Tolerance In The United States
Tolerance is the ability to accept things that we particularly don't agree with in regards to other
people's: opinions, actions, religions, and way of life. The flag representing the United States of
America means and abundance of things to many different americans. For instance, the phrase "life,
liberty, and pursuit of happiness" embodies the representations of the flag. Ashuman beings we have
different perspectives which causes conflict, in order to resolve this conflict we have to have
tolerance for each others differences.
The ability to relate and express tolerance can sometimes have people conflicted. This is due to
their own systems of beliefs and actions. But, it is necessary to show and tolerate other people's
beliefs and actions it doesn't necessarily mean you are in an agreement. In ''Texas v Johnson'' the
article states that him burning the flag was a ''symbolic speech'' it's symbolic because it's his beliefs
and how he feels about the flag. We cannot change what Johnson feels about the flag, and we should
not judge we should just...show more content...
So instead of tolerating them we should ignore them and stay in our ''social group''. But in a project
called ''My So–Called Enemy'', Girls that are from different countries that are in a war are put
under one roof. They do this so they can get a better understanding of each other, so it's not just
one sided. These girls that were taught to hate each other were taught to dislike each other learned
to tolerate each other so why can't we. The answer is that we don't know how to tolerate others it's
like the phrase '' my way or the highway'', It shows how stubborn we are also it shows that we can't
come to an understanding nother less wanting to understand our differences. Which is exactly why
we need tolerance, it's like the solution to our

Too much Tolerance Essay
Too much Tolerance
Dogmatic Tolerance = Hypocritical
Tolerance. It is a word synonymous with peace, good will, brotherly love, acceptance and
forgiveness. It is a virtue that is essential in a world filled with racial and religious discrimination.
But at the same time tolerance, or, more specifically, the modern, politically correct definition of
tolerance, holds some very dangerous pitfalls which, if our government, and we, as a people are not
careful of, could be crippling to the individualism, and the religious diversity of Canada, and the
world.
The dictionary definition of tolerance is: "The capacity for, or the practice of recognizing and
respecting the beliefs or practices of others", but the definition has become much,...show more

But incompatibility will be wiped away, and anything that is sure, or real will be snuffed out as
narrow–mindedness.
You see, complete tolerance is impossible. By being so dogmatically tolerant as to state that there is
no complete truth, is to, because of the nature of that statement, exclude, or be intolerant towards
those whose beliefs state otherwise. Complete tolerance is an oxymoron, and is incompatible with
many religious beliefs including Christianities, whose bible clearly states that it is the 'only true
religion'. In that case, total tolerance is not only impossible, it also limits the ability of many to
worship fully in their religion. The government is passing through various bills and amendments that
are pushed through in the name of tolerance, but, in fact, according to the true definition – if it is
still permissible to say such a thing – these bills are decreasing the amount of tolerance that our
government has towards groups whose ideas qualify as hate–literature.
That is why we need to act. Tolerance is good, but tolerance under the label that society has given it
will become harmful to the public, and to the church. Racism is horrible, yes. Religious
discrimination is illegitimate, of course. Words and names such as 'Apartheid', 'the Catholic
Crusades' and 'Bloody Mary' will not be forgotten or missed, but if our path continues down the road
it is traveling, 'tolerance' will be grouped into a section of the English language that

Zero Tolerance Policy Essay
Does Zero–tolerance policies make schools safer?
Objections 1.Zero Tolerance Polcies help reduce teen crime and violence. The U.S. Department of
Justice stated that students are "more likely to be victims of nonfatal serious violent crime away
from school than at school". The U.S Department of Justice found that in November 2004 that
violent crime in schools has continued its steady decline in recent years.(Violence, 2008). Objections
2.Zero–Tolerance Policies at U.S. Schools Are Necessary. The editors of the Spokesman Review
argue that "School shooters can come from vastly different backgrounds, school shootings can
happen in any community. What all school shooters have in common is their access to weapons"
(Violence, 2008). So the seemly strict policies help to decrease the violent crimes. In another article

I answer that, the growing concerns about school safety has been around since the 1990s. The
United States Congress and many state legislatures passed laws that allowed school districts to
implement harsh disciplinary policies. For example expulsion and out–of–school suspensions were
implemented in order to help reduce incidents of students bringing guns and other weapons to
school(mental health). The zero tolerance policy is "intended to deter misbehavior by maintaining
clearly defined and uniformly applied rules"(School Safety, 2016). But the school districts and
schools have expanded the zero tolerance policies to include various non–violent acts. The policies
often use vague words like, "threats," "violence," "weapons," and "drugs". Allowing the
administration to subjectively decide if the act of the student is deemed threatening or not is not a
way to effectively decrease the incidents of students bringing weapons to school. Jacob

Zero tolerance policies are prevalent and need to be enforced at all times, I don't believe in
looking at this as a case by case situation. when it is done that was it can be a situation were the

opinion the schools should have spoken with the students and parents to advise just what the rules

week of school. in addition from the beginning it show me that the young man was not careful with

end the truth will come out and see that for example, Johnny did not mean to this gift with him,
they will also see that he is not one that wants to hurt anyone, but I can not be the judge, lawyer

