Institutional context

The cast of the movie is written in Portuguese

Miramax film company logo connotes a big budget film

The fact that it is different language shows that its going to show a different culture to ours, but the Miramax logo shows its funded by an American company

 3. 3. Identifying genre

Its initially crime but fused with gangster action thriller and has a documentary feel

Themes suggest a corrupted society and one of fighting to survive.

It’s a subculture hybrid genre film because it has a lots of different types of genres fused into one

Mis en scene: setting brazil, a rural urban area and poverty is shown through the dusty streets and props in the scene

Costume: poorly dressed rags, no shoes, dirty ripped clothing

Props small shacks, gas trucks knifes

Camera work: cut scenes and flashes of different, often gruesome things happening to show the everyday life of the culture.

Zooming in on chickens about to be killed, showing them tied up

 4. 4. Identifying genre

Sound: diagetic: chicken noises, the knife noises, the shouting of people in the city market

Sound: non diagetic: there was a second piece of music which was added after, used to build up the action as they chased the chicken.

Editing and special effects: there was no special effects, as the film was trying to convey the realism of the Brazilian slums.

 5. 5. Analyzing Character and narrative

Subtitles were the narrative details that were given in the sequence because the film is not in English

The main themes of the film were gangsters and living in poverty, trying to survive.

Characters are presented through the protagonists point of view, through narrative speech. This is non diagetic sound as it is a voice over.

The audience will question the desperation of the people as they hunt one chicken. We also ask what's going to happen to rocket as he is faced with two armed gangs

 6. 6. Analysing continuity techniques

Match on action: when rocket looks at the police and the gangs

Shot reverse shot: there is no conversation, and no shot reverse shot

Synchronous sound: there was a rythem based song over the top, and the people ran in time i.e they quickened there pace as the tempo of the music sped up.

 7. 7. Analysing representation

Shows the transition between childhood and adolescents, with social groups of gangs and the pressures to be part of one.
