risalente

La
parte
più

dell'abitato
è
quella
alta,
sviluppatasi
intorno
alla
chiesa
romanica
di
Santa
Maria
(deUa
Chiesa
Vecchia).
Durante
il
Medioevo,
Belgirate
fece
parte
del
feudo
del
Vergante,
di
cui
seguì
le
sorG
appartenendo
prima
ai
VisconG
e
da
ulGmo
ai
Borromeo
che
ne
oUennero
l'invesGtura
dal
1441,
alla
fine
del
sistema
feudale
nel
XVIII
secolo.
Qui
si
vive
e
si
respira
ancora

zona

Belgiar
diventata
la
zona

residenza

albergo

passato
proprietà
di
Adelaide
Bono,
madre
di
BenedeUo
e
Giovanni
Cairoli,

proprio
qui
perse

anche
personaggi
illustri
e
famosi
scriUori
quali:
Hemingway,
Goethe,
Fogazzaro,
Rosmini,
Manzoni,
Flaubert,
Mann,

Bernard
Shaw,
Wagner,
Toscanini,
Verga
e
Stendhal,
che
qui
scrisse
alcune
pagine
de
La
Certosa
di
Parma
e
vi
ambientò
parte
della
vicenda.

CarloUa,

the

mother

this
right
here
was
killed
as
a
result
of
injuries
sustained
during
the
clash
at
Villa
Glori.
On
the
front
the

plaque
dedicated
to
Giuseppe
Garibaldi's
overnight

Cairoli.
The
extreme
south
of
the
municipal
area
is
Villa
Conelli,
designed
by
Eugenio
LinaG
Lecco
and
daGng
from
the
nineteenth
century;
has
recently
been
converted
into
an
apartment
building,

it
was
maintained
part

the
Italian
garden.

Belgirate

has
always

a
very
important