Speech On Tolerance
Mahatma Gandhi once said, "silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out
the whole truth and acting accordingly". Throughout life we are told to be respectful and keep
our mouths shut. In today's society, there's always the uncertainty of how people should deal
with problems. During certain situations, tolerance is not always the right way to find a solution
to a problem. There are often other ways to come to a compromise. To begin with, tolerance can
be portrayed as weakness and people will take advantage of others. When Elie and his father were
taken away to a concentration camp, his father made the mistake of asking where the toilets
were. The gypsy that was in charge of the group treated the father as if he had no soul and
"slapped [him] with such force that he fell down and then crawled back to his place on all fours"
(Wiesel 39). Elie's father was frightened and did not stand up for himself, he frantically tried to
escape. The leaders saw the brawl and concluded that he was a pathetic individual and concluded
that they could treat him however. Later on, his father obtained the reputation of being a weak
individual which, led to him being beat up more than most of the inmates. If he would not have
crawled away as if he was fragile and showed strength to stand up, the Nazi's would have a more
difficult time taking advantage of him. Even though he couldn't help if he was slapped, tolerating the
beating and escaping into the corner showed his weakness to

Tolerance By John Locke
Tolerance means a "Fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, beliefs,
practices, racial or ethnic origins, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry." (Dictionary)
Enemy is "a person who feels hatred for, fosters harmful designs against, or engages in antagonistic
activities against another; an adversary or opponent." (Dictionary) The quote "In the practice of
tolerance, one's enemy is the best teacher." (Dalai Lama, Tibetan Leader, 1935) Dalai is saying that
to practice tolerance, one needs something or someone to fight against to test oneself. An antagonist
or enemy is needed in order to test oneself to the fullest extent. Meaning that an enemy is the best
person to teach how to tolerate others. John Locke agrees with what Dalai thinks is the best way to
tolerate others in order to stay happy because the majority respects the rights of others; even if
they are their enemy; on the basis of wanting their own rights to be respected. John Locke was
born in 1632 in Wrighton, Somerset. His father was a lawyer and small landowner who had fought
on the side of Parliamentarian during the English Civil War of the 1640s. At Oxford John Locke
studied medicine, which would play a big part in his life. He became a influential philosopher, he
wrote topics such as political philosophy, epistemology, and education. Locke's writings helped
found modern Western philosophy. Locke said that "human beings are born as blank slates or as a

Contemporary Issue Paper
Zero tolerance has become the latest contemporary educational issue for the Christian school leader.
Zero tolerance policies mandate predetermined consequences for specific offenses. According to a
government study, more than three quarters of all U.S. schools reported having zero tolerance
policies (Holloway, 2002). Systematic guidelines of enforcing zero tolerance require educational
leaders to impose a predetermined punishment, regardless of individual culpability or extenuating
circumstances (Gorman & Pauken, 2003). Ethical decision making and the opportunity to apply
Biblical principles have taken a back seat to reactive discipline by school leaders. Societal
expectations have forced proactive educational...show more content...
School violence has become of the most pressing educational problems in the United States. Gang
violence and high profile shootings across the nation cause concern within schools. Communities
struggle to understand why these events take place and how they can be prevented. The
overwhelming response to solve the issue of violence in schools is the increasing societal pressure
to execute zero tolerance. Zero tolerance is driven by the educational philosophy, policies, and
practices of school communities. Stakeholders expect schools to be a safe place for staff and for
students. Stakeholders assume that a positive classroom environment, safe students, and school
enjoyment are conditions necessary to create a positive climate where learning takes place. This
assumption can be backed with research. A calm classroom environment, teachers' management of
disruptive behavior, and students' view of school safety are factors that have been found to directly
correlate with student achievement in the classroom (Ma & Willms, 2004). Safety and a feeling of
not being threatened during school hours have been found to be important to students' achievement.
Failure to remove a disruptive or an unruly student from school has been found to have a negative
impact on achievement and creates a great risk to school staff and students (Garbarino et al., 1992).
Teachers cannot teach and students cannot learn in an

Essay about Tolerance, Liberalism, and Community
Tolerance, Liberalism, and Community
ABSTRACT: The liberal principle of tolerance limits the use of coercion by a commitment to the
broadest possible toleration of rival religious and moral conceptions of the worthy way of life. While
accepting the communitarian insight that moral thought is necessarily rooted in a social self with
conceptions of the good, I argue that this does not undermine liberal tolerance. There is no thickly
detailed way of life so embedded in our self–conceptions that liberal neutrality is blocked at the level
of reflection. This holds true for us in virtue of the socially acquired reflective self found in the
pluralist modern world. I reject Michael J. Sandel's argument that to resolve issues of privacy rights

In exercising this role, sometimes fine distinctions will need to be made, and there is room for
worry that in the guise of peace–keeping the state will really work to promote a favored vision of
the worthy way of life. Still, this liberal principle tells us what to worry about in such controversies,
though its abstractness means that by itself it cannot deal with difficult issues. However, the
principle of tolerance does not even abstractly address questions about property rights and the
distribution of wealth, so here the liberal tradition includes opposing approaches.
The principle of tolerance is, if not the only thing liberals share, at least a touchstone of liberalism.
Tolerance can be defended pragmatically, as a mode of living together justified simply by its
success.(1) Or it can be given a basis in critical morality, in differing ways depending upon the
particular critical stance of the defender. Both autonomy–based approaches and welfare–based
approaches are found. I think that the approach of H.L.A. Hart is most helpful, for it proceeds
critically but without appealing to some one grand foundational theory. Hart defends tolerance by
placing the burden of moral argument on those who favor coercion–since coercion, as both an
infringement of autonomy and a source of misery, is morally wrong unless there is a special
justification. He then argues that in cases

Building effective partnerships between Gurung's staff and all ATSI people can be achieved by
when there is mutual respect; tolerance of diversity should be observed. Educators should engage in
cultural competence which is a term used to describe a set of congruent behaviours that allows
individuals or services to work effectively in cross–cultural settings (DEEWR 2009). This can be
implemented by: Form positive relationships from the very beginning Share stories or information
about your own culture Listen with sincerity, communicate easily and avoid using jargon– use

