Comparison Of Wilfredo Lam
Comparison of Primitivist imagery in Wilfredo Lam's Untitled, 1953 and Matta's Untitled (Flying
People Eaters), 1942. Wilfredo Lam's Untitled, 1953 and Matta's Untitled (Flying People Eaters),
1942 share a wall in gallery 397 of the AIC. The two drawings were completed within 12 years of
each other, and they seem be in conversation as surrealist compositions. Both pieces incorporate
primitivist imagery into their engagement with the surreal. However, where Matta uses this imagery
to further Freudian shock value and bring forward abject discomfort, Lam uses "primitive"
symbology to discuss notions of Afro–Cuban identity through a cubist and surreal lens. Untitled,
1953 is a graphite drawing on cream wove paper. The paper has a visible ... Show more content on

This figure's body is cropped, leaving the viewer with only its torso and head. While portions of this
figure's body are more humanoid than the previous, (a pronounced shoulder and breast ground the
character) once we move up from these shoulders the body seems to break into geometric
abstraction. A spiky neck extends and transforms into a sort of scaffolding to hold up the mask–face.
This figure is also decorated with flowers and hair like protrusions, suggesting an almost ritualistic
garb. Taking up the entire right side of the composition a third character ascends a staircase and
rests one hand on a disjointed platform. This figure wears an elaborate headdress, fabric sash and
holds a large knife tucked at it's side. The figure's long toes curl around the top stair where it stands
surveying the other two figures. This figure also has a tail, and the same mirroring happens between
the extending hairs of the headdress and the hairs of its tail as with the candle light and tail of the
first figure. The decorations and prominence of this figure give it an air of spiritual significance, the
word priest seems apt. Behind this figure is the forth and final figure of the composition. This figure
stands lower on the staircase behind the figure with the knife. This figure has a head shaped like a
goblet filled with toothpicks. We only see the head and shoulders of this figure,

Personal Narrative: Representing The World
The outside of my mask represents what I show or represent the world. The blue on my mask
represent my calm and relaxed thoughts. Several people have told me that I seem relaxed all the
time. Also, the blue represents positive thoughts, since I seem to be always positive outside. The
eyes are closed also because I looked relaxed and calmed. The zipper symbolizes how I am
introverted and shy. I would not talk unless you talk to me. My archetype is the caregiver, I do love
taking care of other people more than me. These are the personas I show the world. The inside of
my mask represents what I hide within me. The black represent every negative thoughts. Also, the
black represents all the worry and anxiety I feel. I may be positive outside, but

Comparing The Painting Bathers And Andre Derain's Blue Nude
Wright 2
Henri Matisse and Andre Derain were a part of multiple art movements and they created very
controversial artwork using the ideas of Primitivism. They're also the founders of Fauvism, that's
why they wanted to incorporate color and structure into their art. They wanted the colors themselves
to evoke emotion, without it having to relate back to the natural world. In Blue Nude and Bathers,
they achieved this goal successfully. I think that Matisse's Blue Nude painting was inspiration for
Derain's painting Bathers. They both depict naked women lying outside, however Blue Nude was
painted first. After analyzing these two pieces, I've concluded that Henri Matisse's Blue Nude
painting (1907) & Andre Derain's painting Bathers (1908) were both influential representations of
the primitive ideas prevalent at the time through their use of overt sexuality & their imitation of
African masks.
Both of these paintings display the freedom of sexuality. Blue Nude even has a sexual title. The
woman is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They both want the viewer to focus more on the colors, lines, and brush strokes, instead of the
image itself. They both wanted their work to speak for itself and it did. Ultimately, Bathers was
favored more than Blue Nude. I think that they're both conversation pieces and are explicit
paintings, but the audiences at that time were more upset about them. The flatness of Bathers is
quite interesting. Because it's hard to tell where the light source is coming from, or if there even is a
light source. While Blue Nude makes it easier for the viewer to see that the light source is coming
from the left side. Both paintings utilize blue paint, but Blue Nude uses it more harshly than
Bathers. Blue Nude has the blue paint surrounding the nude lady while Bathers has the blue paint
surrounding only a few ladies. I think that Derain's Bathers wanted to somewhat imitate Matisse's

Egypt Burial Process
When I was 9, I was very interested in early civilizations and their various cultures. Among the
many beautiful heritages I read about, Egypt was one of my favorite. From the many gods to
worship to the architecture to the language to the infamous curses to the extravagant burial, I was
completely hooked. This specific mask however, stood out amongst the rest. I remember spending
days and days thinking of the cursed tomb and of the teen boy found at that site. I remember
wondering how a 9 year old, could rule a whole country. I had wanted to become a archaeologist
because of this specific story surrounding the mask. I was enthralled by the egyptians detailed belief
of the afterlife and especially their burial process. This mask is a big part

Masks In Hamlet
The character that I have chosen to design a mask for is Hamlet. In my mask design I have chosen
the colour blue, a noose and a dagger. I chose the colour blue because blue represents depression;
throughout the play Hamlet shows many signs of being depressed. After Hamlet's father's death,
Hamlet went into a mode of not having anything to live for. He himself would rather have died than
live in a world where someone who is so corrupted ruled. Hamlet was very depressed that he said
"O, that this too too sullied flesh would melt Thaw and resolve it'self into a dew," (I. ii. 131–132).
Hamlet would have killed himself if it was not a sin. The next symbol that i have chosen is a noose.
I chose the noose because one of the main motifs in the play

Comparing Black And Blue, And They Wear The Mask
"Black And Blue", by Louis Armstrong and "We Wear The Mask", by Paul Laurence Dunbar both
take a further meaning in a profound way of Ellison's work. Louis Armstrong poetically writes
"what did I do? Tell me, what did I do to be so black and blue?" The way in which it flows suggests
that Armstrong brings what happens in society (desegregation) and incorporates it into his lyrics.
The tempo of the song makes me question, was he sad or happy. Are the lyrics making him out to be
black or white? "Black and Blue" is a completely different concept and teaching from "We Wear
The Mask", being that they want to hide their emotions with a different face. Armstrong sings "I'm
white on the inside, but that doesn't help my case Cause I can't hide what is on my face" his
emotions pour out of emptiness on the inside and he can't help but show it on face. ... Show more

This invisibleness, that the nameless narrator feels doesn't come until the end of his pilgrimage, and
to where the holes introduced and honestly I still don't understand how one day he's a 'real'/visible
person and then all of a sudden becoming invisible and finding a "hole". The song "Paper doll" by
The Mills Brothers, that Patty introduced in class opens up another way of thinking when it says
"I'm gonna buy a Paper Doll that I can call my own," most of the class thought that he was buying
his own doll, a plastic doll to talk to. My first thought was that this could be related to today with
men wanting to have a trophy wife, and the husband can work and bring home all the money, while
the wife stays home and looks pretty. Thinking about how Ellison wrote the women in Invisibles
life, they don't hold much importance to him besides

