The document is a letter from the new teacher librarian at Barnum Elementary School introducing herself and the school library's book checkout policies. It explains that students in kindergarten through 2nd grade need parent permission to check out books, while older grades can check out 1-3 books at a time for up to two weeks. It also notes that lost or damaged books must be paid for and that students cannot check out new books until past debts are settled. The letter invites parents to visit the library and includes a permission slip for younger grades to check out books.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Welcome to an exciting year at the Barnum Elementary! My name is Emily Hungerford and I am
the new Teacher Librarian at Barnum. Your child will have the opportunity to visit the library to check out
books, learn library skills, and listen to wonderful stories. Studies have shown that students who are able
to choose what they read from a variety of books are more motivated to read outside of school. Even
students who cannot read can greatly benefit from choosing books and being read to.
Library book check-out policy:
Depending on your child’s grade, they will be able to check out anywhere from one to three books
at a time. These books may be checked out for up to two weeks (but should be turned in weekly so they
can check out NEW books every library visit).
Please (no matter what grade your child is in) remind your child to turn in their books within the two
week check out time. Also, please talk with your child about a safe place to put their books so they do not
lose them, and so that they are not damaged (bookshelves, backpacks, and dressers are great places).
By asking students to return their books on time and in good condition, we are teaching them to be
responsible library patrons and continue on their path to excellence. The DPS district policy requires
students who lose or damage school materials to pay for them. Students with lost or damaged library
books will not be allowed to check out additional books until payment is made.
If a student has a lost or overdue library book, the librarian will send a notice. If a parent is unable
to make immediate payment, please contact the teacher librarian, Ms. Hungerford, to make arrangements.
Permission to check out library books: (Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd grade ONLY)
I appreciate your cooperation with helping your child to be responsible for his/her library book(s)
each week. To assist the younger children [Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade] with remembering their books,
I am asking parents of children in these grades to sign the permission form at the bottom of the page and
return it to your child’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible. Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade
students who have not returned a signed permission slip will not be able to check out library
books. ECE students do not have a scheduled check out time during the week, and must have a parent
with them to check out materials. The library will be open once a week before school beginning after
Labor Day to allow for this. Look for a note to go home soon!
I am looking forward to working with Barnum students, parents and staff this school year. You are
warmly invited to visit the library at any time!
Sincerely,
Ms. Emily Hungerford (Teacher Librarian)