Schools need to maintain a disciplined and safe learning environment. There are many disciplinary
actions that are in use today and although some can disagree about the amount of discipline that is
best for maturing children, it is reasonable to be in agreement that a positive learning environment
begins with physical and emotional safety. School safety includes a broad range of matters,
including, fighting, bullying, drugs, alcohol, weapons, and etc. Many schools use varying methods
in an effort to maintain school safety. Some schools limit school access and require all visitors to
sign in. Physical surveillance is another common method of addressing school safety issues along
with use of staff and student identification. Among all these...show more content...
Each student would be evaluated based on their record, where and when the incident occurred, and
what the circumstances were surrounding the incident. If a student was relatively good kid with no
past disciplinary action history, the school management was much more likely to have a punishment
that actually taught him or her something. But times changed and education environment in public
schools also changed considerably in recent years. Zero tolerance policies are concerning issues
that are thought to be extremely dangerous in today's society. The three main focuses of these
policies are incidences of violence, illegal drugs, and alcohol. Zero tolerance treats children as if
they were adults and takes away the 'innocence of a child' philosophy. This strategy could be
extremely safe to the lives of the good students and everything happens by treating all offenses
dealing with the aforementioned issues as well as all students equally whether the student has had a
flawless record or not.
Once clearly defined, enforcing the zero tolerance policies can be relatively easy for the offenses
related to illegal drugs and alcohol. These are serious threats to school safety and using common
sense when applying the policies against such offenses should help. Violence on the other hand is
more difficult to define at schools because it can take many forms. Under the Gun–Free Schools Act
of 1994, in order for school

Zero Tolerance Is Unfair To Students
Zero tolerance is unfair to students. The policy teaches students that there is only one way and that
there cannot be reasons. Multiple students have had there education totally ruined due to an
accident. An example can be a Winston 6 six grader who was expelled because he brought a kitchen
knife for a science project. The zero tolerance rule shouldn't be enforced at any school it takes
advantage of students. Students can have reasons for things if a kid brings nail clippers they could
have done their nails then put it in their purse and forgot. Rachel Kiel, 15 admits she messed up last
February. Having found a marijuana cigarette, the Illinois ninth–grader jokingly showed it to some
friends. She later tested negative for any kind

Tolerance: A Lost Value
"Tolerance is the last virtue of a depraved society. When an immoral society has blatantly and
proudly violated all the commandments, it insists upon one last virtue, tolerance for its immorality.
It will not tolerate condemnation of its perversions. It creates a whole new world in which only the
intolerant critic of intolerable evil, is evil." –Hutton Gibson. What is tolerance? In today's society it
is something that everyone seems to glorify, and worship as a seemingly powerful, helpful, and
good moral. Quiet frankly, and much to the opposite of E. M. Forester's essay, tolerance is what
seems to be the world's bane, and one of its most horrific and perverted lies. Throughout history, it
can be argued that it was tolerance that messed up everything that became impure. Most
importantly, tolerance can be proven to be the poison that is killing love. One familiar scene that
nearly everyone on earth would recall to argue about tolerance, is WWII. Most sources would claim
that it was the Germans who were intolerant, that they were hateful and cruel to the Jews, and
though most of them were indeed monsters, it wasn't their intolerance that was the problem. How
many of them did nothing? How many of stood up against Hitler? How many of them surrendered
and were tolerant of Hitler's lies? Because the Germans were tolerant of evil, and immorality, and
the absolution to no absolutes, six million Jews died. That is 6,000,000 if the letters didn't do it for
you. But to make matters

third grade classroom party and traumatized a nine year old boy. In May, theschool along with the
local police and the county prosecution office agreed that incidents would now be turned over to the
police. The Superintendent of the New Jersey School District estimated that police officers may
have been called in about five times per day to handle issues in the school of just under two thousand
students (Platoff, 2016). At the end of the school year,

Flag Stands For Tolerance Essay
Earth, the only planet known to host life, contains a population that totals up to 7.4 billion people,
peering a bit closer one can conclude that our population harbors billions of people who are all
different in their own way, so finding a person who is not different can be quite challenging.
America, misleading those with the nickname melting pot, inhabits millions of people belonging to
a vast array of cultures and ethnicities; however, diversity most often equates to a shift in social
rankings than it does to equality, and America, day by day, begins to portray a school lunch tray
with divided sections rather than a melting pot. In a world where our differences ought to assist
society in learning a plethora of new ideas and mindsets, we...show more content...
Reoccurring in many situations, people, specifically students, deal with this first hand in the form
of bullying in an educational setting. In his essay, "The Color of Success", Eric Watts recalls how
his fellow black friends would tell him to "stop talking like a white boy!" just because he spoke in
"standard English" (Watts). Isolating those who are different, people experience this common and
cruel practice among all generations. The act of singling out those who are unalike secures a spot in
the characterizing of human nature because it shows the need to discriminate against someone or
people and get others to join as well. Communities often treat dissimilar people in a demeaning
manner because it justifies their hatred, especially if others join along. In conclusion the way we
treat, talk, and overall communicate with those different than us in a multitude of ways cannot be
determined as a positive or accepting way. We as a society must work together in order to
promote acceptance. Today, all we hear is talk about Donald Trump's desire to build a wall, but
what need is there for a physical wall when we already have ones encasing our minds and hearts?
We as humans beings often treat those who are different with closed minds and closed hearts, but
that can change if we all join together to remove one brick at a

the ability to recognize, accept, and understand those things outside of the comfort zone of what we

