The opening case, NBA Teams Make a Slam–dunk with Information Technology, shows students
that even the professional sports industry has embraced technology as a way to enhance their
employees' performance and increase their competitive advantage. Students will start to become
familiar with the idea that many different kinds of businesses have had to change the way they
operate, even the National Basketball Association (NBA). Their new emphasis is on using the
Internet and information technology to mine statistical data and turn it into useful information. The
challenges facing the NBA show why information systems are so essential today. The NBA is a
business as well as a sport, and it needs to help its member teams stay in business and increase their
revenues.
Section 1.1, "The Role of Information Systems in Business Today", gives students a feel for the
importance of information systems in business today and how they have transformed businesses on
the world stage. A good discussion of the six important business objectives outlined in this section
allows the instructor and students to openly discuss why businesses have become so dependent on
information systems today and the importance of these systems for the survival of a firm. Stress to
students that information systems are not a luxury. In most businesses they are the core to survival.
This would be a good time to ask students to discuss how their own schools are using

tuned business processes and information systems that simultaneously promote agility, efficiency,
and quality. It can respond instantly to customers and changes in the marketplace as events unfold,
while working closely with suppliers and retailers. The experience of Toyota and other companies

It seems like every week we hear about thousands and thousands of people losing their jobs. Back in
the 1980s most of the job losses were in the blue–collar sector. In the 1990s it seems many of the
cuts were made in the white–collar, management jobs. Why? Think about it. Technology, to a large
extent, has driven organizations to change the way they operate and that includes the way they
manage. We're going to take an in–depth look at how organizations work and how they've been
transformed by technology on the world stage.
Information systems are the foundation for conducting business today. In many industries, survival
and even existence is difficult without extensive use of information technology. No longer can we
imagine going to work and conducting business without them. As a society we have come to rely
extensively on the use of information appliances such as cell phones, BlackBerrys, handhelds, and
other hardware. Communicating and conducting business is increasingly being carried out through
the use of e–mail, online conferencing, and international teleconferencing over the Internet have all
become essential tools of business.
GLOBALIZATION OPPORTUNITIES
Next time you purchase a product, any product, look at the fine print and see where it's made. It
could be China, or the Philippines, or a South American company, or even in the United States. You

Because of their priority in modern societies, Information Technologies have reached a state of high
priority in education, too. Recently, contributions of information technologies to education have
been among the mostly emphasized subjects (Webber, 2003; Flanagan&Jacopsen, 2003; Pelgrum,
2001; Yuen, Law&Wong, 2003). For this reason, big investment plans about the use of information
systems have been put into action all over the world (Yuen, Law&Wong, 2003; Pelgrum,2001).
The U.S. Department of Education says, "As a teacher, you and the children's parents and caregivers
are partners in helping to get the children ready for future school success. Good communication
with parents and caregivers can build support for and strengthen the important work that you are
doing in the classroom." There are a variety of methods that early childhood teachers can use to
effectively communicate with parents Newsletters, daily notes, bulletin boards, parent teacher
conferences and a few positive words can provide the kind of ongoing communication necessary to
help prepare children for future success. ( Charlina Strwart. 2008. )
But we can imagine what communication could be happened among early childhood teachers and
parents without information system. A preschool educator can communicate with parents through a
classroom newsletter, daily progress notes and classroom bulletin boards. But teachers needs extra
resource and also time consuming to draft, taking print out or

The merged company adopted primarily the simple, flexible information systems and business
processes of America West. It eliminated systems and business processes for carrying hazardous
materials and handling unaccompanied minors on connecting flights because their costs were too
high relative to the benefits they provided. The company only retained a few of the old US Airways'
processes and systems, such as an application for determining where and when to purchase fuel or
check–in applications to support international routes. The new US Airways is now the fifth–largest
carrier in the United States and the world's largest low–cost airline. Will it be successful? It's still
too early to tell. It cost around $75 to $80 million to integrate the information system applications