Edwards Snow Summary
Both articles address the use of the color blue almost immediately, and each's beliefs conflicts with
the other. In the first article by Edwards Snow, he clearly states, "The historical context of childrens
games yields neither a unified period consciousness nor a set of stable sixteenth–century
"beliefs".p.43 Snow clearly states that the information provided various sources in regards to the use
of color must therefore be taken with a grain of salt, as none of them can with a one–hundred
percent certainty be certain. He follows with, "The color iconography at a medieval or renaissance
artist disposal was so polyvalent that scarcely ever is the prominent use of a certain color sufficient
in and of itself to establish the emblematic significance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Snow speaks about age in the beginning of his article when he talks about mask, and how the
pairing between the child and the masked character represent different perspectives on ow to view
the world. "The face on the right epitomizes the ingenious gaze... adult mask, on the other hand,
peers intently on the scene below, but with a misanthropic scowl that is ingrained in its features, and
with eyes that are as empty and incapable of vision as the small child's wistful gaze."28 Snow
believes that Bruegel uses the masks to represent two different age perspectives on the same scene,
and claims that while an innocent may view what is happening below with a sense of delight, the
masked figure does not. This is later supported by the idea that, "Mask shows childhood growing
into ugly., predetermined adult forms. and at the same time pictures the misanthropic, "supervisory"
point of the view where this sense of things originates; the face on the right reciprocates by
picturing childhood innocence as "weak and passively vulnerable to corruption." p.28 Hindsman on
the other hand sees age as a way to represent the passage of seasons and how that correlates with
growing older. Starting with a reference to a religious holiday, and how that correlates to the next
season which moves into ideas about love and marriage and how that is followed later by a
baptismal, which is a progression of event that happen over time as one gets older. Hindsman also
points out previous work by Bruegel, where he uses the passage of months to represent the passage
of time for men as they traverse from "adolescence (into) manhood"

One fall day in October, I decided to clean the attic. The attic was starting to get full so I thought it
was time to clean it out. As I was cleaning it out I found some dead rats and mice. There were a lot
of boxes but one of them stood out. In the old box was a mask. I lifted the mask from the box and
admired its beauty. I feel like the mask was a magical mask. I feel like it would bring good things to
me. The colors are amazing red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, gray, and pink. All the colors

How Did Pablo Picasso Impact The World
Pablo Picasso arrived in Paris in the year 1900 at the age of just 19, and within a few years he
became a well–known artist and a dominating figure in the world of modern art movement. The one
piece of art that he produced in 1906 through 1907 was the Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and would
change the word of art forever. This became the piece art that helped launch Cubism and a whole
new artistic expression. Because of this art and many other, Pablo Picasso has become one of the
most important figure of 20th century, in terms of art, and art movements that occurred over this
period. This Spanish born artist had a distinct style and eye for artistic creation. There had been no
other artists, prior to Picasso, who had such an impact on the art world. Although his art career

The dark blue left eye and light blue right tells me that Pablo Picasso may have used her actual eye
color. Her body is almost as if she had her back to Picasso and turning her torso toward him; such as
in most contrapposto art. In the original sketch you can clearly see her arms and the detail of her
body. She is not looking back at Picasso, but instead looking toward the opening curtain. The hair of
the young lady is also more visible as it drapes down her back. By repositioning her arm and adding
the mask he completely changed her appearance, not only in her face but her body as well. Picasso
gave her a double point of view, as you look at her nose and the angles it provides. The hand under
the chin gives it an almost claw like feature, with what seems to be her fingers going to her eye to
her the opposite side of the chin. With the sharp angles and mask and all the distortion it would be
difficult to truly see just the young lady. It is almost as if she is shards of glass pieced together to

An Analysis Of La Persistencia De La Memoria
Another surrealist work of art by Salvador Dali is La Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2). It was
painted in 1931, and is an oil on canvas. The painting can be found at The Museum of Modern Art
in New York City, NY, with dimensions of 33 x 24.1 cm. La Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2) is
Salvador Dali's most famous painting. The oil painting is set in a desert area with a lake or pond
casting off into the background. The rocks in the background are very sharp but the rest of the
background is smooth. The sky is a gentle blue with yellow tones that blend together. On the left
side of the painting, is a rectangular board or platform with a reflective surface. The foreground

The clocks all look thin and noodle–like with the box being rough and wooden. Finally, the white
figure has a smooth exterior with the lashes looking like actual hair. Salvador Dali's painting, La
Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2), represents the scientific Freudian influence. Everything appears
to be in a dream–like state because nothing makes logical sense (Eggener 36). Each clock represents
a different time in life, whether it is his past, is current state, or his future. The jagged cracks in the
mountains symbolize the rough patches or cracks that one must go through in life and the reflections
in the water and platform show how those mistakes reflect who we are. The dead tree shows that
eventually we all will grow old and die. Lastly, the white figure is Salvador Dali and how his life is
slowly ticking away as well and the eyes are shut because he is reflecting on it in a dream. The final
artwork of Salvador Dali's that exemplifies Surrealism is Portrait de Paul Eluard (fig. 3). This
artwork was painted in 1929 is also an oil on canvas. It can be found in the Dali Theatre and
Museum, Figueres, Spain. The dimensions of Portrait de Paul Eluard (fig. 3) are 33 x 25 cm. The
painting is of a man named Paul Eluard who was a French poet and one of the founders of
Surrealism. Eluard was also Dali's futures wife's boyfriend at the time. Portrait de Paul Eluard (fig.

The Blue Green Anesthesia Mask Essay
As I'm wheeled through the silver doors into the sterile white operating room, I begin to panic. This
is my first surgery, and I feel as if I am in a living nightmare. Before I can even think about it, the
nurses guide me onto the skinny white operating room bed. A few seconds later, the blue–green
anesthesia mask is put on my face, and I feel like I am going underwater with my eyes closed. Then
everything around me goes completely black. I was diagnosed with a rare, non–agressive type of
skin cancer on my scalp in 2011. Soon after diagnosis, I underwent an MRI to see exactly how big
the cancer was. Fortunately, it was only the size of a pencil eraser. After seeing countless doctors,
we (my parents and I) finally decided to see a surgeon specializing in cancer at Northwestern
Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. We met with the cancer surgeon (Dr. Wayne), and he
agreed to remove the cancer. We also saw a plastic surgeon (Dr. Kim) the same day to discuss
reconstruction options so that my scalp would look as normal as possible after the surgery. My
surgery is scheduled for the morning of February 8, 2012 at 7 AM; however, we need to arrive at the
hospital at 5:30 to start the preparation process. As we walk through the Outpatient Surgery unit
doors, I immediately notice the amount of chaos surrounding the unit. You wouldn't know that it
was only 5:30 AM with all the noise! There are people making phone calls, crying babies, and
others who were trying to escape it all by

Examples Of Evil In Jekyll And Hyde
Mask of Evil What is Evil? The meaning of evil is profoundly immoral and malevolent. Some
examples of evil are anonymously emailing death threats, suing someone who did nothing wrong in
order to try to collect a big payday and passing on information that you know is a lie about a
political opponent. These are not truly evil, they are mainly rude. The mask I made shows that there
are 2 different faces. It represents that most evil people have 2 faces. (They wear a fake face while
they also wear another face at different times.) An evil person is a person who harms people out of
hatred. They also don't feel bad after what they did something to someone or a group of people.

copycats. In Jekyll and Hyde, Hyde did not get influenced into becoming evil it just happened over
time. The mask I made shows that when you wear a mask it covers what your hiding but some of
what your hiding may slip out. I also put other colors on the different sides of the mask to show that
even though a person a person is nice and friendly or they are mean and evil. Additionally, over time
or at random times they would have an opposite emotions outburst. Hyde gets mad over time. He