Tolerance and World Peace
Tolerance and World PeaceWhat is the meaning of tolerance or world peace? Tolerance is the ability
to the fundamental of other cultures without using individuals or own culture to compare others.
World peace is the freedom, peace, and happiness between all nations and people. The two articles,
"Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism" by Martha Nussbaum and "Don't Forget the Little Plattons" by
Michael McConnel, explains the tolerance and cultures. In my own understanding from the 2
articles, I think patriotism is opposite from the tolerance. However, the more patriotic the citizen is

Most of my point of view of different culture or belief did come from teaching in school when I
took a World Religion course in grade 10. I learn a lot more about other beliefs and cultures more
than usual. It was interesting because most culture have their own traditions that are practically
the same traditions than other cultures. I also learn the ideas from my family and realtives. I do
believe that the students should learn and understand the cultural teachings in school, so that they
have a strong influence that could possibly change their perceptions. "They key to moral
education is to fuse the sentiments (especially love) to teaching of the good. We begin to do good
because we love our preceptors (especially our parents); we want to please them and we want to
be like them. We continue to do good because that is the kind of person we have grown up to be." 9
(McConnel1996, 79) McConnell is trying to say in this quote is that tolerance start at home and than
become more involving with the community. He also said that one could be part of the local
community even though cosmopolitanism states that. But, it cannot be forgotten that the main
purpose is to look at the world as a one society, world peace. Things will have to be accepted in
some days where as it is possible that the communities maybe forgotten. To the conclusion, the 2

What Does Tolerance Mean To You
What does Tolerance Mean to you? Do we look at one another with acceptance and

Reflective Essay On Tolerance In Society
Tolerance, the ability to accept and defend others despite differences in views and ideas, is
something that can be easily forgotten yet is the foundation for peace between people. As someone
who grew up in a very open–minded family, I would have never thought I'd be someone who still
needs to learn to be more tolerant, but in 6th grade I discovered that that was exactly what I had to do.
8:45 AM, September 11th 2001: The first plane collides with the North Tower of the World Trade
Center. During the following weeks the screams of victims and grieving families permeated the
country's air, but under those screams came quieter yet damaging whispers. Whispers of intolerance,
generalizing all muslim people and blaming them for the actions of a sole extremist group.
Whispers that even today, over 16 years later, can still be heard and felt across America. Hateful
whispers that, though damaging and cruel, have led to some like myself learning the importance of
becoming more tolerant.
For most of my childhood, I lived in mostly white areas with an insignificant amount of exposure to
people different than myself. This meant that I grew up hearing the discriminatory whispers against
Muslim people from the people that I went to school with. Although I logically knew that judging
someone for something so miniscule such as race or religion is ridiculous, subconsciously a
lingering subtle fear remained. I've learned since then that this fear and lack of tolerance is not one

Essay On Zero Tolerance
Many policies are put in place to keep kids safe but what is the effect of this one you may be
familiar with? The zero tolerance law has many upsides and some very drastic downsides. This
rule is supposed to keep kids safe and not overreact to minor disobedient actions. Policies are what
shape a school's attitude toward the students. The zero tolerance policy is one that doesn't help kids,
it hurts them to a certain degree. The policy states that if a student disobeys a school rule to a certain
extent (the bar of that extent is low) then he or she will be suspended or even expelled. This policy
is supposed to be put in effect no matter the severity or seriousness of the rule they are breaking.
One downside to this policy is when a student...show more content...
Many supporters of the zero tolerance policy say that strict rules are necessary to keep the
learning environment safe for students. Advocates also report that is does not matter why a
particular rule was broken, the fact that the rule was broken at all should result in some type of
consequences no matter the severity. Supporters also say the zero tolerance policy reduces
favoritism because there is not room for emotionally influenced decisions. Just because a student
is smart or has parents who are involved with the school there should not be any room for
leniency when the rules are broken. This policy can benefit the students because if there is a
disruptive student in a class he or she can be removed so that the learning environment for the
other students is not interrupted. Advocates also argue that the zero tolerance policy is teaching
students what the real world is like. For example, if an adult were to get pulled over for speeding
the police officer would not care if he or she were speeding because they were late to work he or
she would get a ticket anyways. Overall the zero tolerance policy has multiple pros including but not
limited to preparing students for the real world and helping prevent favoritism for

Tolerance, as defined in the dictionary, is a fair and permissive attitude toward those who race,
religion, nationality, etcetera, differs from one's own. In today's society we misuse the word
tolerance. In such examples as, I am very tolerable of so–and–so. So to emphasize the true meaning
of tolerance, society should look at the events that took place in history. There has been no tolerance
in races, religions, and other characteristics of human nature.

