Juxtaposition of a Female
Theory
• Psychoanalytic theory – Concepts of Spectator
  as discussed by Foucault
  – “[W]e cannot know what it means to be a human subject outside of
    the discursive practices through which subjective experience and
    representations of human subjectivity are enacted” (Sturken &
    Cartwright, 2009, p. 102)

• Film Theory
  – Judith Mayne “Paradoxes of spectatorship”
  – Williams (1993) discussion of Mayne’s (1993)
    Competing claims of cinema as a homogenous
    institution (apparatus theory) and the
    heterogeneity of different spectators.
• Aim to analyze the complexities of the subject.
  – Competing claims of “woman as image”
     • Mulvey (1975) and MacKinnon (1982)
Project
• Place juxtaposed figure within a public place.
     -Public transportation
     • Transited area used by different types of people.
     • Reactions of people
        – Analyze the spectator
        – Analyze the gaze
WEST END – DOWNTOWN DALLAS




• Area used by tourists,
  students, businesses, bus
  connections (ex. Greyhound)