1.0 Introduction 2.1 Background of the Study
It all started when four visionaries conceptualized setting up a training center to fill very specific
manpower needs.
It was in the early '80s when Augusto C. Lagman, Herman T. Gamboa, Benjamin A. Santos, and
Edgar H. Sarte – four entrepreneurs came together to set up Systems Technology Institute (STI), a
training center that delivers basic programming education to professionals and students who want to
learn this new skill.
Systems Technology Institute's name came from countless brainstorming sessions among the
founders, perhaps from Sarte's penchant for three–letter acronyms from the companies he managed
at the time.
The first two schools were inaugurated in August 21, 1983 in Buendia, ... Show more content on

Information Systems For International Students
Since all of us in our group are international students and a few of us are in our first semester at
Swinburne, it was almost impossible for us to find an Information Systems Manager and would like
to thank Jason for leading us to Mr. Mim Saznus. We understand that we are required to draw a
direct correlation between what we've learnt in lectures and textbooks and see if we could relate it to
challenges that Information Systems Managers face in the real world or see how much of a gap we
have between what we learn and what actually happens in the corporate world. We would like to
extrapolate inputs received from Mim during the interview in our research report and build on the
points that he has made.
Mr. Saznus was gracious enough to spare some time for an interview and we had a few great
learnings and insights into the Information Systems space. He isn't an Information Systems Manager
however has spent over 6 years in multiple industries very closely related to Information Systems
and Information Technology. Mim completed his Masters in Information Technology with a
specialization in Information Systems from our very own Swinburne University and is originally
from Bangladesh.
He started his journey in the Information Technology space by working as a Solutions Analyst for
the largest telecommunications equipment maker in the world, Huawei Technologies for over 2
years and then went on to pursue his Masters in Swinburne University. He was also a part of an

Define business profiles, processes, and modeling..
A business profile is an overview that defines a company's overall functions, processes,
organization, products, services, customers, suppliers, competitors, constraints, and future direction.
A business process describes specific events, tasks, and desired results. To understand a company's
operations, systems analysts first develop a business profile and then create a series of business
models. A business model graphically represents business functions that consist of business
processes such as sales, accounting, and purchasing that perform specific tasks. (Pages 10 –11)
3. Identify the main components of an information system, and describe the system's stakeholders.
An information system has five key components: hardware, software, data, processes, and people.
People who have an interest in an information system are called stakeholders. Stakeholder groups
include the management group responsible for the system; the users, sometimes called end users,
inside and outside the company who will interact with the system; and IT staff members, such as
systems analysts, programmers, and network administrators who develop and support the system
(Pages 8–10)
4. Explain the difference between vertical and horizontal systems packages.
A horizontal system is a basic system, such as an inventory or payroll program, that can be adapted
for use in many companies. A vertical system is designed to meet the

Identify the key factors that help ensure the information required for the project is gathered
successfully.
Information–gathering techniques are the core of systems analysis. According to Valacich "At the
outset, you must collect information about the information systems that are currently in use. You
need to find out how users would like to improve the current systems and organizational operations
with new or replacement information systems." (p. 126). The first information–gathering technique
would be individual interviews. Each interview should be well planned out. It should be scheduled
when the interviewee has time and the intention of the interview should be explained beforehand.
An interview guide or checklist should be created for each interview. During the interview ask both
open–ended and close–ended questions, listen closely to what the interviewee has to say, and take
notes during the interview. Interview a wide range of personnel from everyday users to
management.
Another information–gathering technique is directly observetion of the users in the current HR
system. By observing users using the current system different issues with the system can be seen
that may have been missed in an interview. Havelka says "these observations will provide a more
accurate depiction of operations, requirements, and procedures within the company" (April 25,
2002).
Analyzing business documents is yet another information–gathering technique. Documents such as

Emerging technology is a term that is utilized to describe technology that is or will be developed
within the next few years. As a result, these technologies are of great interest to many individuals
and organizations. For example, how the technology will be exploited will be dependent on the
characteristics and the usage of the technology.
The increased use of information and information systems has also created an increased dependency
on this technology. The development of the personal computer in the late 1970's – early 1980's in