Tolerance Essay

  • 1. Tolerance In The United States Tolerance is the ability to accept things that we particularly don't agree with in regards to other people's: opinions, actions, religions, and way of life. The flag representing the United States of America means and abundance of things to many different americans. For instance, the phrase "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" embodies the representations of the flag. Ashuman beings we have different perspectives which causes conflict, in order to resolve this conflict we have to have tolerance for each others differences. The ability to relate and express tolerance can sometimes have people conflicted. This is due to their own systems of beliefs and actions. But, it is necessary to show and tolerate other people's beliefs and actions it doesn't necessarily mean you are in an agreement. In ''Texas v Johnson'' the article states that him burning the flag was a ''symbolic speech'' it's symbolic because it's his beliefs and how he feels about the flag. We cannot change what Johnson feels about the flag, and we should not judge we should just...show more content... So instead of tolerating them we should ignore them and stay in our ''social group''. But in a project called ''My So–Called Enemy'', Girls that are from different countries that are in a war are put under one roof. They do this so they can get a better understanding of each other, so it's not just one sided. These girls that were taught to hate each other were taught to dislike each other learned to tolerate each other so why can't we. The answer is that we don't know how to tolerate others it's like the phrase '' my way or the highway'', It shows how stubborn we are also it shows that we can't come to an understanding nother less wanting to understand our differences. Which is exactly why we need tolerance, it's like the solution to our Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Too much Tolerance Essay Too much Tolerance Dogmatic Tolerance = Hypocritical Tolerance. It is a word synonymous with peace, good will, brotherly love, acceptance and forgiveness. It is a virtue that is essential in a world filled with racial and religious discrimination. But at the same time tolerance, or, more specifically, the modern, politically correct definition of tolerance, holds some very dangerous pitfalls which, if our government, and we, as a people are not careful of, could be crippling to the individualism, and the religious diversity of Canada, and the world. The dictionary definition of tolerance is: "The capacity for, or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others", but the definition has become much,...show more content... But incompatibility will be wiped away, and anything that is sure, or real will be snuffed out as narrow–mindedness. You see, complete tolerance is impossible. By being so dogmatically tolerant as to state that there is no complete truth, is to, because of the nature of that statement, exclude, or be intolerant towards those whose beliefs state otherwise. Complete tolerance is an oxymoron, and is incompatible with many religious beliefs including Christianities, whose bible clearly states that it is the 'only true religion'. In that case, total tolerance is not only impossible, it also limits the ability of many to worship fully in their religion. The government is passing through various bills and amendments that are pushed through in the name of tolerance, but, in fact, according to the true definition – if it is still permissible to say such a thing – these bills are decreasing the amount of tolerance that our government has towards groups whose ideas qualify as hate–literature. That is why we need to act. Tolerance is good, but tolerance under the label that society has given it will become harmful to the public, and to the church. Racism is horrible, yes. Religious discrimination is illegitimate, of course. Words and names such as 'Apartheid', 'the Catholic Crusades' and 'Bloody Mary' will not be forgotten or missed, but if our path continues down the road it is traveling, 'tolerance' will be grouped into a section of the English language that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Zero Tolerance Policy Essay Does Zero–tolerance policies make schools safer? Objections 1.Zero Tolerance Polcies help reduce teen crime and violence. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that students are "more likely to be victims of nonfatal serious violent crime away from school than at school". The U.S Department of Justice found that in November 2004 that violent crime in schools has continued its steady decline in recent years.(Violence, 2008). Objections 2.Zero–Tolerance Policies at U.S. Schools Are Necessary. The editors of the Spokesman Review argue that "School shooters can come from vastly different backgrounds, school shootings can happen in any community. What all school shooters have in common is their access to weapons" (Violence, 2008). So the seemly strict policies help to decrease the violent crimes. In another article from Opposing Viewpoints in...show more content... I answer that, the growing concerns about school safety has been around since the 1990s. The United States Congress and many state legislatures passed laws that allowed school districts to implement harsh disciplinary policies. For example expulsion and out–of–school suspensions were implemented in order to help reduce incidents of students bringing guns and other weapons to school(mental health). The zero tolerance policy is "intended to deter misbehavior by maintaining clearly defined and uniformly applied rules"(School Safety, 2016). But the school districts and schools have expanded the zero tolerance policies to include various non–violent acts. The policies often use vague words like, "threats," "violence," "weapons," and "drugs". Allowing the administration to subjectively decide if the act of the student is deemed threatening or not is not a way to effectively decrease the incidents of students bringing weapons to school. • 4. Zero Tolerance Research Paper Zero tolerance policies are prevalent and need to be enforced at all times, I don't believe in looking at this as a case by case situation. when it is done that was it can be a situation were the one in charges is making a judgement call and this is were we don' t need this type of call. in my opinion the schools should have spoken with the students and parents to advise just what the rules and plans are for such should this happen in the school, this should have occurred during the first week of school. in addition from the beginning it show me that the young man was not careful with the gift, because this