2. History
The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
was built in gratitude for God's
intercession in the critical period of
Russian history as a monument to the
courage of the Russian people against
the Napoleonic invasion of 1812.

Originally, the idea of building a
memorial church belonged to the Army
General Mikhail Kiiny and
Alexander I started to realise his idea.
It took almost 44 years to build The
Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. It`s
unbelievable!

This temple was a symbol of the old
Russia. It`s orthodox and bourgeois building.
Unfortenately, it was destroyed in the USSR,
because all people were atheists. There were two
explosions on the 5th of December in 1931.
Luckily, many people wanted the
restoration of the Cathedral of Christ the
Savior. So, its construction started in 1994.
People all around Moscow were really happy!

of Christ the Saviour is a
memorial to Russian military
glory, a monument of our great,
manly and brave Russian
defenders.
6. Outside
The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is one of the most popular
tourist attractions in Moscow. Inside it is an extremely grand place
that has 5 golden domes with the same design. If you look at the
temple from a height, the temple looks like a cross about 86 meters
wide. The height of the temple with a dome and a cross is 103 m.
7. Inside
The temple is designed for 10,000 people. It was erected in
the traditions of Russian-Byzantine style. There are stunning
paintings of important events from the history of Russia on
the walls. The painting inside the church is about 22,000 m

, and the glided paiting is around 9000 m 2 .
8. Interesting facts
• There are also some viewing platforms, where we can see truly unique places!
There is a bird`s-eye panorama of the central part of Moscow.
• Now, there are a lot of church services such as Easter like many years ago.
• There was a little creek and a ravine in the past, and this place was called
Chertolye, because people thought that it was accursed. But, thanks godness,
a good and kind Mother Superior cleaned from curse this place.
• Lastly, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was made on the foundation of the
Palace of Soviets
