This document discusses making inferences and generalizations from reading passages. It provides examples of inferences, such as inferring a child's dislike of a fruit from his facial expression. It advises readers to look for clues in a text and ask questions to build inferences about characters and anticipate outcomes. The document also defines generalization as a statement that applies broadly to a category based on specific facts. It cautions that generalizations may be misleading if applied to an entire group, and provides an example of distinguishing a valid generalization from an overgeneralization.
2. Making inferences
Inference is the act or process of deriving
logical conclusions from premises known
or assumed to be true / a process by
which readers use hints to gather
information.
3. Example :
A child tries a new fruit and makes a
disgusted face. His mother can infer
that he does not like the taste of the
fruit.
Julia works at a pet store and owns
four cats, a lizard, a dog and a rabbit. It
can be inferred that Julia is a pet lover.
4. Try to read beyond the words.fill in details and
information based on the writer’s suggestion
Question your self as you read
If a writer describes a person try to understand
the person from how she moves, what she
says, what she looks like you can infer things
about character from the way a person behaves.
If you find that you cannot easily answer a
question about what you have read.
How to building inference skills
5. Look at for the of action.
Look at the way people described.
Ask yourself after you read : what will happen
as a result of these actions or events?
Be careful to build your conclusion on
evidence you find in what you read and not
exclusively on your own opinions,likes,and
dislikes.
6. Generalizing
A generalization is a statement drawn
from particular facts that is generally true
about a broad category of things. As such,
it may be misleading or stereotypical, and
not accurate for an entire group or
category.
7. • Generalisasi adalah pernyataan yang diambil
dari fakta-fakta tertentu yang umumnya benar
tentang kategori yang luas hal. Dengan
demikian, dapat menyesatkan atau stereotip,
dan tidak akurat untuk seluruh kelompok atau
kategori.
8. Make sure that your understand the main idea
and key details from the reading
Make sure that you can draw conclusions or
predict outcomes based upon information you
have read
Think about how you might apply the writer’s
ideas in different situationsdon’t go too far
beyond the information the writer gives when
you try to generalize
As you state a generalization ,be particulary
careful of words that do not allow exceptions.