not something on just sit anywhere and no think about again. Not in agreement with Justice Souter and the seven other justices who ruled it was an unnecessary and invasive search of the middle school student. The invasion is necessary and a requirement as far as I am concern. Children at all times should be held accountable for their known action and unknown actions. As a teacher I have be concern about all children even children that is not in my classroom. Concern for their safety or even is they are the one starting the incident. No weapons, signs are posted around the school and in the classroom. • 5. Speech On Tolerance Mahatma Gandhi once said, "silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly". Throughout life we are told to be respectful and keep our mouths shut. In today's society, there's always the uncertainty of how people should deal with problems. During certain situations, tolerance is not always the right way to find a solution to a problem. There are often other ways to come to a compromise. To begin with, tolerance can be portrayed as weakness and people will take advantage of others. When Elie and his father were taken away to a concentration camp, his father made the mistake of asking where the toilets were. The gypsy that was in charge of the group treated the father as if he had no soul and "slapped [him] with such force that he fell down and then crawled back to his place on all fours" (Wiesel 39). Elie's father was frightened and did not stand up for himself, he frantically tried to escape. The leaders saw the brawl and concluded that he was a pathetic individual and concluded that they could treat him however. Later on, his father obtained the reputation of being a weak individual which, led to him being beat up more than most of the inmates. If he would not have crawled away as if he was fragile and showed strength to stand up, the Nazi's would have a more difficult time taking advantage of him. Even though he couldn't help if he was slapped, tolerating the beating and escaping into the corner showed his weakness to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Tolerance By John Locke Tolerance means a "Fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, beliefs, practices, racial or ethnic origins, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry." (Dictionary) Enemy is "a person who feels hatred for, fosters harmful designs against, or engages in antagonistic activities against another; an adversary or opponent." (Dictionary) The quote "In the practice of tolerance, one's enemy is the best teacher." (Dalai Lama, Tibetan Leader, 1935) Dalai is saying that to practice tolerance, one needs something or someone to fight against to test oneself. An antagonist or enemy is needed in order to test oneself to the fullest extent. Meaning that an enemy is the best person to teach how to tolerate others. John Locke agrees with what Dalai thinks is the best way to tolerate others in order to stay happy because the majority respects the rights of others; even if they are their enemy; on the basis of wanting their own rights to be respected. John Locke was born in 1632 in Wrighton, Somerset. His father was a lawyer and small landowner who had fought on the side of Parliamentarian during the English Civil War of the 1640s. At Oxford John Locke studied medicine, which would play a big part in his life. He became a influential philosopher, he wrote topics such as political philosophy, epistemology, and education. Locke's writings helped found modern Western philosophy. Locke said that "human beings are born as blank slates or as a "tabula Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay on Zero Tolerance in Schools Contemporary Issue Paper Zero tolerance has become the latest contemporary educational issue for the Christian school leader. Zero tolerance policies mandate predetermined consequences for specific offenses. According to a government study, more than three quarters of all U.S. schools reported having zero tolerance policies (Holloway, 2002). Systematic guidelines of enforcing zero tolerance require educational leaders to impose a predetermined punishment, regardless of individual culpability or extenuating circumstances (Gorman & Pauken, 2003). Ethical decision making and the opportunity to apply Biblical principles have taken a back seat to reactive discipline by school leaders. Societal expectations have forced proactive educational...show more content... School violence has become of the most pressing educational problems in the United States. Gang violence and high profile shootings across the nation cause concern within schools. Communities struggle to understand why these events take place and how they can be prevented. The overwhelming response to solve the issue of violence in schools is the increasing societal pressure to execute zero tolerance. Zero tolerance is driven by the educational philosophy, policies, and practices of school communities. Stakeholders expect schools to be a safe place for staff and for students. Stakeholders assume that a positive classroom environment, safe students, and school enjoyment are conditions necessary to create a positive climate where learning takes place. This assumption can be backed with research. A calm classroom environment, teachers' management of disruptive behavior, and students' view of school safety are factors that have been found to directly correlate with student achievement in the classroom (Ma & Willms, 2004). Safety and a feeling of not being threatened during school hours have been found to be important to students' achievement. Failure to remove a disruptive or an unruly student from school has been found to have a negative impact on achievement and creates a great risk to school staff and students (Garbarino et al., 1992). Teachers cannot teach and students cannot learn in an Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay about Tolerance, Liberalism, and Community Tolerance, Liberalism, and Community ABSTRACT: The liberal principle of tolerance limits the use of coercion by a commitment to the broadest possible toleration of rival religious and moral conceptions of the worthy way of life. While accepting the communitarian insight that moral thought is necessarily rooted in a social self with conceptions of the good, I argue that this does not undermine liberal tolerance. There is no thickly detailed way of life so embedded in our self–conceptions that liberal neutrality is blocked at the level of reflection. This holds true for us in virtue of the socially acquired reflective self found in the pluralist modern world. I reject Michael J. Sandel's argument that to resolve issues of privacy rights ...show more content... In exercising this role, sometimes fine distinctions will need to be made, and there is room for worry that in the guise of peace–keeping the state will really work to promote a favored vision of the worthy way of life. Still, this liberal principle tells us what to worry about in such controversies, though its abstractness means that by itself it cannot deal with difficult issues. However, the principle of tolerance does not even abstractly address questions about property rights and the distribution of wealth, so here the liberal tradition includes opposing approaches. The principle of tolerance is, if not the only thing liberals share, at least a touchstone of liberalism. Tolerance can be defended pragmatically, as a mode of living together justified simply by its success.