Seahorse Description
The vibrant colors of underwater fish and othercolorful sea elements enhance the beauty of sea
environments. There are more than 30 different kinds of seahorses. Their charming formbeauty and
beautyforms make them an inspiring subject yet challenging to paint. One of favorite habitat of
seahorses is seagrass. For my first project, a yellowish–brown seahorse against a blue underwater
background comes to my mind. I want to add colorful seagrass alongside the seahorse rather than
plain green seagrass. The goal is to capture the texture and rhythm of the underwater environment.

gamboge, quinacridone gold, magenta and indigo. I wet each seagrass with clean water and then
mingle two or three colors I prepare. I drop one color after another and allow them to blend together.
I repeat the process for the other seagrass, changing colors as I work. To add an interesting texture, I
lift out some wet colors with a face tissue. I let the washes dry.
4. I decide to mask all seagrass before applying the second wash of the underwater background.
Using a 2" wash brush, I wet the entire paper again carefully, trying not to disturb the initial wash. I
apply new gamboge first at the left side and bottom corner, then move into other water areas. I
continue dropping in thalo blue and ultramarine blue wet–in–wet. For areas where the main
elements are overlapped, I drop in thick and dark indigo to make them stand out more. Before the
wash dries, I add more salt and rubbing alcohol to the left side of the

Symbolism In The Red Masque
Some people may think that status or wealth, automatically means that they are exempt from the bad
things in life such as illness or deadly diseases. A group of wealthy people think that they can escape
death by locking themselves away from the world, but they will discover they are mistaken. In the
story "The Red Masque" by Edgar Allan Poe a terrible contagion is spreading across the world.
Price Prospero a wealthy lord, invites one thousand guests to lock themselves in his castellated
abbeys to escape the Red Death. The Prince orders the gates be welded shut allowing no entrance or

a dagger, which represents Prince Prospero's attempt to seize the mummer, to literally try to kill the

However, in many places in the world right now and in Shakespeare's time, not everyone had this
right and were restricted to speak their mind. Except Feste the clown. In Twelfth Night, we can see
that the only position that isn't high ranking and were allowed to say what they wanted was a jester
(fool). For example, while talking to Olivia, he says "The more fool, madonna, to mourn for your
brother's soul being in heaven. Take the fool away, gentlemen," which means he is saying that
Olivia is stupid for mourning for her brother, something a normal citizen at the time wouldn't have
been able to say. From this, is it clear that he uses his profession as a figurative mask to excuse a lot
of what he says. Although Feste is a clown, he is one of Shakespeare's ironies meaning that he is
very intelligent on the inside, thus a lot of what he says is true. This relates to the Essential Question
because many people in real life do/did not have this basic human right. For example, in World War
II, the Nazi's restricted the Jews to have rights and wanted to rid the entire race. The only way the
Jews could protect themselves is to disguise themselves as another race. This helped the Jews gain

Tutankhamun's Death Mask: Ancient Egyptian History
Tutankhamun's Death Mask
By Sanuli
Tutankhamun was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty who lived in a period of Egyptian
history known as the New Kingdom or the New Empire Period. He began his reign when he was
only 9! He reigned for about 10 years and soon died. Most scientists have concluded that the most
likely cause of his death was from a broken leg but there are several valid reasons that makes the
answer never for certain. His death mask was an important artefact in history. It was bright, shiny
yellow and blue. It was heavy (nearly 11 kilograms) and made of actual gold as well as lapis lazuli.
It was made by two sheets of gold hammered together. It covered the head of the deceased pharaoh's
mummy. This was done too ensure that the spirit of the dead person would recognise their body.
This artefact was found in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, a royal burial ground located on the
west bank of the ancient city of Thebes. Tutankhamun was believed to be buried in 1324 BC. The
mask was found by a British Egyptologist called Howard Carter in 1925 in tomb KV62. This was
one of the biggest finds of the century. Howard Carter was actually running out of money for ...

It was mainly for making sure his spirit would recognise the body as the mask was a replica of his
face except in blue and gold. There were also other ideas though like they were mementos of the
dead or be used for creation of portraits. This mask was not carelessly made. For the pharaohs, they
were carefully crafted and made of only the most expensive and precious materials. Masks were
used a lot in ancient Egyptian culture. There were ritual masks and death masks. They were used for
gods and even poorer citizens. However, masks for the poor citizens were made of lot less
expensive materials that were not as good quality, things like cartonnage. This was a material made

The Blue Mask by Lou Reed
Lou Reed's, The Blue Mask
Although the visionary singer, song writer, Lou Reed, gained his fame in the 70's, he reached the
highest peak of his career with the album "The Blue Mask," in which he explored the elements of
human flaws. With this album, he stripped down from his dramatic work in the 70's and explored
new techniques along with his small, tight–knit band. "The Blue Mask" received excellent reviews
from critics and consumers because it allowed listeners to have a personal connection with Reed and
showed them a different side apart from the public persona. Overall, the achievements and praise
were well deserved for the hard work he and his band put in.
Lou Reed, a New York native, attended the University of Syracuse and studied poetry and
journalism. He later became the lead singer for the band, Velvet Underground during the 60's. He is
commonly known today as the one who started the punk rock era and "also brought a stormy
dissonance to the foreground, helping to expand the vocabulary of the electric guitar" (Rolling Stone
Bio). He broke away from his partnership with Velvet Underground and headed for England in
pursuit of a solo career. Over a decade later, he released the album, The Blue Mask.
The Blue Mask was under the direction of RCA Records and was originally distributed on a 12 inch
vinyl stereo gramophone record. RCA Records owned the phonographic copyrights, as well as
regular copyrights. Lou Reed produced the entire album with the help of

Elektra, who plotted a revenge with her brother Orestes against their mother Clytemnestra and

character in ancient Greek mythology. In the opera Elektra by Richard Strauss and Hugo von
Hofmannsthal, there are some distinct stylistic features from Classical Greek theater. They are
masks, customs and chorus. In ancient Greek theater, masks are significant element in ceremony and

the actor to vanish into the role. In the opera Elektra we watched, all the character were maked up

The brown and green represent Jack's mask. Golding uses the mask to represent savagery and
human nature, showing how Jack was consumed by his barbaric instincts. Similarly, I placed the
brown and green on the outside to illustrate how the mask consumes him. Furthermore, Jack uses
the mask to ¨hid(e behind), liberated from shame and self–consciousness...¨(Golding 64). Finally,

to death. The most notable illustration of this is idea of life in death is King Tutankhamun's Death
Mask. The mask itself presents an image of the youthful pharaoh along with its celebration of death
in Egyptians culture. This mask represents the point of artistic and technological achievement in
Egypt in the New Kingdom. It also shows use of symbolism and iconography of Egyptian high
complex culture and religion. In addition, the mask was used to protect and aid his journey to the
afterlife. It accomplished this beautiful representation of life and death by its style of elegance. King
Tut's mask conventionally called the death mask represents the spirit of life and death in a cohesive
element. The mask of King Tut was created by welding, riveting, and chasing metals to form a
depiction of the boy king's face. The mask is detailed with blue lapis, ... Show more content on

This inscription not only gives us a vivid detail of Egyptian beliefs but also the advancement and
structural intelligence of the Egyptian. The inscription is located on the back of the mask in ten
vertical and two horizontal protective lines of spell 151 from ancient Egypt's Book Of The Dead.
The spell refers to the opening of four doors, bricks of heaven, before reaching Thoth. Thoth was
believed to be the scribe of the underworld; he was also in charge of the scales in Hall of Judgment
of Heaven. Thoth used the scales to weigh the deceased heart against the feather of truth to
determine if the individual was worthy to pass into the afterlife. If the heart weighed as light as a
feather, not burdened with evil, the person would pass to the afterlife of heaven. Thoth would then
record the results of the judgment. The inscription was intended to be a "road map" and protect for

