The atmosphere surrounds the Earth and is composed of various gases like nitrogen and oxygen. Air allows things to burn and is necessary for both animals and humans to breathe, as the lungs extract oxygen from inhaled air and release carbon dioxide. The atmosphere contains five layers - the troposphere where weather occurs, the stratosphere containing the ozone layer, the mesosphere where meteors burn up, the thermosphere which is the hottest layer, and the exosphere near space where satellites orbit.