(1) Or it can be given a basis in critical morality, in differing ways depending upon the particular critical stance of the defender. Both autonomy–based approaches and welfare–based approaches are found. I think that the approach of H.L.A. Hart is most helpful, for it proceeds critically but without appealing to some one grand foundational theory. Hart defends tolerance by placing the burden of moral argument on those who favor coercion–since coercion, as both an infringement of autonomy and a source of misery, is morally wrong unless there is a special justification. He then argues that in cases Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Educators should engage in cultural competence which is a term used to describe a set of congruent behaviours that allows individuals or services to work effectively in cross–cultural settings (DEEWR 2009). This can be implemented by: Form positive relationships from the very beginning Share stories or information about your own culture Listen with sincerity, communicate easily and avoid using jargon– use standard English Involve families in the curriculum and reiterate that they are welcomed at the service Work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff to help Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Zero Tolerance Essay Schools need to maintain a disciplined and safe learning environment. There are many disciplinary actions that are in use today and although some can disagree about the amount of discipline that is best for maturing children, it is reasonable to be in agreement that a positive learning environment begins with physical and emotional safety. School safety includes a broad range of matters, including, fighting, bullying, drugs, alcohol, weapons, and etc. Many schools use varying methods in an effort to maintain school safety. Some schools limit school access and require all visitors to sign in. Physical surveillance is another common method of addressing school safety issues along with use of staff and student identification. Among all these...show more content... Each student would be evaluated based on their record, where and when the incident occurred, and what the circumstances were surrounding the incident. If a student was relatively good kid with no past disciplinary action history, the school management was much more likely to have a punishment that actually taught him or her something. But times changed and education environment in public schools also changed considerably in recent years. Zero tolerance policies are concerning issues that are thought to be extremely dangerous in today's society. The three main focuses of these policies are incidences of violence, illegal drugs, and alcohol. Zero tolerance treats children as if they were adults and takes away the 'innocence of a child' philosophy. This strategy could be extremely safe to the lives of the good students and everything happens by treating all offenses dealing with the aforementioned issues as well as all students equally whether the student has had a flawless record or not. Once clearly defined, enforcing the zero tolerance policies can be relatively easy for the offenses related to illegal drugs and alcohol. These are serious threats to school safety and using common sense when applying the policies against such offenses should help. Violence on the other hand is more difficult to define at schools because it can take many forms. Under the Gun–Free Schools Act of 1994, in order for school Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Zero Tolerance Is Unfair To Students Zero tolerance is unfair to students. The policy teaches students that there is only one way and that there cannot be reasons. Multiple students have had there education totally ruined due to an accident. An example can be a Winston 6 six grader who was expelled because he brought a kitchen knife for a science project. The zero tolerance rule shouldn't be enforced at any school it takes advantage of students. Students can have reasons for things if a kid brings nail clippers they could have done their nails then put it in their purse and forgot. Rachel Kiel, 15 admits she messed up last February. Having found a marijuana cigarette, the Illinois ninth–grader jokingly showed it to some friends. She later tested negative for any kind Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Tolerance: A Lost Value "Tolerance is the last virtue of a depraved society. When an immoral society has blatantly and proudly violated all the commandments, it insists upon one last virtue, tolerance for its immorality. It will not tolerate condemnation of its perversions. It creates a whole new world in which only the intolerant critic of intolerable evil, is evil." –Hutton Gibson. What is tolerance? In today's society it is something that everyone seems to glorify, and worship as a seemingly powerful, helpful, and good moral. Quiet frankly, and much to the opposite of E. M. Forester's essay, tolerance is what seems to be the world's bane, and one of its most horrific and perverted lies. Throughout history, it can be argued that it was tolerance that messed up everything that became impure. Most importantly, tolerance can be proven to be the poison that is killing love. One familiar scene that nearly everyone on earth would recall to argue about tolerance, is WWII. Most sources would claim that it was the Germans who were intolerant, that they were hateful and cruel to the Jews, and though most of them were indeed monsters, it wasn't their intolerance that was the problem. How many of them did nothing? How many of stood up against Hitler? How many of them surrendered and were tolerant of Hitler's lies? Because the Germans were tolerant of evil, and immorality, and the absolution to no absolutes, six million Jews died. That is 6,000,000 if the letters didn't do it for you. But to make matters Get more content on HelpWriting.net