The Mask Of Symbols In Lord Of The Flies
The Mask of Symbols
I chose to make a mask to represent that there was a dark side to every character, not only Jack. This
topic stood out to me because as the novel progressed,I saw that no matter who they were, every
character showed their dark side at some point, even Ralph in chapter twelve when he was fighting
for his life.I associate this mask to every single person. We all have a dark side, some just take more
than others to unleash it.Some alternative ideas I considered were creating a personal mask that
represents darkness into the light.I didn't choose it because the mask of symbols had a deeper image
and stronger theme. Now as for the mask itself,it doesn't just represent one character, but all.A
feature I really

Oil Painting, The Unknown: Robert Bean
The Unknown
As I walked to The Art museum to observe a few of the art work. There were many canvases, but
one particular canvas that caught my attention was an oil painting. The oil painted canvas is of a
realistic mysterious woman and a phonograph, by the artist named Robert Bean. The woman shown
in this painting has short dark brown hair with a long black beautiful one shoulder dress; her skin
color is very light that gives that beautiful glow. Her long black dress has a mixture of dark blue and
white. She is standing with her arms semi–crossed with one hand holding a small white fan. The
small fan has a design of brown flowers. She is standing sideways on the right of the canvas with a
piece of light green fabric around her arms; the light green material has a tent of light blue and ...

The majestic and mysterious masquerade ball was the inspiration of this painting. The masquerade
ball was developed in Europe in the 14th and 15th century; masquerade balls were held for the high
class in the century of the Renaissance. The elegancy in costumes and masks in the masquerade ball
inspired the painting as the result of the woman with the mask and a beautiful one shoulder black
dress.
In my opinion, this work of art was truly amazing with the touch of darkness, mystery, and elegancy.
The artist used the color mixture very well for that old antique look. The artist did very well in
painting the background black and the woman black dress to distinguish the dress apart from the
background. The phonograph is also distinguished from the background by painting white around
the device. It gives that feeling of romance and darkness at the same time. The painting leaves the
viewers of wanting more which the artist should had incorporated more things rather than just the
woman and the phonograph. In the end, the masterpiece is absolutely amazing with a touch of the
old century and modern

Analysis Of We Wear The Mask By Chestnutt
African American literature from the Colonial era through Reconstruction shows how African
Americans were always treated differently and many of them had to either ignore the awful things
the white people said to them, or they had to hide behind a mask of someone everyone tells them to
be. One of these incidences of having to just ignore society was in the folktale "'Member Youse a
Nigger" when John spend his days keeping quiet and doing only the things that would set him free.
While the story "The Wife of His Youth" by Charles Chestnutt and the poem "We Wear the Mask"
by Paul Laurence Dunbar were about the effects that society has on 'colored' people. Both stories
showing how people feel it is okay to pretend to be someone that they aren't ... Show more content

He speaks the truth of the things that people hide every day about themselves and put on a silly
mask that makes other think they are okay. The Blue Vein Society in Chestnuts story is about black
folk who want to be like the white people and have normal, wealthy and happy lives. But after Liza
Jane shows up every who was wearing a mask took their mask off for just that moment and even the
woman that Mr. Ryder was planning on marrying saw what really should have been seen. Finally,
after moments of waiting for change everything in both "The wife of His Youth" and "'member
youse a Nigger" rapidly changed in the blink of an eye. Mr. Ryder's speech about a woman who was
faithful for twenty–five years touched the hearts of not just his own but to everyone who showed up
to the ball. Also, as for John instead of him putting on a mask every day and working hard to earn
his freedom he finally got to take off his mask and embrace the black man that he truly was by

Rhetorical Devices Of `` We Wear The Mask `` And `` Harlem ``
In literature, rhetorical devices are primarily used to convey a particular feeling or action to the
reader. Through the use of rhetorical devices such as imagery, description, and metaphorical
allusion, the author gives the reader the ability to connect with the text on a more intimate level that
otherwise would not have been achieved without the use of them. Subsequently, Harlem
Renaissance writers such as Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Langston Hughes employed the rhetorical
devices of imagery, description and metaphorical allusion to convey the egregious realities of the
black experience in the United States during the early twentieth century. In writings such as, "We
Wear the Mask" by Paul Lawrence Dunbar and "Harlem" by Langston Hughes, the use of rhetorical
devices gives each writer the ability to provide commentary on the social, economic, and political
circumstances that African–Americans faced in inner–city Harlem during the turn of the twentieth
century.
In "We Wear the Mask", Dunbar primarily employs the rhetorical device of metaphorical allusion to
give the reader a sense of how African–Americans navigated socially in a traditionally white
supremacist, patriarchal society. He begins his poem, with "We wear the mask that grins and lies, it
hides are cheeks and shades our eyes" (Dunbar, "We Wear the Mask"). Here, he employs the use of
the mask to elaborate on the "double–consciousness" that African–Americans had to exhibit in order
to function during that tumultuous

she'll recognize him when she sees him, if she sees him. He begs her there, wills her to him,
promises he will be waiting, but never is. Even in dream she is always searching for him, always
fighting for destiny. The room she is in is always the same, large and white, decorated for a ball,
filled with enemies dressed for a masquerade. Their faces are hidden behind party masks, with eyes
deceiving, betraying their intent, and she fears them. Her red gold hair is puffed, wild with curls,

struggles, fights against them, and finally she breaks free. The thick shroud of dark suffocates her as
she runs for air, for freedom. But sinister hands refuse to give up. They still grab for her, attacking
her now tender flesh, clawing at her, ripping fabric from her dress, trying their hardest to pull her

Salvador Dali Analysis
Salvador Dali's painting represents the scientific Freudian influence. Everything appears to be in a
dream–like state because nothing makes logical sense. The idea behind the artwork is because of
melting cheese and bizarre dreams. It is stated that, "the message Dali is trying to spread is that life
is fast paced and full of choices which sometimes produce unfavorable outcomes, but we move on"
(Ukessays 1). Each clock represents a different time in life, whether it is his past, is current state, or
his future. The jagged cracks in the mountains symbolize the rough patches or cracks that one must
go through in life and the reflections in the water and platform show how those mistakes reflect who
we are. The dead tree shows that eventually we all will grow old and die. Lastly, the white figure is
Salvador Dali and how his life is slowly ticking away as well and the eyes are shut because he is
reflecting on it in a dream. The final artwork of Salvador Dali's that exemplifies Surrealism is
Portrait de Paul Eluard (fig. 3). This artwork was painted in 1929 is also an oil on canvas. It can be
found in the Dali Theatre and Museum, Figueres, Spain. The dimensions of Portrait de Paul Eluard
(fig. 3) are 33 x 25 cm. The painting is of a man named Paul Eluard and is full of multiple objects
that are all very abstract. The background is plain with a blue sky that fades from blue to white. The
ground is a faded yet delicate brown. In the foreground there is much more detail. There

