- 1. Avilés appears for the first time in written documents in 905. In that time the city was already very important due to its port
- 2. St. Nicolas de Bari church was the main building of the city in the 13th Century when 1,200 inhabitants lived in Avilés
- 3. In the middle age Avilés had a lot of activity but by the end of this period of history the city was in decline
- 4. Avilés took part in the Spanish conquest of America with Pedro Menendez who was sent by King Felipe II to conquer Florida in the 16th Century
- 6. In 1890 the train was brought to Avilés and it was the begining of our industrial development
- 7. In 1950 Ensidesa, a steel factory, was created by the goverment and many people came from the rest of Spain to work here
- 8. Nowadays Avilés is mostly an industrial city yet and its port has quite a lot of activity but it is not as important as it was in the past
