and Drought(DLDD) in Sudan
Introduction
Desertification, Land degradation and Drought are the
greatest environmental and socioeconomic
development challenges.
The current area of Sudan after separation is almost
desert, semi-desert and dry sub-humid. Its forests,
rangelands and arable lands which provide a huge
agricultural potential is threatened by resources over
exploited, prolonged drought spell and desertification.
3. Fundamentals objectives of the
NAP:
1-Insure participation of local communities
From bottom to tope.
2-Participation of CBOs and NGOs.
3-Identification of partners roles.

decision making among the all partners.
4.
5. Base on the article10 of
the convention general

in order to formulate the required policieses
and plans for combating desertification.
• Increase the participation of all sector
including women, farmers and pastoralist.

12. Sudan experiences in rehabilitation of desertfid
and degraded lands:
• In Sudan, Kordofan lands rehabilitation projects were
among the pioneer projects, successful techniques
were applied including:
• Water harvesting, macro and micro system on
compacted soil(Gurdod) .
• In el Basherie oasis-N.Kordofan, sand dunes
controlled by using local materials for inclosing sand,
area was divided in to squares(10-25cm) and planted
by adapted species (Tomam and Marakh).
13. • In Bara locality N.Kordofan, with collaboration of
UNDP 1994 community based range lands
rehabilitation project was conducted for carbon
sequestration and biodiversity. Shelter belts
established to protect an area of about 490 ha .the
belt design was two rows of trees with distances
2x2m and the total number of trees was195000.
• Results indicated that, carbon sequestrated was
about4640 ton, dunes stabilized and enhancement
of biodiversity.
14. Recommendation:
• The magnitude of desertification and land
degradation in Sudan as shown above indicated, that
conservation and rehabilitation of degraded lands
should urgently be considered among the priorities
of the government development plans considering
the local communities participation, techniques
development and ease of application.