Incongruity In Kate Chopin's 'The Story Of An Hour'
A statement from Patrick Rothfuss states "We understand how dangerous a mask can be. We all
become what we pretend to be.". Two writers from the 1800s, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Kate
Chopin created a lot of compositions that really indicated how much individuals, particularly
women, and African Americans needed to shroud themselves, or wear a "mask" with a specific end
goal to be acknowledged by the overall population among their time. In numerous works of writing,
realist writers shape subjects for a bigger political and social discourse. Kate Chopin, writer of "The
Story of a Hour" utilized situational incongruity and inferences to pass on her message to her
readers. In the meantime, Paul Laurence Dunbar utilized metaphorical dialect to maneuver ... Show

In the ballad, "We Wear The Mask", by the American writer Paul L. Dunbar, he portrays how life in
the 1800s for individuals, or especially African Americans were genuinely intense circumstances in
America. A lot of changes were happening, and numerous people had a troublesome time grappling
with them. African Americans, specifically, got themselves captured in a culture that showed up
fairly better to anything it had been previously amongst the Civil War. Yet, the truth was that things
were as yet out of line. "We Wear The Mask" is a poem that portrays all of the pretending and the
truth that hides behind it. We get a feeling that the fact of the matter is a fairly painful one, so
individuals wear "masks" to shroud the repulsive truth. After the Civil War, numerous African
Americans were left still abused by alternate races regardless of the thirteenth amendment being
passed. With this, they're caught alone with just their thoughts and minds. Dunbar's title "We Wear
The Mask" is a metaphor in itself since individuals wear "masks" to conceal their actual personality,
so these individuals were concealing their actual considerations and sentiments behind a
metaphorical "mask". In one of the lines of the poem, Dunbar expresses "We smile but oh, great
Christ our cries". (Dunbar 654) I think the principle reason Dunbar composed this line the way he
did is on

Bipolar Reflection
Over a year ago, I was diagnosed with a mental illness called bipolar disorder. It wasn't as much as a
shock when they explained it to me, for I always had that slight suspicion that I might be bipolar.
Although the condition has always been there with me, the symptoms were more apparent to me
after that day. This condition has made it really hard for me to function in school and at home. For a
while now, I've let it completely take me over because I didn't want to bother fighting something
that felt stronger than me. I don't think people truly understand how this affects me. Especially my
parents, they'd refuse to accept that I have bipolar disorder. Trust me, I wouldn't want it either but it
isn't something I can ignore. For years, I've made various attempts at guiding my parent's attention
to this. What finally made them realize how serious this was to me was my art. Art has helped me
through a lot ever since I started getting depressed, so I see it fit to make my concept based on I feel.
The picture will be one I've taken for a different assignment similar to this one. It will be split into

be perfect in capturing the mood when one is depressed. White would give off a sense of purity and
happiness. Although yellow might be the ideal color of happiness, I feel as if white better displays

Warm And Cool Colors In She-Ba By Romarrire Bearden
Every situation in life is full of emotions, moods, and even physical sensations. Emotions, are
essential for all human beings and are also part of our world. All emotions are influenced by the
colors that surround us. To initiate discussing about warm and cool colors, we need to define which
color belongs to each group, for the warm colors are red, orange, and yellow, and cool colors are
blue, green and light purple. First example, Romare Bearden's She–ba painting, an African–
American artist born in North Carolina. This is one painting that shows both warm and cool colors.
She–ba, is an art piece that has blocks of color that contrast in areas of red, yellow and orange
combination of cool blues and greens. Without doubt, this artwork reflects

I chose to use glitter around my eyes because I used to visit my grandparents every week. Even if I

because pearls represent imperfection to me. Most people think that pearls are always round and
perfect but that is very rare. Almost always they are oval or irregularly shaped but by just looking at
them they look perfect and like what everyone expects. To me that is like most people including
myself, they look like nothing is wrong but if you look closer you can see all the imperfections.
Nobody is perfect but most of us like to pretend that we are. In my case I try to seem like I am
always happy and optimistic and sometimes I really am but most of the time I am just trying to get
through the day. I also never try to hide this but most people never notice because most of the time I
am so quiet and shy. In reality if someone were to just ask me I would tell them exactly what is
going on but no one ever asks. The pearl is imperfect just like I am. We both have flaws that can be

What Does Tiresias Represent In Twelfth Night
Tiresias first appeared during the play in scene 5. In page 1098, he entered the stage and had a
conversation with Creon in this scene. In the mask, Tiresias eyes appear entirely blue. However, we
know that Tiresias is blind when the stage directions said so in the beginning of the scene (enter
blind Tiresias, led by a boy). Despite knowing that he is blind, I chose that his eyes appear entirely
blue. This is because the color blue filling Tiresias's eyes represent the ocean. The ocean here
symbolizes life. Life can be harsh like the crashing waves of the ocean while other times it can be
stable like the calm waves. Tiresias is a blind prophet who can deliver prophecies that will happen in
the future; therefore, he can see life. Tiresias said,

Mattes, Alpha Channels And Masks
In the below written essay I will explain the purpose of Mattes, Alpha channels and Masks. I will
also explain how and why they are used.
"Adobe After Effects" uses "mattes" as an "invisible" layer which can control the opacity of the
image above the matte layer. If there is an image visible and another image layered beneath that
image, a matte can be used in certain ways to manipulate that image. (Tobias, 2012)
Although a matte is an "invisible layer" it allows a determined amount of luminance or colour to
push through from the bottom layer to the top layer. In a way a matte can be thought of as fading to
images on top of each other, although mattes are a bit more complex.
Mattes can also be used to separate a background image from a foreground image. For instance, if
and actor is standing in a room and you want to change the background image, a matte can be used
to change the background. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Mattes can also be used to "animate text". If you have one image as a layer above a different image
(acting as the bottom layer) you can add text as a matte and allow the bottom image layer to be seen
through the text. This gives the text a more interesting and original look. (Adobe Systems
Incorporated, n.d.)
The word alpha means transparency. The Alpha Channel is essentially the "channel that carries
transparency information." (Okun & Zwerman, 2010, p. 125)
The colours that are visible in the images on programs like Photoshop and Adobe After Effects are
usually split up into three different channels. There is a Red channel (R), a green channel (G) and
blue channel (B). These channels are often grouped and named RGB channels.
The RGB channels are what make up the colours of an image. In addition to these channels there is
another channel called the Alpha Channel which is a channel that deals with the opacity and
transparency of the Red, Green and Blue

Mask Explanation
Mask Explanation and/or Reflection There are multiple different symbols and hidden meanings on
my mask. These symbols mainly have to do with events from the past and my current state in the
present. When one looks upon the mask, the first thing they may notice is the black line going down
the middle, separating the past from present. Another good distinction between the past and present
are the words written on the both halves of the mask. On the brighter, more "positive" side, there lie
the words "don't look back," as if symbolizing the necessity to move forward in life. The other, more
"negative" side of the mask has the words "look ahead," once again the symbolizing the need to
move, and the need to draw attention away from the bad side ... Show more content on

the peace I managed to attain with myself. On top of the eyebrow, there are two symbols (the soccer

achieve my goals. The significant colors I used for the good side of the mask are blue, orange, red,

The Contents of the Tomb and What They Suggest About Life in Ancient Egypt at the Time of

gained from the tombs conclusions can be drawn about religion and the afterlife, the everyday life
of ancient Egyptians, of Government during the five hundred year period, and of the arts and

