one of the many themes expressed in Othello by William Shakespeare. There are many examples shown through the character Othello where the misconception of illusion and reality leads to misfortune. This is displayed when Othello develops an outrageous jealousy due to Iago manipulating him, or when there's irrelevant hatred created between Othello and Cassio because of these manipulations. When Iago's schemes work it fools Othello's gullible personality, resulting in him doubting his love for Desdemona. William Shakespeare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to Iago's perception of Othello being naГЇve, Iago uses his phenomenal understanding of the human psyche as his ability to orchestrate pre–planned scenarios. Iago is successfully and carefully able to manipulate Othello's thoughts into thinking Desdemona has been unfaithful and that it was false love. "I called my love false love, but what he said then?" (IV, iii, 59) This is significant because Desdemona is beginning to realize that the love Othello had for her must have been false she's worried that Othello will leave her. Due to Othello's inability to differentiate between delusion and reality it's bringing forth disaster leading to their relationship suffering. Othello being able to trust people easily allowed Iago's words to manipulate him into making a tremendously poor decision which was killing Desdemona. "Put out the light, and then put out the light," (V,ii, 7) This quote is paramount because Othello blows out the candle just before he strangles Desdemona which symbolizes Desdemona's fragile life and because he is so manipulated by Iago there is no turning back and he is ready to kill her. Othello muses that the difference between Desdemona's life and a candle's light is that he can put out and relight the candle but he cannot bring Desdemona back to life. As soon as Polonius hears about Hamlet's mad actions towards Ophelia, he wishes to prove Hamlet's madness is due to heartbreak.
