2. DISTANCE UNIVERSITY
The VIU was essentially conceived as a university of western
culture and methodology, based on European educational
philosophy, maintained from Plato to our times by way of
Bologna.
But the VIU will not be face to face; it does not call for the
physical gathering of learners around the lecturer, since this
principle of the classic academy, demanded by the limitations of
direct verbal communication, is no longer needed in the VIU,
where classroom sessions are replaced by remote connection
through digital communication networks .
3. LEARNING ASSESSMENT
The VIU, like any other traditional university, will have lecturers and
highly skilled professionals, structuring their lessons to be
understood and learned by the students.
However, it will add a new feature to the general university system;
the VIU will examine and assess the progress of its students
continuously, lesson by lesson, keeping up a stimulating dialogue to
help them optimise their efforts and succeed in their projects.
Moreover, the VIU is a university that will give its students
personalised guidance in their course itineraries by the approaches
most suited to their wishes, expectations, talent, and qualities.

5. COMPOSITION OF A VIU CREDIT

The system of progressing until achieving a
degree consists of following a process of
collection of educational units or lessons.
When starting out, the student receives a
map explaining which educational units
they need to obtain different degrees, and
in which order, if necessary, they are to be
studied.
Each section of the collection makes up a
credit.

7. THE VIU IS A UNIVERSITY FOR THE STUDENT
Every lecturer from each university in the VIU consortium will
therefore be able to create their own lessons constituting a valid
credit for certain courses. Lessons will be given to VIU students
duly structured, as explained previously, so that the students
understand the credit value of each of them. The students can
then choose which lessons to study and with whom, according
to their own personality.
Lessons learned from the same lecturer, or university, will
constitute a "simple" credit, and lessons studied under different
lecturers from different universities will constitute a "combined"
credit, both with identical value in terms of the course.
In the VIU, the student will be able to receive any lesson from
any lecturer in the consortium, or even the same lesson from
several lecturers from participating universities, but any of them
will count equally towards their credits, and finally their degree.
8. THE VIU IS A UNIVERSITY FOR THE STUDENT
WITH PERSONALITY
In line with the declarations of Bologna and Anglo-Saxon university
tradition, students must be free to earn higher education credits
through lessons from different sources …

9. THE VIU ASSESSES AND GUIDES STUDENTS
LESSON BY LESSON
One of the exemplary features of the VIU is the way the studies are
organised for the learners. Whenever a student accesses a
lesson or decides to sign up for a subject, or even a course, they
are given the chance to respond to a prior evaluation test, where
they are assessed on the following basis:
1) If they show sufficient preparation to make good use of the
knowledge they wish to access.
2) How many versions of the subject they want to study are available
in the VIU consortium.
3) Which curriculum will give credits for the content they wish to
access.
4) What the grades for each of these courses will be worth to them.
10. THE VIU ASSESSES AND GUIDES STUDENTS
LESSON BY LESSON
After this ex-ante evaluation, they will have access to the content,
arranged as lessons, which may be on file or live, according to a
calendar described in the catalogue of versions available.
After each lesson is received, the student, via the network, responds
to an ex-post evaluation, from which they obtain a grade of their
level of understanding valid for the calculation of studies with the
consideration of credits for each degree to which they may aspire.
After each ex-post evaluation, the student receives a report detailing
their progress towards each of the qualifications, as well as optional
tutorials by dialogue via Internet in the language and schedules
agreed.
11. CERTIFICATIONS AND DEGREES
The VIU is a university where officially recognised
certificates and degrees can be obtained, from the VIU, while
fostering the achievement of official qualifications from
associated universities, in the purest spirit of the European
higher education convergence process started up as a result
of the Declaration of Bologna in 1999.

united in a consortium, including studies from all over the
world under its auspices, through cooperation agreements
with the different Universities to grant official and own
credits and qualifications from each university and country
integrated in the partnership.

incorporation of whichever universities feel inclined and prepared to join
the association, at the time they deem advisable in their own interests. For
example: the Western Governors University consortium, in the USA,
brought together 50 universities in 30 states over a 6 year period.

A student from the Valencian Community will be able to study,
without moving from the Community, at any university in the
Valencian Region, or in Spain, or Europe, or North America, or
any other country with a university included in the VIU
consortium.
Likewise, any student from anywhere in the world will be able
to study, from any place in the world, at any of the seven
universities of the Valencian Community united in partnership
with the VIU.
This consortial nature is one of the VIU’s defining features,
like in universities already experienced, such as Phoenix and
Western Governors in the USA, or Helsinki in Europe.

Peer acknowledgement of the teachings is fundamental in the VIU.
This mutual recognition specifically takes shape in the universal
system of calculation of the studies undertaken, in other words:
In line with European convergence proposals, the subjects studied are
segmented in lessons, which in turn are ordered in thematic packages
or credits with international equivalence, in such a way that the
degrees are obtained when the student has earned all the credits
required for a curriculum, in amount and quality, but regardless of their
origin.
In this sense, the personality of the VIU stems from the fact that the
students can choose the lessons and the credits they wish from
among all the equivalents offered by all the universities in the
consortium.
A credit from the VIU, and therefore from the consortium, may be
earned with lessons learned under any professor in the consortium.