The idea that the in order to reach immortality, one must go through a journey, as symbolised by a
journey on a celestial boat through the heavens is another indication of their religious beliefs. The
portrait head of Tutankhamun rising out of a blue lotus flower, reflects the Egyptian belief that life
grew out of a primeval mound, as a result of observing the annual flooding of the Nile. This creation
myth is at the heart of many of their religious myths. The golden burial mask, sheds light on the
Egyptian belief in the afterlife, as one which in its initial stage as being dangerous because the
presence of the cobras (ureus) is there to spit venom into anyone who might harm the king. The
ornate quality of this mask reflects a deeply seated notion of the afterlife. The fact that the mask is
supposed to protect the body reflects the Egyptian belief in the afterlife where bodies need to be
preserved in order to unify the physical components of the body with its ka. The ankh, which
Tutankhamun holds, and the presence of the god Khephri is a reflection of the belief that death is a
rebirth into the next world. The wooden miniature effigy of the king, placed in tombs as a substitute
for the deceased in case the god Osiris orders him to perform manual labour in the next life is
indicative of a very strong belief in the afterlife. The presence of the canopic shrine, protected by

American Art Collection At The Fred Jones Jr. Museum Of Art
As I explored the James T. Bialac Native American Art Collection at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of
Art, I came across two paintings that really stood out to me because of their relevance to what we
have been learning in class. In muted tones of blue and yellow, Harry Oosahwee's (Cherokee) One
Fall Morning depicts a Cherokee family in a barren rural landscape; animals and plants dot the
landscape, and a small wooden house sits on the far right of the painting accompanied by a father,
mother, and child to the left. Oosahwee painted this acrylic on paper painting in 1980; although the
image of this photo appears old, due to the architecture and clothing, there is one clue that brings the
painting to the 20th century – the Chuck Taylor's on the mother's feet. Without the presence of the
shoes, this painting could appear to be from any era, as the Cherokee family is performing
traditional activities that have been passed down generation to generation. A father in denim overalls
and a wide brim hat sits on a tree stump, carving a piece of wood, while a young child looks up at
him enthralled in what the father is doing or saying. To the left of the father and child is the mother
standing above a churn; wearing a traditional smock and being watched by the family dog as she
prepares kanuchi. Aside from the dog, there are also a few chickens pecking at the ground to the left
of the mother, birds in the sky, and a cat near the bottom right observing everything going on. I think

Captain American Speech: Captain America
Captain America Speech
He goes by the name Steve Rogers or the greatest soldier in history and if you still don't know who
he is then maybe you'll know him by his original name "Super America". Okay never mind,
probably not because the creators realised that it didn't sound good as too many Marvel Superheroes
had the word "Super" in them and so they finally agreed on "Captain America" which clearly sounds
much better than Super America.
Captain America is a fictional Marvel Superhero which was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in
1941. He was known as Steve Rogers at first, but because of his bravery and compassion, a scientist
created the Super Solider Serum which enhanced Steve Rogers' human potentials and thus gave
birth to Captain America. The characterisation of Captain America was influenced by political social
injustice during the 20th century. Captain America, obviously being American who is part of the
Allied Powers, fought against the Axis Powers which consisted of Germany, Italy and Japan.
Captain America is seen as a heroic icon in WW2 as well as in the battles against Communism. The
Superhero, Captain America, was thus used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the original one. Here, he wears a helmet with the letter "A" and wings printed on it instead of a

down up to his waist. White stars have also been added to his gloves.
In 1990 another Captain America film was released where Matt Salinger stars as Captain America.
The costume has not evolved but has rather gone back to the original costume design. The mask is
back as well as the positioning of the stripes is like that of the comic book version. There is however