In the world today, technology is further developing every day. With all of the advancements in
technology, there is going to be a need for up and coming computer and information system
managers (CIS manager). So if one has discovered that becoming a computer and information
system manager is the career that one would like to pursue after graduating college, they will have
to understand all there is to know about this career choice.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, the official definition of a CIS manager's job is
to "plan, coordinate, and direct computer–related activities in an organization." (U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics). Furthermore, a manager of this field will work for an organization and will be
responsible for that organization's computer system needs (McKay, Dawn R.). In order to meet the
needs of the company's computer system, a CIS manager will have to be familiar with the benefits
and limitations of different types of computer hardware, software, and programs (Education Portal).
Being familiar with this information will allow the potential CIS manager to recommend
improvements for the company. Also with this knowledge, they will then help design, purchase, and
install the software that would best suit the company's needs. Another duty requirement for this
career is to

Information Literacy and Scholarship, Practice, and Leadership in IT Management
R. Dannels
University of Phoenix
IT (Information Technology) management entails all the routine issues faced by any type of business
manager in addition to the issues of software development, technology purchasing (not necessarily
physical items), systems integration, the limits of technology and the related budgetary issues.
General information literacy is important for any level of IT manager, as he or she needs to
communicate successfully using many different modes, media, and technology with all types of IT
workers, upper management, and technology product vendors. IT management also entails
leadership of projects or departments. Information ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sheer volume of information of all types is ever increasing, making the job of IT manager more
difficult. To remain competent, IT managers must keep up with the latest trends and new
technologies. The evaluation of new technology is another skill related to information literacy, since
the information describing such technology can take many forms. The best IT managers are highly
skilled in such evaluations. These effective managers seem to be rare, as found in Li (2009). That
study found that to deal with the difficulties of IT management, many organizations used
encroachment, to save face for executives by simplifying and deflecting harmful results and
analysis. This spreads the managerial blame and deals with the well documented fact (every
computer science student is taught this) that over 60% of all technology projects fail and software
development projects in particular fail even more frequently. The reasons for the failure of such
projects include the incompetence of IT management (Toader et al., 2010). This is increasingly
exemplified by the inability to communicate effectively with workers of foreign origin and incorrect
evaluations of technology. The lost revenue of software projects is a huge number and that problem
is not getting better. Since dealing with cross cultural management and the evaluation of new
technology are skills learned in information literacy, the lack of formal information literacy classes

CHAPTER I
RESEARCH PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION Notably, student information system or SIS incurs such application software
designed for educational establishments to manage student data. Student information systems
provide capabilities for entering student test and other assessment scores, building student
schedules, tracking student attendance as well as managing many other student–related data needs
within the institution university. Thus, many of these systems applied in the Philippines can be
scaled to different levels of activity and can be configured by their home institutions to meet local
needs. Moreover, before universities have created their own bespoke student record systems, but

It will be easier for them to access and store the information of the students through the system and
have own privacy and security to there information. It is also possible to the school to attract
students because it has well–organized system.
To the school. The system will be very useful to the school it can save more time in store and
prepare information in the system also less effort.
To the future researchers. Those who take on a similar research, this study will persuade them to
maintain and go on with more analysis on the same study.

The Markdown Optimizer "stores the previous recommendation for each item in each individual
store so that it can evaluate past results and then produce recommendations for the closeout of the
current cycle." Because of the improved system, ShopKo saw a 25 percent increase in its gross
margin, decreased payroll costs by 24 percent, and the percentage of unsold goods was reduced
from 7 percent to 2 percent.
As the case scenario indicates, Pamida's strategy is to maintain a high in–stock–rate. However,
Pamida's traditional system did not help the company achieve its objective. Stores were out of stock
on items, while the same items were sitting in Pamida's warehouses. Although Pamida changed its
warehouse from a flow–through facility to a full–service distribution center, it did not update or
replace its warehousing software. According to Pamida's CIO Dan Nicklen, the reason the
warehouse management software was not updated was because "the software had been working fine
under the old distribution system." As a result of the inadequate warehouse management
information system, bottlenecks occurred, earnings declined in the first nine months of 2001, and
ShopKo lost $6.7 million in overall revenue. As a result of the product supply shortage for the 2000
holiday season, estimated sales losses were $5 million, and lawsuits were filed by shareholders. It is
obvious that Pamida's current technology did not support the transition from a flow–through