These include anything from drugs and alcohol to weapons and bullying. In this specific incident a New Jersey School District's Zero Tolerance Policy derailed a third grade classroom party and traumatized a nine year old boy. In May, theschool along with the local police and the county prosecution office agreed that incidents would now be turned over to the police. The Superintendent of the New Jersey School District estimated that police officers may have been called in about five times per day to handle issues in the school of just under two thousand students (Platoff, 2016). • 14. Flag Stands For Tolerance Essay Earth, the only planet known to host life, contains a population that totals up to 7.4 billion people, peering a bit closer one can conclude that our population harbors billions of people who are all different in their own way, so finding a person who is not different can be quite challenging. America, misleading those with the nickname melting pot, inhabits millions of people belonging to a vast array of cultures and ethnicities; however, diversity most often equates to a shift in social rankings than it does to equality, and America, day by day, begins to portray a school lunch tray with divided sections rather than a melting pot. In a world where our differences ought to assist society in learning a plethora of new ideas and mindsets, we...show more content... Reoccurring in many situations, people, specifically students, deal with this first hand in the form of bullying in an educational setting. In his essay, "The Color of Success", Eric Watts recalls how his fellow black friends would tell him to "stop talking like a white boy!" just because he spoke in "standard English" (Watts). Isolating those who are different, people experience this common and cruel practice among all generations. The act of singling out those who are unalike secures a spot in the characterizing of human nature because it shows the need to discriminate against someone or people and get others to join as well. Communities often treat dissimilar people in a demeaning manner because it justifies their hatred, especially if others join along. In conclusion the way we treat, talk, and overall communicate with those different than us in a multitude of ways cannot be determined as a positive or accepting way. We as a society must work together in order to promote acceptance. Today, all we hear is talk about Donald Trump's desire to build a wall, but what need is there for a physical wall when we already have ones encasing our minds and hearts? We as humans beings often treat those who are different with closed minds and closed hearts, but that can change if we all join together to remove one brick at a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Mr. Mandela's legacy is a reminder to me of why diversity and inclusion work is, and will continue to be, relevant–and why it goes beyond discussions of race and gender numbers, "business cases," and "creating organizational value." This work is meant to teach people, and develop within ourselves the ability to recognize, accept, and understand those things outside of the comfort zone of what we know, feel, and believe. This work is meant to cultivate productive environments where we can have seemingly "uncomfortable" conversations, disagree, and still be able to reconcile our differences. Tolerance is the ability to the fundamental of other cultures without using individuals or own culture to compare others. World peace is the freedom, peace, and happiness between all nations and people. The two articles, "Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism" by Martha Nussbaum and "Don't Forget the Little Plattons" by Michael McConnel, explains the tolerance and cultures. In my own understanding from the 2 articles, I think patriotism is opposite from the tolerance. However, the more patriotic the citizen is towards their own country, they will become less tolerant of other cultures. Nussbaum argues that all citizens should act cosmopolitanism to be sure there...show more content... Most of my point of view of different culture or belief did come from teaching in school when I took a World Religion course in grade 10. I learn a lot more about other beliefs and cultures more than usual. It was interesting because most culture have their own traditions that are practically the same traditions than other cultures. I also learn the ideas from my family and realtives. I do believe that the students should learn and understand the cultural teachings in school, so that they have a strong influence that could possibly change their perceptions. "They key to moral education is to fuse the sentiments (especially love) to teaching of the good. We begin to do good because we love our preceptors (especially our parents); we want to please them and we want to be like them. We continue to do good because that is the kind of person we have grown up to be." 9 (McConnel1996, 79) McConnell is trying to say in this quote is that tolerance start at home and than become more involving with the community. He also said that one could be part of the local community even though cosmopolitanism states that. But, it cannot be forgotten that the main purpose is to look at the world as a one society, world peace. Things will have to be accepted in some days where as it is possible that the communities maybe forgotten. • 17. What Does Tolerance Mean To You What does Tolerance Mean to you? Do we look at one another with acceptance and understanding? In an effort to answer these questions, the muslim club came up with a project that dealt with tolerance where we asked students in Susan E Wagner High School about tolerance .The muslim club meets every tuesday in room 217 where they made the idea to display a colorful flower outside of the library for everyone to see. We gave students such as seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen , to sign petals with the option of giving the petal their own unique signature. When they signed the petal they agreed that they were pledging to tolerance. We all spoke to them about what it means to be tolerant and understanding. the idea came from the "Father's Talk With Son About Paris Terror Attack" image, where the father is telling his little boy they have flowers as a way of explaining to the child what they can do against the guns and bad people, referring to the Paris Attacks....show more content... • 18. Reflective Essay On Tolerance In Society Tolerance, the ability to accept and defend others despite differences in views and ideas, is something that can be easily forgotten yet is the foundation for peace between people. As someone who grew up in a very open–minded family, I would have never thought I'd be someone who still needs to learn to be more tolerant, but in 6th grade I discovered that that was exactly what I had to do. 8:45 AM, September 11th 2001: The first plane collides with the North Tower of the World Trade Center. During the following weeks the screams of victims and grieving families permeated the country's air, but under those screams came quieter yet damaging whispers. Whispers of intolerance, generalizing all muslim people and blaming them for the actions of a sole extremist group. Whispers that even today, over 16 years later, can still be heard and felt across America. Hateful whispers that, though damaging and cruel, have led to some like myself learning the importance of becoming more tolerant. For most of my childhood, I lived in mostly white areas with an insignificant amount of exposure to people different than myself. This meant that I grew up hearing the discriminatory whispers against Muslim people from the people that I went to school with. Although I logically knew that judging someone for something so miniscule such as race or religion is ridiculous, subconsciously a lingering subtle fear remained. I've learned since then that this fear and lack of tolerance is not one created Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Essay On Zero Tolerance Many policies are put in place to keep kids safe but what is the effect of this one you may be familiar with? The zero tolerance law has many upsides and some very drastic downsides. This rule is supposed to keep kids safe and not overreact to minor disobedient actions. Policies are what shape a school's attitude toward the students. The zero tolerance policy is one that doesn't help kids, it hurts them to a certain degree. The policy states that if a student disobeys a school rule to a certain extent (the bar of that extent is low) then he or she will be suspended or even expelled. This policy is supposed to be put in effect no matter the severity or seriousness of the rule they are breaking. One downside to this policy is when a student...show more content... Many supporters of the zero tolerance policy say that strict rules are necessary to keep the learning environment safe for students. Advocates also report that is does not matter why a particular rule was broken, the fact that the rule was broken at all should result in some type of consequences no matter the severity. Supporters also say the zero tolerance policy reduces favoritism because there is not room for emotionally influenced decisions. Just because a student is smart or has parents who are involved with the school there should not be any room for leniency when the rules are broken. This policy can benefit the students because if there is a disruptive student in a class he or she can be removed so that the learning environment for the other students is not interrupted. Advocates also argue that the zero tolerance policy is teaching students what the real world is like. For example, if an adult were to get pulled over for speeding the police officer would not care if he or she were speeding because they were late to work he or she would get a ticket anyways. Overall the zero tolerance policy has multiple pros including but not limited to preparing students for the real world and helping prevent favoritism for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Tolerance Towards Others Tolerance, as defined in the dictionary, is a fair and permissive attitude toward those who race, religion, nationality, etcetera, differs from one's own. In today's society we misuse the word tolerance. In such examples as, I am very tolerable of so–and–so. So to emphasize the true meaning of tolerance, society should look at the events that took place in history. There has been no tolerance in races, religions, and other characteristics of human nature. In AD313 the Roman emperor Constantine the Great decreed toleration of Christianity. Twenty years later, Constantine the Great set the pattern of religious censorship that was to be followed for centuries by ordering the burning of all books by the Greek theologian Arius. After the...show more content... Just then the guards let some white students through. The crowd was quiet. I guess they were waiting to see what was going to happen. When I was able to steady my knees, I walked up to the guard who had let the white students in. He too didn't move. When I tried to squeeze past him, he raised his bayonet and then the other guards moved in and they raised their bayonets. They glared at me with a mean look and I was very frightened and didn't know what to do. I turned around and the crowd came toward me. They moved closer and closer. Somebody started yelling, 'Lynch her! Lynch her!' I tried to see a friendly face somewhere in the mob – someone who maybe would help. I looked into the face of an old woman and it seemed a kind face, but when I looked at her again, she spat on me. They came closer, shouting, 'No nigger bitch is going to get in our school. Get out of here!' I turned back to the guards but their faces told me I wouldn't get any help from them. Then I looked down the block and saw a bench at the bus stop. I thought, if I can only get there I will be safe.' I don't know why the bench seemed a safe place to me, but I started walking toward it. I tried to close my mind to what they were shouting, and kept saying to myself, if I can only make it to the bench I will be safe. When I finally got there, I don't think I could have gone another step. I sat down and the mob crowded up and began shouting all over again. Someone Get more content on HelpWriting.net