Comparison Of Wilfredo Lam

  • 1. Comparison Of Wilfredo Lam Comparison of Primitivist imagery in Wilfredo Lam's Untitled, 1953 and Matta's Untitled (Flying People Eaters), 1942. Wilfredo Lam's Untitled, 1953 and Matta's Untitled (Flying People Eaters), 1942 share a wall in gallery 397 of the AIC. The two drawings were completed within 12 years of each other, and they seem be in conversation as surrealist compositions. Both pieces incorporate primitivist imagery into their engagement with the surreal. However, where Matta uses this imagery to further Freudian shock value and bring forward abject discomfort, Lam uses "primitive" symbology to discuss notions of Afro–Cuban identity through a cubist and surreal lens. Untitled, 1953 is a graphite drawing on cream wove paper. The paper has a visible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This figure's body is cropped, leaving the viewer with only its torso and head. While portions of this figure's body are more humanoid than the previous, (a pronounced shoulder and breast ground the character) once we move up from these shoulders the body seems to break into geometric abstraction. A spiky neck extends and transforms into a sort of scaffolding to hold up the mask–face. This figure is also decorated with flowers and hair like protrusions, suggesting an almost ritualistic garb. Taking up the entire right side of the composition a third character ascends a staircase and rests one hand on a disjointed platform. This figure wears an elaborate headdress, fabric sash and holds a large knife tucked at it's side. The figure's long toes curl around the top stair where it stands surveying the other two figures. This figure also has a tail, and the same mirroring happens between the extending hairs of the headdress and the hairs of its tail as with the candle light and tail of the first figure. The decorations and prominence of this figure give it an air of spiritual significance, the word priest seems apt. Behind this figure is the forth and final figure of the composition. This figure stands lower on the staircase behind the figure with the knife. This figure has a head shaped like a goblet filled with toothpicks. We only see the head and shoulders of this figure, ... • 2. Personal Narrative: Representing The World The outside of my mask represents what I show or represent the world. The blue on my mask represent my calm and relaxed thoughts. Several people have told me that I seem relaxed all the time. Also, the blue represents positive thoughts, since I seem to be always positive outside. The eyes are closed also because I looked relaxed and calmed. The zipper symbolizes how I am introverted and shy. I would not talk unless you talk to me. My archetype is the caregiver, I do love taking care of other people more than me. These are the personas I show the world. The inside of my mask represents what I hide within me. The black represent every negative thoughts. Also, the black represents all the worry and anxiety I feel. I may be positive outside, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparing The Painting Bathers And Andre Derain's Blue Nude Wright 2 Henri Matisse and Andre Derain were a part of multiple art movements and they created very controversial artwork using the ideas of Primitivism. They're also the founders of Fauvism, that's why they wanted to incorporate color and structure into their art. They wanted the colors themselves to evoke emotion, without it having to relate back to the natural world. In Blue Nude and Bathers, they achieved this goal successfully. I think that Matisse's Blue Nude painting was inspiration for Derain's painting Bathers. They both depict naked women lying outside, however Blue Nude was painted first. After analyzing these two pieces, I've concluded that Henri Matisse's Blue Nude painting (1907) & Andre Derain's painting Bathers (1908) were both influential representations of the primitive ideas prevalent at the time through their use of overt sexuality & their imitation of African masks. Both of these paintings display the freedom of sexuality. Blue Nude even has a sexual title. The woman is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They both want the viewer to focus more on the colors, lines, and brush strokes, instead of the image itself. They both wanted their work to speak for itself and it did. Ultimately, Bathers was favored more than Blue Nude. I think that they're both conversation pieces and are explicit paintings, but the audiences at that time were more upset about them. The flatness of Bathers is quite interesting. Because it's hard to tell where the light source is coming from, or if there even is a light source. While Blue Nude makes it easier for the viewer to see that the light source is coming from the left side. Both paintings utilize blue paint, but Blue Nude uses it more harshly than Bathers. Blue Nude has the blue paint surrounding the nude lady while Bathers has the blue paint surrounding only a few ladies. I think that Derain's Bathers wanted to somewhat imitate Matisse's Blue Nude in a very creative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Egypt Burial Process When I was 9, I was very interested in early civilizations and their various cultures. Among the many beautiful heritages I read about, Egypt was one of my favorite. From the many gods to worship to the architecture to the language to the infamous curses to the extravagant burial, I was completely hooked. This specific mask however, stood out amongst the rest. I remember spending days and days thinking of the cursed tomb and of the teen boy found at that site. I remember wondering how a 9 year old, could rule a whole country. I had wanted to become a archaeologist because of this specific story surrounding the mask. I was enthralled by the egyptians detailed belief of the afterlife and especially their burial process. • 5. Masks In Hamlet The character that I have chosen to design a mask for is Hamlet. In my mask design I have chosen the colour blue, a noose and a dagger. I chose the colour blue because blue represents depression; throughout the play Hamlet shows many signs of being depressed. After Hamlet's father's death, Hamlet went into a mode of not having anything to live for. He himself would rather have died than live in a world where someone who is so corrupted ruled. Hamlet was very depressed that he said "O, that this too too sullied flesh would melt Thaw and resolve it'self into a dew," (I. ii. 131–132). Hamlet would have killed himself if it was not a sin. The next symbol that i have chosen is a noose. I chose the noose because one of the main motifs in the play ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Comparing Black And Blue, And They Wear The Mask "Black And Blue", by Louis Armstrong and "We Wear The Mask", by Paul Laurence Dunbar both take a further meaning in a profound way of Ellison's work. Louis Armstrong poetically writes "what did I do? Tell me, what did I do to be so black and blue?" The way in which it flows suggests that Armstrong brings what happens in society (desegregation) and incorporates it into his lyrics. The tempo of the song makes me question, was he sad or happy. Are the lyrics making him out to be black or white? "Black and Blue" is a completely different concept and teaching from "We Wear The Mask", being that they want to hide their emotions with a different face. Armstrong sings "I'm white on the inside, but that doesn't help my case Cause I can't hide what is on my face" his emotions pour out of emptiness on the inside and he can't help but show it on face. ... This invisibleness, that the nameless narrator feels doesn't come until the end of his pilgrimage, and to where the holes introduced and honestly I still don't understand how one day he's a 'real'/visible person and then all of a sudden becoming invisible and finding a "hole". The song "Paper doll" by The Mills Brothers, that Patty introduced in class opens up another way of thinking when it says "I'm gonna buy a Paper Doll that I can call my own," most of the class thought that he was buying his own doll, a plastic doll to talk to. My first thought was that this could be related to today with men wanting to have a trophy wife, and the husband can work and bring home all the money, while the wife stays home and looks pretty. • 7. Edwards Snow Summary Both articles address the use of the color blue almost immediately, and each's beliefs conflicts with the other. In the first article by Edwards Snow, he clearly states, "The historical context of childrens games yields neither a unified period consciousness nor a set of stable sixteenth–century "beliefs".p.43 Snow clearly states that the information provided various sources in regards to the use of color must therefore be taken with a grain of salt, as none of them can with a one–hundred percent certainty be certain. He follows with, "The color iconography at a medieval or renaissance artist disposal was so polyvalent that scarcely ever is the prominent use of a certain color sufficient in and of itself to establish the emblematic significance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Snow speaks about age in the beginning of his article when he talks about mask, and how the pairing between the child and the masked character represent different perspectives on ow to view the world. "The face on the right epitomizes the ingenious gaze... adult mask, on the other hand, peers intently on the scene below, but with a misanthropic scowl that is ingrained in its features, and with eyes that are as empty and incapable of vision as the small child's wistful gaze."28 Snow believes that Bruegel uses the masks to represent two different age perspectives on the same scene, and claims that while an innocent may view what is happening below with a sense of delight, the masked figure does not. This is later supported by the idea that, "Mask shows childhood growing into ugly., predetermined adult forms. and at the same time pictures the misanthropic, "supervisory" point of the view where this sense of things originates; the face on the right reciprocates by picturing childhood innocence as "weak and passively vulnerable to corruption." p.28 Hindsman on the other hand sees age as a way to represent the passage of seasons and how that correlates with growing older. Starting with a reference to a religious holiday, and how that correlates to the next season which moves into ideas about love and marriage and how that is followed later by a baptismal, which is a progression of event that happen over time as one gets older. Hindsman also points out previous work by Bruegel, where he uses the passage of months to represent the passage of time for men as they traverse from "adolescence (into) manhood" ... As I was cleaning it out I found some dead rats and mice. There were a lot of boxes but one of them stood out. In the old box was a mask. I lifted the mask from the box and admired its beauty. I feel like the mask was a magical mask. I feel like it would bring good things to me. The colors are amazing red, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, gray, and pink. • 9. How Did Pablo Picasso Impact The World Pablo Picasso arrived in Paris in the year 1900 at the age of just 19, and within a few years he became a well–known artist and a dominating figure in the world of modern art movement. The one piece of art that he produced in 1906 through 1907 was the Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and would change the word of art forever. This became the piece art that helped launch Cubism and a whole new artistic expression. Because of this art and many other, Pablo Picasso has become one of the most important figure of 20th century, in terms of art, and art movements that occurred over this period. This Spanish born artist had a distinct style and eye for artistic creation. There had been no other artists, prior to