Accounting Information Systems
Chapter One
As accounting students we have studied a variety of accounting areas involving financial and taxes.
The accounting information course appears to be a course that heads in a different direction then
what we as students have become accustomed to. Speaking for myself I have always been drawn to
the accounting field because it is a black and white area. In other words, there it is organized and has
right and wrong answers, this leaving out the gray areas between right and wrong.
Accounting information systems appears to be throwing us into a whole new area of the study of
accounting. The fine line between right and wrong is becoming smudged into a gray area. With
accounting information system we are being thrown into an area ... Show more content on

One of the groups is sponsored/commercial information that has the main interest of making a profit
by selling products and their services. The second type is going to be popular/practitioner
information and is put through a review process. Both of these groups can be bias but the second
group will usually be trustworthy. However, we will need to keep in mind that the writer of the
second group may have a motive. The third group is the scholarly information group which also has
been put through a review process. This third group is written by people with higher degrees and
can be hard for undergraduates to interpret. Information on accounting information systems will
need to be reviewed and looked over carefully to make sure that it is valid information and
something that we should really consider before it is used.
I have chosen these points in the text as important ones because the conceptual framework is one
that we should become familiar with because it should be there throughout our education and follow
us into our careers because it was developed to be used as a guide for any future accounting
principle. The construction of an accounting information system is also important because we are
going to need to know what the accounting information system is constructed of because there may
be a day that we will be asked to help with the development and we should know the basic concept
of it and what it is.

Nowadays, technology is considered as one reason why other countries are in the highest class.
Through technology people gained knowledge by discovering different things that may help for the
improvement of the country. Technology is far getting farther. Technology, which began from a
simple device, now becomes a high speed and multi – tasking one. This is the only way in which
they cope with their various demands of their customers, clients and furthermore they do not have to

Handling o the adding, changing, dropping of subjects and solving enrolment related problems.
(Management Information System Office, 2006)
Based on the MMS (2008) the automated student info–system can handle all the school and/or
district needs such as maintaining grades, producing report cards, automatically registers all students
from the first day of school and producing a standardized, computerized and customized register
reports. This is done to lessen the time and efforts rendered by the faculties in creating, managing
and keeping all students' records. With these, it suggest to have an automated student info–system
which will give lots of benefits and problems will then be minimized and lessen compared with the
continuous use of the manual system. Tide Water Community College stated that SIS allows you to
access your personal student information, access real–time schedule information, enroll and drop
classes, pay for classes using a Visa or Mastercard, obtain your final grades, request transcripts,
reviewing advising transcripts to see what courses are needed to complete degree programs, check,
financial aid award and more on online. Student IS has a big role in every educational institution.
According to IES, a well designed automated student record system will reach more than teachers
and administrators. It also benefits the students and others by providing information on the

facing UCB in regards to the helpdesk would be that the basic system they had in place makes it
hard for them to keep track of the large number of client's data and also the limited number of
spoken languages makes it harder for them to meet expected standards as the typical call centre in
Europe provided support with 7 to 10 spoken languages.

1– components of an information system:
Information System is a complete set of software and hardware, data, people, and procedures, and
networks that enable the use of information resources in the organization. There are six components
of information systems and each component has its strength and weakness points, and it has its
properties and its uses. And also each component of Information System has its own security
requirements. A– Software:

Hardware must be protected from damage or theft, such as the application of physical security, keys
or locks. These restrict access to computers and interact with the hardware components of
information systems. Securing the actual location is very important because if it had been entered
may result in loss of information or result other unpredictable problems.
C– Data:
Data is the most important thing owned by the organization and it is the main target and objective of
deliberate attacks. Database management systems are the best way to protect the data and
applications from an outsider attack if they develop and implement it properly.
D– People:
In order to generate or operate any system the qualify people necessarily appear. Often the most
over–looked element of the information system is the people, probably the component that most
influence the success or failure of information systems.
E– Procedures:
Procedures are another important component of information system. Procedures are responsible
component on the drawing process and write the instructions for accomplishing tasks. Procedures
are considered as very important for the integrity of the information in the organization, because if it
used by unauthorized user may threat the security of the information. Organization should give the
accurate members the knowledge of procedures only on a need–to–know basis.

Computer-Based Career Information Systems Essay
Computer–Based Career Information Systems
The adage "information is power" can certainly be applied to the marriage of career information
with computers. In an era that is characterized by a rapidly changing employment and occupational
outlook, the ability to access computerized career information has been empowering to both youth
and adults (Bloch 1989; Tice and Gill 1991). Defined as "all that people need to know to make
choices and take action . . . in relation to their paid or unpaid occupational activities and in relation
to their preparation for these activities" (Bloch 1989, p. 120), career information includes
knowledge about occupational areas and specific jobs; information about career preparation and

Predictions about the future of CCIS are presented in conclusion.
Career Information Systems: An Overview
The best known computer–based career information systems are the state–based career information
delivery systems (CIDS). Serving over 9 million customers yearly at more than 20,000 sites, CIDS
operate in 48 states and provide information about occupations and educational programs within
that state (Mariani 1995–96; National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee 1996).
Although CIDS have been developed by a number of different vendors and customized for
particular audiences, they share the following core features (ibid.):
Assessment. Most CIDS now have one or more online tools that help users assess their values,
interests, skills, aptitudes, or experiences as well as the characteristics they expect from a job. These
assessments help users learn about themselves and the qualities they might prefer in a career. A
relatively new feature of CIDS, skills assessments have proven especially helpful to experienced
workers who need to find a new career.
Occupational Search. The occupational search feature allows users to match personal characteristics
with compatible job and career possibilities. Some occupational searches are based on the results of
the assessments, but, in others, the user selects and rates search variables that are then used to
generate a list of occupations. Users may also simply access an index of occupations

Description Of An Information System
Oxford Dictionary: "An information system which allows the user to analyse, display, and
manipulate spatial data, such as from surveying and remote sensing, typically in the production of
maps; abbreviated GIS."
An information system is something that businesses use to get information across the business from
all sections, for example NRC would take information from tutor's attendance sheets and send that
to Human Resources, they would then make decisions based on this information. Businesses today
are opting towards an online information system rather than the old fashioned methods.
Every system today has the game overall goals/outcomes with those being, Input leading to process
leading to the output which then is followed by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is also known as an operational system.
The second tier would be called the technical system, this would be "managing information system"
which is the process that the business uses to obtain and send out reports of the business itself as a
whole, for example for NRC this would be able to track the staff attendance, student attendance,
most popular courses, least popular courses and file reports based on this.
Below is a screenshot from the NRC website showing the application button as well as this, below
the previous screenshot will be one that shows the courses available on the website
The final type is the strategic, for this I've chosen decision support, this is the system that businesses
would use to attempt to find the best possible outcome for certain situations, the business is able to
ask the system a question and then the system would respond with options, for example if NRC was
to use this system and ask it how to improve the college, the system would respond with multiple
methods that the college could use.

Marketing Management : Marketing Manager Essay
As I read the articles and after I made some research about marketing, I noticed that there are
different roles. For example, one that caught my attention was marketing manager. The salary was
not what caught my attention, because they do get paid very well. But what caught my attention was
the name. When I read the the first article, I thought it would be simple. I thought it would have
been simple, because in high school I was the soccer captain and manager for the varsity and junior
varsity team, and there was not much to do. Once I research the job description for marketing
manager, my whole idea of a simple job flew away. A marketing manager has to do a lot. Some
examples of their job descriptions are "plan marketing and branding objectives", "expand product
solutions and offerings", "prepare and adhere to budgets" and the list keeps adding up
(http://www.americasjobexchange.com/marketing–manager–job–description). A marketing manager
has an important role in keeping the company or organization stable or even improving. One
important skill I believe would be needed for marketing is communication. Working in the field of
marketing, deals with interacting with others for different purposes. In order to come with an
agreement there needs to be a form of communication. Also a good connection would be the activity