Picasso, who had such an impact on the art world. The hair of the young lady is also more visible as it drapes down her back. By repositioning her arm and adding the mask he completely changed her appearance, not only in her face but her body as well. Picasso gave her a double point of view, as you look at her nose and the angles it provides. The hand under the chin gives it an almost claw like feature, with what seems to be her fingers going to her eye to her the opposite side of the chin. With the sharp angles and mask and all the distortion it would be difficult to truly see just the young lady. It is almost as if she is shards of glass pieced together to make a ... • 10. An Analysis Of La Persistencia De La Memoria Another surrealist work of art by Salvador Dali is La Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2). It was painted in 1931, and is an oil on canvas. The painting can be found at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, NY, with dimensions of 33 x 24.1 cm. La Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2) is Salvador Dali's most famous painting. The oil painting is set in a desert area with a lake or pond casting off into the background. The rocks in the background are very sharp but the rest of the background is smooth. Finally, the white figure has a smooth exterior with the lashes looking like actual hair. Salvador Dali's painting, La Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2), represents the scientific Freudian influence. Everything appears to be in a dream–like state because nothing makes logical sense (Eggener 36). Each clock represents a different time in life, whether it is his past, is current state, or his future. The jagged cracks in the mountains symbolize the rough patches or cracks that one must go through in life and the reflections in the water and platform show how those mistakes reflect who we are. The dead tree shows that eventually we all will grow old and die. Lastly, the white figure is Salvador Dali and how his life is slowly ticking away as well and the eyes are shut because he is reflecting on it in a dream. The final artwork of Salvador Dali's that exemplifies Surrealism is Portrait de Paul Eluard (fig. 3). This artwork was painted in 1929 is also an oil on canvas. It can be found in the Dali Theatre and Museum, Figueres, Spain. The dimensions of Portrait de Paul Eluard (fig. 3) are 33 x 25 cm. • 11. The Blue Green Anesthesia Mask Essay As I'm wheeled through the silver doors into the sterile white operating room, I begin to panic. This is my first surgery, and I feel as if I am in a living nightmare. Before I can even think about it, the nurses guide me onto the skinny white operating room bed. A few seconds later, the blue–green anesthesia mask is put on my face, and I feel like I am going underwater with my eyes closed. Then everything around me goes completely black. I was diagnosed with a rare, non–agressive type of skin cancer on my scalp in 2011. Soon after diagnosis, I underwent an MRI to see exactly how big the cancer was. Fortunately, it was only the size of a pencil eraser. After seeing countless doctors, we (my parents and I) finally decided to see a surgeon specializing in cancer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. We met with the cancer surgeon (Dr. Wayne), and he agreed to remove the cancer. We also saw a plastic surgeon (Dr. Kim) the same day to discuss reconstruction options so that my scalp would look as normal as possible after the surgery. My surgery is scheduled for the morning of February 8, 2012 at 7 AM; however, we need to arrive at the hospital at 5:30 to start the preparation process. As we walk through the Outpatient Surgery unit doors, I immediately notice the amount of chaos surrounding the unit. You wouldn't know that it was only 5:30 AM with all the noise! Some examples of evil are anonymously emailing death threats, suing someone who did nothing wrong in order to try to collect a big payday and passing on information that you know is a lie about a political opponent. These are not truly evil, they are mainly rude. The mask I made shows that there are 2 different faces. It represents that most evil people have 2 faces. (They wear a fake face while they also wear another face at different times.) An evil person is a person who harms people out of hatred. However, in many places in the world right now and in Shakespeare's time, not everyone had this right and were restricted to speak their mind. Except Feste the clown. In Twelfth Night, we can see that the only position that isn't high ranking and were allowed to say what they wanted was a jester (fool). For example, while talking to Olivia, he says "The more fool, madonna, to mourn for your brother's soul being in heaven. Take the fool away, gentlemen," which means he is saying that Olivia is stupid for mourning for her brother, something a normal citizen at the time wouldn't have been able to say. From this, is it clear that he uses his profession as a figurative mask to excuse a lot of what he says. Although Feste is a clown, he is one of Shakespeare's ironies meaning that he is very intelligent on the inside, thus a lot of what he says is true. This relates to the Essential Question because many people in real life do/did not have this basic human right. For example, in World War II, the Nazi's restricted the Jews to have rights and wanted to rid the entire race. The only way the Jews could protect themselves is to disguise themselves as another race. This helped the Jews gain rights of speech and many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He began his reign when he was only 9! He reigned for about 10 years and soon died. Most scientists have concluded that the most likely cause of his death was from a broken leg but there are several valid reasons that makes the answer never for certain. His death mask was an important artefact in history. It was bright, shiny yellow and blue. It was heavy (nearly 11 kilograms) and made of actual gold as well as lapis lazuli. It was made by two sheets of gold hammered together. It covered the head of the deceased pharaoh's mummy. This was done too ensure that the spirit of the dead person would recognise their body. The Blue Mask by Lou Reed Lou Reed's, The Blue Mask Although the visionary singer, song writer, Lou Reed, gained his fame in the 70's, he reached the highest peak of his career with the album "The Blue Mask," in which he explored the elements of human flaws. With this album, he stripped down from his dramatic work in the 70's and explored new techniques along with his small, tight–knit band. "The Blue Mask" received excellent reviews from critics and consumers because it allowed listeners to have a personal connection with Reed and showed them a different side apart from the public persona. Overall, the achievements and praise were well deserved for the hard work he and his band put in. Lou Reed, a New York native, attended the University of Syracuse and studied poetry and journalism. He later became the lead singer for the band, Velvet Underground during the 60's. He is commonly known today as the one who started the punk rock era and "also brought a stormy dissonance to the foreground, helping to expand the vocabulary of the electric guitar" (Rolling Stone Bio). He broke away from his partnership with Velvet Underground and headed for England in pursuit of a solo career. Over a decade later, he released the album, The Blue Mask. • 27. Rhetorical Devices Of `` We Wear The Mask `` And `` Harlem `` In literature, rhetorical devices are primarily used to convey a particular feeling or action to the reader. Through the use of rhetorical devices such as imagery, description, and metaphorical allusion, the author gives the reader the ability to connect with the text on a more intimate level that otherwise would not have been achieved without the use of them. Subsequently, Harlem Renaissance writers such as Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Langston Hughes employed the rhetorical devices of imagery, description and metaphorical allusion to convey the egregious realities of the black experience in the United States during the early twentieth century. In writings such as, "We Wear the Mask" by Paul Lawrence Dunbar and "Harlem" by Langston Hughes, the use of rhetorical devices gives each writer the ability to provide commentary on the social, economic, and political circumstances that African–Americans faced in inner–city Harlem during the turn of the twentieth century. In "We Wear the Mask", Dunbar primarily employs the rhetorical device of metaphorical allusion to give the reader a sense of how African–Americans navigated socially in a traditionally white supremacist, patriarchal society. He begins his poem, with "We wear the mask that grins and lies, it hides are cheeks and shades our eyes" (Dunbar, "We Wear the Mask"). Dunbar, he portrays how life in the 1800s for individuals, or especially African Americans were genuinely intense circumstances in America. A lot of changes were happening, and numerous people had a troublesome time grappling with them. African Americans, specifically, got themselves captured in a culture that showed up fairly better to anything it had been previously amongst the Civil War. Yet, the truth was that things were as yet out of line. "We Wear The Mask" is a poem that portrays all of the pretending and the truth that hides behind it. After the Civil War, numerous African Americans were left still abused by alternate races regardless of the thirteenth amendment being passed. With this, they're caught alone with just their thoughts and minds. Dunbar's title "We Wear The Mask" is a metaphor in itself since individuals wear "masks" to conceal their actual personality, so these individuals were concealing their actual considerations and sentiments behind a metaphorical "mask". "Adobe After Effects" uses "mattes" as an "invisible" layer which can control the opacity of the image above the matte layer. If there is an image visible and another image layered beneath that image, a matte can be used in certain ways to manipulate that image. (Tobias, 2012) Although a matte is an "invisible layer" it allows a determined amount of luminance or colour to push through from the bottom layer to the top layer. In a way a matte can be thought of as fading to images on top of each other, although mattes are a bit more complex. Mattes can also be used to separate a background image from a foreground image. For instance, if and actor is standing in a room and you want to change the background image, a matte can be used to change the background. ... Bialac Native American Art Collection at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, I came across two paintings that really stood out to me because of their relevance to what we have been learning in class. In muted tones of blue and yellow, Harry Oosahwee's (Cherokee) One Fall Morning depicts a Cherokee family in a barren rural landscape; animals and plants dot the landscape, and a small wooden house sits on the far right of the painting accompanied by a father, mother, and child to the left. Oosahwee painted this acrylic on paper painting in 1980; although the image of this photo appears old, due to the architecture and clothing, there is one clue that brings the painting to the 20th century – the Chuck Taylor's on the mother's feet. Without the presence of the shoes, this painting could appear to be from any era, as the Cherokee family is performing traditional activities that have been passed down generation to generation. A father in denim overalls and a wide brim hat sits on a tree stump, carving a piece of wood, while a young child looks up at him enthralled in what the father is doing or saying. To the left of the father and child is the mother standing above a churn; wearing a traditional smock and being watched by the family dog as she prepares kanuchi.