candy bar we have created, but at the same time convinced them to

Using Software Tools And Techniques
I. INTRODUCTION In general, we people often make decisions based on suggestions from our
friends, family members or even from the people who have better knowledge and experience with
the things that we want to make decision on. And moreover, in the today's world, things that we
want to buy or make decision on, are coming with a vast number of alternative solutions which is
throwing us into the difficulty to make a decision. For example, when we want to buy a television
for the first time, it will be very difficult for us to choose the right one from the list with a large
number of alternative solutions ranging from different makers to different models from a maker.
Because of this confusion, we will consult people who have better experience and knowledge on
these things and ask for their valuable suggestions or recommendations that will help us in making
decision. This type of suggestions and recommendations can also be provided by using software
tools and techniques which are termed as Recommender Systems or Recommendation Systems
(RSs). A recommender system, often recommends or suggests the items which may be kind of
useful to the user. And these recommender systems are mainly employed by the e–commerce
industries who sells millions of items to the people through internet. Here, these RSs are employed
to suggest or recommend items (which may be of useful) to the users based on their past purchases
and also at the same time to increase their sales. Today's cyberspace has

In the 1990s it seems many of the cuts were made in the white–collar, management jobs. Why? Think about it. Technology, to a large extent, has driven organizations to change the way they operate and that includes the way they manage. We're going to take an in–depth look at how organizations work and how they've been transformed by technology on the world stage. Information systems are the foundation for conducting business today. In many industries, survival and even existence is difficult without extensive use of information technology. No longer can we imagine going to work and conducting business without them. We understand that we are required to draw a direct correlation between what we've learnt in lectures and textbooks and see if we could relate it to challenges that Information Systems Managers face in the real world or see how much of a gap we have between what we learn and what actually happens in the corporate world. We would like to extrapolate inputs received from Mim during the interview in our research report and build on the points that he has made. Mr. Saznus was gracious enough to spare some time for an interview and we had a few great learnings and insights into the Information Systems space. The sheer volume of information of all types is ever increasing, making the job of IT manager more difficult. To remain competent, IT managers must keep up with the latest trends and new technologies. The evaluation of new technology is another skill related to information literacy, since the information describing such technology can take many forms. The best IT managers are highly skilled in such evaluations. These effective managers seem to be rare, as found in Li (2009). That study found that to deal with the difficulties of IT management, many organizations used encroachment, to save face for executives by simplifying and deflecting harmful results and analysis. This spreads the managerial blame and deals with the well documented fact (every computer science student is taught this) that over 60% of all technology projects fail and software development projects in particular fail even more frequently. The reasons for the failure of such projects include the incompetence of IT management (Toader et al., 2010). This is increasingly exemplified by the inability to communicate effectively with workers of foreign origin and incorrect evaluations of technology. Stores were out of stock on items, while the same items were sitting in Pamida's warehouses. Although Pamida changed its warehouse from a flow–through facility to a full–service distribution center, it did not update or replace its warehousing software. According to Pamida's CIO Dan Nicklen, the reason the warehouse management software was not updated was because "the software had been working fine under the old distribution system." As a result of the inadequate warehouse management information system, bottlenecks occurred, earnings declined in the first nine months of 2001, and ShopKo lost $6.7 million in overall revenue. Speaking for myself I have always been drawn to the accounting field because it is a black and white area. In other words, there it is organized and has right and wrong answers, this leaving out the gray areas between right and wrong. And moreover, in the today's world, things that we want to buy or make decision on, are coming with a vast number of alternative solutions which is throwing us into the difficulty to make a decision. For example, when we want to buy a television for the first time, it will be very difficult for us to choose the right one from the list with a large number of alternative solutions ranging from different makers to different models from a maker. Because of this confusion, we will consult people who have better experience and knowledge on these things and ask for their valuable suggestions or recommendations that will help us in making decision. This type of suggestions and recommendations can also be provided by using software tools and techniques which are termed as Recommender Systems or Recommendation Systems (RSs).
